    " WOW ! I often would drive in my car with my wife , and listen to the radio .. Mentioned on almost every song -- ""That is Hal Blaine playing on this one ."" Now she is into his sound as I have been for almost all my life .. Now Hal is gone .. Good Grief ! What do we all do now ? Just continue to listen to the radio on our drives each night .. Missing Hal -- but hearing him on almost each song .. What a legacy he leaves us with ... We may miss you , buddy , but never can we ever forget you .. RIP , Hal...

      I drive my 14-year-old granddaughter to school each morning, while listening to Sirius '60s on 6. I explained to her how the Wrecking Crew backed up so many great songs from that era. Now, when she hears a song by the Beach Boys, Byrds, Monkees, Mamas and Papas (and others), she nods and says, "Hal Blaine, right?"

    I get tired of reading "who was/is the best" comments about musicians. Just enjoy brilliance when you hear it, accept it as a gift to your ears and emotions, and move on. Hal was absolutely amazing, and his creative session skills are legendary.

    Jon Bermuda Schwartz, The same exact thing happened to me as kid and as a teenager. I was playing to Trini Lopez albums, to find out that I was emulating Mickey Jones, as well as Hal Blaine. These two guys were my idols as a young adult, and I thank God for the set of circumstances and coincidences that lead up in the years that I moved me to California where I met both Hal and Mickey and became close to Mickey's family and spent not as much time with Hal but Im still thankful for getting to meet both of them in my lifetime. They were BOTH so important to the music industry, and to my life as well. Rest in peace you two great musicians, and thanks for being a friend for the times that we were. Neil BURG

    I can recall back in '67 that the drum fills on Gary Puckett and the Union Gap tunes were so refreshing and rhythmic. I was going through military basic training when Lady Willpower was released, and I yearned to be home to follow along on my Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity, white marine pearl drum set. At that time I just thought it was Gary's drummer, but later found out that Hal recorded many of those Union Gap's releases. RIP Hal, you were superb!

    Blaine was such a tasteful drummer because he played what was right for the song, ALWAYS. Most of his sessions weren't him reading a chart it was him playing what he felt because the producer/label trusted him implicitly. One huge take away I got from him was using lighter sticks during recording. It gets a better tone from heads & cymbals and you can control the dynamics so much better than wailing with 5A's or 2B's. Start with a 7A or a jazz stick OR Zildjian makes these Hal Blaine signature model sticks that are so damn cool...perfect for recording.

    Being a radio DJ in the '60s, I used to read all the LP liner notes so I sounded like I knew what was going on when I opened the mic. Many of the early Phil Spector LP's had a list of the musicians who played on his sessions so I was aware early on of Hal and his talent. What a blessing it was to have been a radio cat back in those days.

    I knew about Hal Blaine in the 1970s because when I bought albums I’d read all the notes on the inner sleeves where the credits would be listed. When I watched The Wrecking Crew documentary on Netflix, I was sad to learn that while he made a very comfortable living, he lost a lot of it to his wife in a divorce settlement (he said he didn’t even know she had wanted one) and ended up working as a security guard in Phoenix to earn a living.

    In LA studio session drumming in the 60's and 70's it was either Hal Blaine or Earl Palmer. It wasn't a rivalry they both respected each other. Earl was more of a groove drummer (and groove is what drumming is all about) while Hal had more thunder (which Spector loved) but both were complete masters.

Now my question - did groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, and The Who use session musicians? I know Jimmy Page was a session musician for a short while but I have never heard that the top caliber groups used session people. Am I wrong in my assumption?

    • @thenewyorkpauls
      @thenewyorkpauls 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Beatles practically never used session musicians. They only used a session drummer once, Andy White for the single version of “Love Me Do,” however the version on their first album is Ringo playing the same part just as well. George Martin did not know Ringo when he showed up to the first session and had already hired White because Pete Best could barely play when The Beatles auditioned at EMI and Decca (Love Me Do in particular was a complete trainwreck with Pete on drums because he could only play “fours”, a basic timekeeping exercise consisting of kick pedal at tempo plus snare rolls). The only other session musicians they used were used openly, (strings and brass after Sgt Peppers) or Billy Preston on the keys for Let It Be / Clapton’s solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps... however, these latter 2 were friendly appearances at the request of Harrison, who knew them both. The only other person who played on their records was Martin himself (some piano, such as on In My Life).
      There are also many later Beatles recordings where Paul McCartney played drums, either augmenting Ringo’s part (Strawberry Fields Forever, Good Morning Good Morning) or playing it entirely by himself (Martha My Dear, The Ballad of John & Yoko).

    • @thenewyorkpauls
      @thenewyorkpauls 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thomas Sullins They just did the best they could. Impressive solos would be altered or skipped, drummers played simpler, etc... this wasn’t as big a deal since almost no bands sounded like their records then as PA systems were too primitive to achieve much more than a garage/talent show stage mix. Most impressive example to me is the fact that The Monkees toured live. Mickey Dolenz learned to play a live set on a drum kit in less than a year: he had never played before the show debuted in Fall ‘66, then they toured Summer of ‘67. Didn’t sound like Earl or Hal but he definitely did an admirable job.

    True statement. Drummers are all show offs.

    Seriously, Hal Blaine never did anything on the drums that a hundred other session players couldn't do. Why the hype? Ethnic networking, that's why.

      I think you miss the point completely. One of Hal’s unique qualities - and Be My Baby was a great example - is that he could sense what was right for a record and come up with it. That often wasn’t anything technically complex but it was often innovative. You’re right that, once he had had the idea and delivered it, others could copy it, but given the blank canvas that he started with, how many of your hundred other session drummers could have come up with anything as good - regardless of their ethnicity?

      @@johnenglish929 Sensing what was 'right' for a record was the job of the producer, not the drummer. The simple fact is Hal got all this work simply because of his 'ethnicity'. The music business is dominated by one particular group, far out of proportion to their percentage of the population. Look at Brian Epstein, Allen Klein, The Brill Building songwriters, David Geffen, Jac Holtzman, Phil Spector, Bernie Finkelstein, Paul Rosenberg etc. etc. etc. Check their careers. They all got their start and their breaks dealing with others of the same kind. Phil Spector is a perfect example. Look at Al Kooper. He was a nothing until he went to a Dylan session when it was love at first sight. And who was Dylan's guitarist at that same session? Mike Bloomfield. And look at Dylan himself. Joni Mitchell called him a phony and a plagiarizer but he got the hype he needed. Look at Springsteen. Is he really that good? I personally don't think so but the fact is, they take care of each other, look after each other. Anybody who denies this is just plain stupid.

    to me and me only,he was a hired gun.he had the pro training and the chops that go along with that training,and he inputed alot of free imagination on hundreds of those sessions.a great feat for any drummer.was he as inventive as say ringo or dino or a host of others in his time ? for me the answer is no.

    So the strippers were smart girls. They brought along the sheet music scores for their performances and the band had to figure it out. Good girls! Crossing from the Synagogue to the Catholic Church, I wish you would hear the message and believe in Jesus. Many Jews believed when they saw Lazarus rise from the dead. How about you, Hal? You are 89 and may not have much time left.

    A great drummer, but he'll have to spend a couple of hours in purgatory for The Sonny&Cher stuff.

    Lose the moronic title, "World's Greatest Drummer". Mr. Blaine would shame you for it; he considered himself an accompanist, in his words not a Buddy Rich, whom he referred to as "the master" .
