Check out mark ricciuto from the adelaide crows. He stiff armed better that dusty. There is a clip of him hitting and eagles player with his should to the guys jaw and making the eagles player flip. If you want amazing speed and skills andrew McLeod in the same team. Both we 90s to 2000s when it was still hard football and bumps were fine.

My father's cousin used to be captain of Richmond back in day (late 60s, early 70s) ... Roger Dean. He had a massive rep for staging incidents for free kicks. He earned the nickname "Autumn Leaves" because he was always falling down. (: Also... "The Actor". But he was still considered one of the best players of that era.

Leigh Mathews (pronounced Lee) was actually charged by the Police for his assault on Neville Brunns during the match. It totally changed the game and 99% of the thuggery was removed from it, now that the Police were prepared to charge people with assault for ‘whacking’ somebody while playing.

The Tony Lockett song is a re-lyriced version of the song Guantanamera by the Sandpipers. There's been a few different versions of that song that have made their way through Aussie culture (most famously an ad for a truck called a 'Rodeo' ("Roh-Day-Oh") which used the phrase 'One tonne rodeo...')
    The more you know ;)
Keep up the vids. loving the content and I'm not even an AFL fan nowadays - just really interesting to see someone learning about something that is so woven into Aussie culture. Haven't read through all the comments on other vids, but it really is worth reiterating that a good portion of Australia comes to a complete standstill for the AFL and rugby league grand finals, which are on consecutive weekends.

The story of Robert Muir is a sad and pathetic tale. The man's life was ruined by systemic societal racism, and of course football racism. A brilliant junior player, he simply couldn't cope with the endless racism from fans and players. Basically drove him nuts. Stk issued a formal apology to Muir last year for its lack of support throughout his career.

I always felt Muir was hard done by. He just meted out what he got with racist taunts.

Back in the day the game was a lot more wild. Deliberate punches and fights happen very rarely now. The AFL has done a great job in eradicating this sort or stuff. The game is hard enough as it is. The players today are so big and fast that collisions in the game are just brutal. Keep up the great gear champ!

Hard to believe given what you’ve seen here but Greg Williams, Tony Lockett and Robert Dipierdomenico all won the the best and fairest player in the competition throughout their careers. Potentially those occurred in the only season they didn’t get suspended (which made you ineligible). Greg Williams won 2 league best and fairest (Brownlow Medal) and a Grand Final MVP (Norm Smith Medal) for Carlton in 1995. He is a bit of a victim of the brutality of the era in which he played. He currently suffers a lot of memory issues, likely linked to the concussions he suffered. It is said he has little to no memory of the 1995 Grand Final. The longest suspension of his career came for the fend/brush off of the umpire 10:42 into the video. Robert Dipierdomenico and Dermott Bremerton teamed up for Hawthorn during the 80s thru early 90s and won 5 premierships and an additional 5 preseason premierships. No.1 Leigh (pron Lee) Matthews has been acclaimed the greatest player of the first 100 years of the VFL/AFL. 4 premierships also for Hawthorn, the league’s leading goal kicker one season (Coleman Medal) and 4 more premierships as coach, 1 x Collingwood 1990 ( to end a 38 year drought) and 3 in a row with the Brisbane Lions. The achievements make it a little hard to argue with his elevate standing in the game?
Notably throughout their careers some of these players were accumulatively suspended for more than an entire season (22 weeks).

Most of the really violent players were in the amateur / Semi-pro era 60's to 1990, where players made little money, not many cameras watching you and suspensions were relatively light. Now the game is fully pro the fights are mostly push and shove and slaps as the financial consequences hurt and the suspensions can really hurt your playing future.

Btw it’s Tony Lockett not Tommy. And yes you should react to him he has the most goals scored in AFL history with 1360 while only playing 281 games which is absolutely insane (some of the greatest players ever go up to almost 400 games for their career). That means he average just under 5 goals a game for his whole career which is just incredible. If you want good highlight reels though watch Dustin Martin he’s one of the best players in the game atm. (Watch Dustin Martin best of 2017) that’s a really well put together video and 2017 was the best year of his career.

I've had a quick scan through the comments and if someone else has raised this then I apologise. At 11.00 we see Greg Williams give one to David Rhys Jones, breaking his jaw in the process. Rhys Jones refused to come off the ground and played for another 20 to 30 minutes until he had the opportunity to even the score, knowing that any subsequent suspension was meaningless since her would be missing 6 - 8 weeks while his jaw healed .......

In today games these big all in fights are rare and don’t have the punches due to the risks involved such as massive fines and suspensions back then most of them got away with a 1 week suspension if that. AFL has gone in the right direction now but it’s always good look at these old fights. FYI if these big all in fights happen in today games you will notice the umpires will continue to play the game and the players will usually stop and focus on the game instead, therefore they only last a few seconds or so.

It affected his ability to play the game and that became known, so it continued relentlessly, as though the ends justified the means, it's a shocking part of the sport and still happens today, though thankfully it's called out.

What you saw never happens in today’s football. The penalties for that sort of thing quite severe, So the players are not game to do that stuff. You might see the odd wrestling melee, but all participants will be heavily fined. I prefer the modern clean game, rather than have your best player knocked out of the game.
Tony locket holds the record for the most goals kicked in AFL history. 1360 goals. Rough as guts, but brilliant player. You saw Buddy Franklin who has less than 1000 goals, and neither buddy nor any other player will ever reach Locket’s record. Buddy is big and strong, Lockett was10 times that.
Number one, Leigh Matthews, (pronounced Lee.) is regarded as arguably one of the best AFL players of all time. However he has never won a Brownlow medal which is awarded to the best player in an AFL season. The medal is for the, “Fairest” and best player, not the other way round. It is therefore obvious why Matthews has never won it. Ditto so many other great players.
