"Oh, you didn't fill out the form? Well, let's do it right now." That would be reasonable customer service. By law, most places of public accommodation are at least partially wheelchair accessible, and although some parts of a ship might present difficulties, I would expect that the basic areas can be accessed by wheelchairs.

I don't think cruise ships follow the same rules as buildings on land about disabled access. If so, which country's law would apply? The country that owns the ship, where it docks, or laws of the sea?

    • @n3vrm1nd

Yeah let’s do that for every cruiser. I am making a point that if they do what you are saying then nothing is learned and everything is expected to be just handed out. I would suspect there have been other wheelchair cruiser that had no issues filling out the form. I wish customer service had the time to hand hold every rule ignorant person to properly educate them on their rules because it is truly needed not just on this issue but all the other rules people seem ignorant on that are clearly listed but are violated all the time. Some of which have been showcased on this very show. Be responsible for your own due diligence.

      1) ADA rules are NOT applicable outside the USA; 2) It's not the number or type of ability assistance devices as they would go down with the ship....it is about meeting the PASSENGERS NEEDS in anemergency and making sure they are able to get off the ship.

Every passenger who is in any way disabled must realize there will be special rules and forms that will be required of them. They are not like the everyday passenger who just books a cabin, buys a drink package and happily boards the ship. The ship makes what accommodations it can but there are always situations that arise. In this case by not filling out the form in advance the ship did not have a crew member that could be assigned to Mike. Unfortunate but Mike made the mistake, not the cruise line.

Oh boy.. he was responsible to fill out the form long before he cruised. Some cruise lines are saying the size of the wheelchair/scooter is a factor now. They must go into your room and remain in your room until it is used. The older wheelchairs are big and bulky. .. or he would have known his wheelchair was going to give him problems. They actually have wheelchairs/walkers /scooters on board you can rent. Also, outside companies will deliver to the cruise line. I know this because I took my disabled sister on cruises with me! It is sad that this happened to him and his family.😢

I sail Carnival frequently and I am in a wheelchair. As soon as I book a full access room I have to fill out a form and if I dont they will not allow me to have an accessible cabin . Also Carnival has a company, Scootaround, that works with them and they bring extra scooters for people whose wheelchairs cant be on the ship, Scootaround will hook you up with a scooter right there

I believe all of the cruise lines that don't already do this have announced that for the sake of simplicity, all fares will include all taxes and fees. RC and NCL have made this announcement, for example. Some cruise lines already do this - Disney is an example where the advertised price is the total price.

    • @hollypotter6989
      @hollypotter6989 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

This is a very good thing. Pricing is currently almost deceptive as you have to get into the booking process to see what the taxes and port fees are..and they are different for each cruise. You think you are booking a 7 day cruise for $500 then find out with taxes and port fees it going to be $1200. Knowing that up front or initiating a flat tax and flat fee per port would make it much easier to be realistic about cruising. Flat tax of 10% of your cabin fare. Port fee of $50.00 each port anyone with a calculator could figure it out without going thru the process til the end.

I think all businesses should be required to disclose the actual price upfront in their advertising. Hotels (added resort fee), cruises, concert tickets, cell phone and cable service, etc! Right up there with cellular carriers claiming a rate comes with "unlimited" data, but in the fine print says they'll throttle you down to a speed so slow you couldn't function anyway if you go over that limit! All of it is bait and switch!

On the homepage (on mobile)you have to scroll all the way to bottom to 'helpful information'. Theres a tab there amongst many called 'on board accessibility needs'. You click through and thats when you find out about the questionnaire. I'm sure people not used to travelling in wheelchairs may not realise there's often forms and could easily miss this on the website. P&o need to update the admin side of things (and create an app!!!).

I would think that as part of the paperwork, everyone should have to fill out and answer, "Do you use mobility equipment". That way if the answers aren't answered it will not submit until you answer all the questions. That is how most companies handle questions that they need answered. That said, if I were to book a cruise and a few days before having some kind of accident where I am now confined to a cruise but the doctors sign off on me going on the cruise, am I going to be denied boarding because when I submitted the information I submitted it with the info at the time that I didn't need a wheelchair. This is all a great reason to use a travel agent, so they can handle all of these types of details.

I work in the travel industry in the UK and I've been selling P&O for over 26 years, and this was the first I'd heard of it. It's basically so they can allocate a staff member and an evacuation chair to that person. But I think if you book an adapted cabin, that should be a given. Also with regards to pricing, in the UK all taxes have to be included in our prices (even sales taxes) it always makes me chuckle when I see that you have to add it. I guess it's whatever you are used to isn't it 😂

My sister and I both have mobility scooters and book handicapped cabins, on Royal and Celebrity most recently. Before Covid also NCL. Sometimes one or both of us or neither of us get a handicapped form to fill out in advance. So obviously this process is totally variable or random. No reason these very general forms could not be filled out at the port if the company doesn't send them in advance. It is crazy that P&O refused this man from boarding. Somewhat similarly I recently got a new form in advance from Southwest before flights where I had already booked, notating I would be bringing my own scooter and type of battery. I dutifully filled out the form, which said bring to flights. Strangely on 4 legs of the flight not only did no one ask to see it, even when I tried to hand them the new form, no one at the front gates or flight gates wanted to even look at it, but instead just asked the usual questions of how much did the scooter weigh and what type of battery....

Yes, the prices listed for cruises should include all mandatory charges such as port fees, taxes, gratuities, etc. Then, there should be a realistic estimate of typical add-ons, including wifi. The cruise industry should not charge as if they were a law firm, burying the actual cost under an avalanche of secondary fees. Anything other than a disclosure of the estimated final cost is unethical and breeds mistrust at the outset.

Hi, I’m a PO cruiser and wheelchair user to be clear, the reason this form can’t be filled in after a booking is made or at the embarkation terminal is because the disabled cruiser must have an accessible cabin when using a mobility aid. These cabins are larger to accommodate the extra space needed. There are crew members allotted to assist disabled passengers in an emergency. Some people also require a companion to cruise with them if their needs indicate this. Incidentally anyone on dialysis may not cruise as there is no backup for this medical requirement. When booking an accessible cabin this must be done by phone, not online. It is impossible to book it online. When you are speaking to one of the very helpful booking advisors they are very clear about filling out the declaration disabled cruisers are required to lodge. The number of disabled cruisers is limited to the number of cabins available. You cannot stay in a regular cabin with a mobility aid. It is really a very easy booking experience with many things explained. Love your vlogs BTW.

One of the longer reports says that Mr Ashton had booked the same way for a cruise a year earlier without any issues. If P&O desperately needs wheelchair details, you'd think they'd be more consistent about it. And if the form is something new since Mr Ashton last cruised with them, they really should have followed up with those who booked accessible cabins.
Also, the rules say you're supposed to fill the form out at time of booking. If he booked over the phone with P&O, then the agent should have asked for that information at booking time.

Regards any disability or medical requirements. It would be prudent for the cruise line to have a tick box "does any passenger have mobility or medical issues". If you tick the box then it prompts any necessary action forms automatically. The problem is when you book through an agent and the cruise line don't deal with the passengers and only the agent pre-cruise

Just cruised with princess, first time walker for wife, cabin steward alerted front desk that in case of emergency they would be sending a crew member to help. So probably alerting cruise lines of wheelchairs and such is so that in case of an emergency they will send crew members to assist.

Idk about most cruise lines, but mobility concerns are addressed during the online check-in process w/Carnival. That is at least 10-14 days prior to sailing

Others point out that non disabled people like to book accessible suites in those late check formats simply for extra space, thus blocking those actually in need of those cabins.

The only thing I can think of is that they were out of wheel chair/scooter accessible rooms, but if that were the case they could have told him that. I think at the time of booking the questionnaire should be made to be filled out before completing the booking.

He had booked an accessible room. The issue was that there must be a crew member assigned to a wheelchair bound passenger and there wasn't one available because Mike hadn't filled out the form.

I think that the on line check in could have a question that asks "Do you have to use a wheelchair or other mobility device?" If you answer no then it goes to the next question but it you answer yes it goes to the rest of the survey about the mobility devices. That would fix the problem.

I love traveling and I TRULY LOVE crusing. The thought of bed bugs is the only thing that would keep me home. I've never had an issue with them. I stated bringing a product called BED DEFENSE with me - spray for my luggage, closets, drawers, etc. and packets to put between matresses. Unfortunately, they are no long in business.

I like that the cruise lines will start show the full amount. Disney had done it for a long time. On their website they have the full amount and what the price is for two as the total. That way there is no guessing or having to have your calculator handy every time you want to book. It also makes comparing prices between cruise lines easier to do.
