I made silage last year using sweet potato vines and a bagging lawn mover. I put the shredded sweet potato vine into trash bags then used a vacuum cleaner to evacuate the air out of the bags. I made 7 bags total, each weighed around 40#. Worked like a champ! Of course it's such a small scale compared to what you're doing but appropriately scaled for our homestead. Love your videos! God Bless!
All you needed was Frank to tell them it was sweet and good . I think after they get used to it they will eat it good . We never made silage growing up on the farm so I think it's cool watching it being harvested and made . Thanks for sharing !
I love the smell of silage. We planted a corn/sorghum mix and cut it together on the first cutting and the sorghum grew back enough for a second cutting but you have to plant in early spring to do that. Hope this works out for you. Take care and have a blessed week.
That’s a great idea! I didn’t plan on silage with this..... it was the only way to keep from losing it to frost. Thanks for the awesome idea! Have a great day brother!
Its definitely an acquired taste for them. My uncle always made silage and had a big pit full. His cattle loved it. Our cattle were never fed silage, we could put some in front of them and they just looked at it. They will definitely catch on to it. Thanks for sharing, Brother
Have two jerseys..different as night n day on what they like to est..one loves fresh corn stalk..the other one not so much..plan on tryin corn silage soon
I'm excited that I may have something helpful to tell you.👍I just read that cucumbers help keep pests out of gardens The chemicals in the soil mix with the cucumbers and keep bugs away. Let me know if this is true. Excited to share this!
Just found your channel, love farming, equipment, good values and you fit them all. If you plan to do silage again you could build a mini concrete block bunker compared to the massive ones dairys use. Small little 12x12x6ft with a 4in concrete floor only cost a few hundred dollars and it'd help you keep a good product. Teach your boys some skills too!
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures When my father did the planting he said it was the best for holding feed for longer, as a nice safety net. Good luck and God bless.
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures He did, keeps the water off, keeps warmth better. Also the bunker walls lets you keep a straight wall on the silage and pack in tight every layer. I remember back then he never lined in the walls with plastic, but some people do that today.
Never heard of Silage before so nobody can say TH-cam is not an educational platform! You know you gotta keep doing Silage now because you done got those cows hooked on it!!
Silage has fermented...basically it has dine what the cows first stomach does....this 1 reason why silage so good....lot less work for cow to utilize the feed value...than dry hay or green chop....it jas more moisture so for dairy purposes it produces much more milk than a dry diet only....for the best feed in the planet...grow hemp high population just like corn....when its ready chop it for silage...it is the only plant on the planet that has everything in it to survive and thrive
Here is a do it by hand that you may be interested in. Also, food grade barrels work too and are less susceptible to rodents. th-cam.com/video/ygw2gpeENdQ/w-d-xo.html
Does that taste good Blossom ? Earwax is a thing I guess......LOL. Hoping that the silage works out great. Because of the mushroom growth could there be microbes that they can detect that the human eye cannot ? When you showed the mushrooms growing on top, I was sure that you were going to say that it wouldn't be edible for the cows. I remember hearing that some mushrooms are deadly for cattle. I automatically thought that they were. Lol I'm normally not a pessimistic person. Thanks for sharing Micah ! Happy New Year. Stay happy, healthy, hydrated and safe. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Thanks Margie! I really didn’t know what to think either! The cows are uncertain about it but I think they will eat it better once they get used to it.
Evidently ear wax is better than silage hahaha! They just needed a little emotional support for ole Frank to know it was good food :-) Have a great day!
In my youth we had a silage pit that was cement, 16 feet deep. 60 ft deep. 150 feet long. Here is a small scale bagger for todays smaller scale needs. th-cam.com/video/88SArxm8DkY/w-d-xo.html, companies are starting to recognize how many small farms there are now.
Now you don't need to dress like a servant or indeed a Butler whilst presenting the silage on a silver platter to these cows, it's all about presentation and they need spoiling occasionally methinks.😂😂😂😂
@@McGieHomesteadAdventures Ahh well they know the hand that feeds and takes care of them your just a provider nothing special in the scheme of things in their small brains.😂😂😂
Watch us make this silage with a wood chipper! Epic video making do with what we had!

That’s such a great idea!!! Sweet potato vines are the most delicious forage for animals too!!!!
Nice work man, thanks for the video brother
8:55 brussel sprouts. I tried to develop a taste for it but couldn't. I guess it's one of those vegetables I'll live without.
I eventually learned to like them, but eventually went strictly carnivore so no more vegetables or grains for me!😂😂😂
Just found your channel. I’m now subscribed. Wealth of knowledge and hilarious. Frank is also awesome lol

Oh that’s very interesting! So I’m not just crazy LOL!!!
They always take 2 to 3 days to get a taste for it. To speed it up, I sprinkle a little corn meal or cracked corn over the top for a few feedings.
Great idea!

Mine have decided that corn silage is excellent!

The chemicals in the soil mix with the cucumbers and keep bugs away. Let me know if this is true. Excited to share this!
It might work for certain bugs……. The cucumber beetle however loves to eat cucumbers unfortunately.
I do not know about silage, but I would love to have that stuff for mulching my raised beds.
I would think it would be great mulch!!
Is it not supposed to be dry?
Not really dry…… not really wet…… just damp.

I love 💘 💗 ♥ cows 🐄! I've never heard of Silas! A first class education as always friend!
Thanks so much.... I try to do what I can, much like you do👍👍
“ she would rather lick his ear than eat silage” sounds like love ❤️ to me.
😂🤣😂 or a wife with OCD! 😂🤣🤣😂
Perhaps the mushroom spores came from the wood that was chipped in the wood chipper before your used it. Just a thought.
I honestly have no idea!
He knows more about cattle than Gil Favor, Rowdy Yates and Wishbone from "Rawhide."

When I feed my goats alfalfa silage I usually pack it then just start feeding them it the next day and don't wait a long time but great video !

It always reminded me of sweet pickles.
It definitely has that tangy smell!
I thougt you had to cover it with plastic to avoid rotting etc
No but it must be packed very tightly
Good morning you can sileag pit and cover it. Work great
I should do that!
Use the rotten stuff as compost. The mushrooms says it's good fertilizer.
Great idea! Thanks!
Frank just has the touch
Absolutely! He’s the steer whisperer 😂🤣😂
Young Mr Frank, the cow whisperer.😂

Thanks so much! Yes there’s a lot of us!!!
Don't feed the rotten stuff they won't eat it and you'll just waste the good stuff u mix it with
Get some sorghum molasses. This will get slow eaters started much faster. Old dairy farmer trick
Great idea!! Thanks!
Lol Frank. She bites
He’s a hoot!!😂🤣
Show us your cattle ..😃
