As a Cantonese speaker born and raised in HK… we do speak a lot of Chinglish loll, always mixing English into our sentences 😂😂 Thank you for shinning light on the differences in the 2 dialect and teaching people more about it!
I get so self-conscious when I speak Cantonese with native-speaking strangers that I just switch to Chinglish. They still understand, but I bet they're like this "ABC is trying too hard" xD
@@MCee97 for me it's not about "trying to be ABC" it's just how I was naturally brought up, I'm just used to speaking that way, might be bc I learnt both languages somewhat "simultaneously" starting from a young age lol 😅like you would usually say "我交咗份paper" instead of "我交咗份論文“ though both works but when yeah I don't get it when some people e.g. purposefully use the wrong Chinese quantifiers to act "western" LMAO
短片 is like short video/film, 视频 refers to videos in general. If u want to say "I'm a youtuber" u can say 我是一名(油管的)视频博主。Subscription is 订阅,the literal translation for subscriber would be 订阅者,but we generally use 粉丝 in dialogue,u can use 上传/更新(update) interchangeably when referring to uploading( a video) .
I'm from Hong Kong. And I just wanted to let you all know that the Cantonese versions are all accurate, especially when the Chinglish came up hahaha coz we do mix a lot of English into our sentences in general. Also, it's so 親切 to hear you all speak Cantonese hahahahah
I never knew I needed this. But I needed this. They're like super younger versions of Wong Fu; Phil, Wes, Ted. (Sorry, Wong Fu. You guys are young too. I didnt mean it that way.)
Lisa Yang yeah! But with their own origin story. That’s exactly what I thought when I first found cantomando. Brought me down memory lane with old wongfu. But canto mando is also so uniquely themselves too. And their motivation for making videos I think is slightly different from where and how Wes, Phil, and Ted first started. Cantomando is largely comedy and personality kinda stuff. Old wongfu tried to make sketches together. And cantomando focuses on different media platforms too like Instagram. While old wongfu was primarily just TH-cam and even their own website that exceeded bandwidth or something for their story-based creative content.
As an ABC who recently began feeling less and less self conscious about my Chinese, this video was fun to watch. Will definitely be checking out canto mando
as a fellow canto-mando person, I RELATE SO HARD to the cantonese vs mandarin translations, not to mention then having to translate to english. my brain gets confused, i'm rambling in like three languages, it's all a mess.
Literally my fav youtubers all in one episode! I'm amazed by Sheldon's Chinese! Not only accurate but also super natural. way to go Cantomando! Phil and Wes are just as cool as ever~
I feel you, WongFu! I'm an Asian-American in the Bay Area too, and when I watch Cantomando videos, I think: "Man, their Chinese is so good!" These guys are awesome, hilarious! (PS: Go Mills Vikings!)
Sheldon and Edward are really good in Mandarin! I know they have been learning Chinese systematically from their videos, but they surprises me with the vocab. Especially Sheldon with that '油管', it's really a word that started on Chinese social media, very surprised that he knows this. Just one thing I need to "correct," we don't say '丢粉' like Mike says for "losing fans," we say '掉粉' (diào fěn).
I felt the pain when you spoke about the job interview. My mom's native language is my second and I can speak it casually but can read and write really well, but two decades later my grandma still speaks in it, translates to eng and asks me if I could understand... ouch 😂
Fun fact: Cantonese (as we know it today) has a much longer history than Mandarin. Which is why, if you look at ancient Chinese texts, there a many written Cantonese terms used. This is also why during the development of modern Korean and Japanese, the loan Chinese words often use old chinese characters or retain their old meanings and usage, even though these words and characters are a part of everyday modern Cantonese. For example: 飲 instead of 喝; 食 instead of 吃
Two of my favourite Channels merged on this video:) Love to see more videos together. Canto Mando’s Chinese is pretty good to me as Chinese is my first language. Phi and Wes just don’t speak Chinese as much as those three do. lol
Hey! Yes, the normal word for subscriber is 粉絲. Here’s another way to refer to subscribing: 粉絲 is a noun, but if you want to use more of a verb form, you can use 關注/关注, which technically means “ follow”, so, for example, to say something like “I have a lot of subscribers”, you can say “有很多人關注我的頻道” or any variation on something like that. I’m technically also an ABC, but I use Mandarin a lot and watch a lot of Chinese TV so I think this right. I’m probably at least somewhat reliable 🙂
I had to laugh when Phil mentioned trying to order in Mandarin in restaurant and being answered in English. Somehow they know when you're ABC. My daughter-in-law from Chongqing always orders in Mandarin and gets special off-menu items for us, even though she speaks perfect, unaccented English. They just KNOW she's from China!
Hey I'm from HK and a native Cantonese speaker. We DO use a lot of English words when it comes to convo. We call TH-cam TH-cam. Thus Sheldon tends to use English words when he speaks Canto. It's a very normal thing.
As an ABC Canto speaker, it's so cool to hear Phil & Wes talk about their linguistic heritage! I have such a hard time finding Canto YT channels... I'm def going to check CantoMando out 😭 any other recs?
some mandarin questions asked in the video for those who are interested. video 影片 ying3 pian4 upload 上傳 shang4 chuan2 (he said 更新 geng1 xin1 which means update) youtube channel TH-cam頻道 pin2dao4 (pretty much everyone knows what TH-cam is in Taiwan and we don't call it 油管. that's more of a mainland Chinese term) subscriber 訂閱者 ding4yue4zhe3 or 觀眾 guan1zhong4 which means audience digital content 數位內容 shu4wei4nei4rung2 or 數位影像 shu4wei4ying3xiang4 I posted a video today 我今天上傳了一個新影片 wo3 gin1 tian1 shang4 chuan2 le5 yi2 ge5 xin1 ying3 pian4
aw yeah Chinese/Cantonese Canadians! but also as a 客家人 shoutout to the rest of the non-Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese people out there we always get forgotten :'(
3:06 - If I understand correctly, Sheldon said that Cantonese is a dialect of the Chinese language. I'll be a bit technical here, but Cantonese and Mandarin are both languages! :D:D:D:D Cantonese isn't a dialect (but Cantonese has dialects or regional variants) but it is its own language! :D:D:D:D Anyway, loved the video and I love CantoMando!! - From a Hokkien guy!!
AYE i've been watching them so much after discovering them a couple weeks ago! part of me wish i knew canto and mando so i could understand some videos
you guys are so cute!!!! Also, Sheldon actually knows Chinese, he knows we use "vlog" in China, and “更新(update)". There is a word for "subscriber" which is "订阅者”, but for sure "粉丝 fen si" also works, and "losing fans" should be “掉粉” for short.
Hong Konger here, we usually just say words like upload, subscribe and vlog in English. A lot of times we mix English and Cantonese, so we don't try to translate everything. If you used specific terms/words like "vlog" or "subscribe" most people will have no trouble understanding you.
YAY it's CantoMando❤️ Btw, "subscribe" in Chinese is 訂閱, so you can say 我的訂閱人數減少了 when you want to say "the number of my subscribers went down" ---by your Taiwanese fan (literally Taiwanese, not Taiwanese American lol)
As a local Hong Konger, I'd say it's more natural to code mix Cantonese and English lol We don't just use Cantonese in Hong Kong. We always use the English words for some concepts even though we have proper Chinese terms for them e.g. we say "presentation" instead of "報告“
there actually is a somewhat direct translation for "my subscribers" which can be said as "我的订阅人” so basically many people who watch whoever's channels may or may not subscribe to their channels. Those who do subscribe are called subscribers right? And when you say 粉丝, you basically mean those who follow(but not necessarily subscribe the channel), it does include those who subscribe your channel.
Thank you for having us was a lot of fun being on lunch break :D Bopomofo is bomb! And we could be very wrong about the Chinese lmao
Actually it’s almost perfect.
subscribers in chinese is 订阅者 dìng yùe zhé : )
Come back to Bay Area soon guys! :)))
I also did urban planning in college but transferred to architecture for grad school
But why are you guys so SMOL hereeee sksdjdjsjs
CantoMando sound sooooo differently when they are not trolling each other, it's like they have different voices
LOL right
no ahhahaahah heheheheeeh ahhahahahahah
no dolphin noise
yes... they sound like punk kids attending job interviews...
Zenov Yap so true hhhhh
This is the tamest that I've ever seen them lol

LMAO AGREE
tfw the Canto version is just...English. Thanks Ed, Sheldon and Mike, I’d share a pencil with you guys any day.
Canto is a lot more chinglish than mando haha
"we shared one pencil" was the best part in my opinion

Why do ‘Hong Kongers’ try so hard to be ABC or to be Western? It’s honestly really embarrassing please just give it a rest.
@@MCee97 for me it's not about "trying to be ABC" it's just how I was naturally brought up, I'm just used to speaking that way, might be bc I learnt both languages somewhat "simultaneously" starting from a young age lol 😅like you would usually say "我交咗份paper" instead of "我交咗份論文“ though both works but when yeah I don't get it when some people e.g. purposefully use the wrong Chinese quantifiers to act "western" LMAO
when phil and wes see cantomando they must get flashbacks of when they first started
Wes’s catchphrase of this video: “Canto version?”😂
Natalie N. Exactly.
Wes is always looking out for us. :)
Canto Mando peeps look small compared to Phil and Wes lol
They are like the younger version of them

Edward's pretty short in real life haha
oof
Scrawny Canadian? Hormones raised Americans?
I love seeing Edward just peacefully eating while others are talking, he's very adorable 😅✨
Edward's face when he said "Oh it's free in Canada" looks so sincere it's so funny HAHAHA
I still can't believe that it's free in Canada. I've been scammed by America my entire life bruh T.T
I was NOT expecting this, and it’s definitely what I never knew I needed

I wish schools in the US would start teaching languages in elementary! If so I could be trilingual by now!
I'm with Phil, if Chinese school was free in the US we'd all be good at it LOL
So when is the short film ft. Canto Mando coming out?
