Hal was amazing. Much like the story Keltner tells at the start of the video about him calling Shelly Mann, I got my nerve up about 3 years ago and called Hal. And I'm now 61 ! But Hal was so kind, and thoughtful, and I was able to speak to him several times. He always returned my calls, and I am no one..He didn't ever need to speak to me. He was just a true gentleman. I sent him a birthday card last year, and he even sent me a thank you note in the mail, a postcard with his famous Hal Blaine Strikes Again logo on it...what a guy... the world feels a bit emptier without him.

Such a heartfelt story. It's so nice to hear things like this. So nice for you to have had these interactions with him!

Great story - on impulse I also once sent Hal a birthday present in the form of a shirt with large images of his famous rubber stamp logo printed over it in several places. I hoped he wouldn’t object to such a thing - far from it, he sent a very warm ‘thank you’ message. In his interviews he always says how nice all the many people he worked with were and I think that was in large part a reflection of himself.

Great interview. It's so nice to Charlie Watts more comfortable talking and expressing himself. Perhaps he is getting the chance to participate in more adult conversations. Years ago he was only interviewed by Rock and Pop interviewers....and they didn't really give him a chance to say anything.
Thanks for posting. Great to hear from these 3 Giants.

Beauty! I remember as a kid sitting next to my record player....... 1234 da da da, da da da, da da da, da da da, da da dut, da da dut ga dut da da da dadala!!! Two reasons why I played Trumpet and Drums as a kid, Herb Alpert and Hal Blaine.... now that I'm much older and lugging and setting up Drums is such a back breaking chore these days, I wish I had kept playing my Trumpet! One light case, in and out, no fatigue or back pain! Thanks and Blessings Gentlemen, I loved every minute of it!

There are many old drummers still playing, not many old trumpet players.

I did not know that Hal Blaine had passed. Like many people, it is only recently that I realized how large a part he played on rock and roll. I just finished watching Part 2 of this series and Poor Side of Town was highlighted. Last week, I listened to it at least 30 times and various versions. Over and over. I hadn’t even thought about that song in decades. Gave me a warm chill to hear Hal talk about it here. I’m going to listen to it again right now.

I knew a really good local drummer that told me that anyone can play drums cause it’s is as easy as pie. Keeping the beat takes skill. I think he was right.

Charlie Watts just seems too polite to break in. The host should have had more control of the dialogue. I love Hal Blaine rest his soul but he could talk forever.
