My uncle was a car guy, and so are his sons. Uncle restored old cars, for himself and on the side helping others (vintage car people are an interesting community). I think he bartered a lot of his work and wound up with a 1920s roadster and a 1941 Ford two-door Deluxe sedan; both were gorgeous cars. It took him years to fix them up and when he needed money, he sold the roadster. Twenty or so years later he sold the Ford. They sold for more than what he spent on them. Vintage/classic cars can be a money pit, and the people with a passion for restoring them often need family supporting the passion. 😀

If the car modifications are being done with debt and hurting the family, than she is absolutely in the right. If there's a budget planned and the work in done within the budget parameters, than she has no say. It's all about working together within the budget.
With tha said, she does sound a bit controlling and disrespectful when she calls him "selfish."
My uncle was a car guy, and so are his sons. Uncle restored old cars, for himself and on the side helping others (vintage car people are an interesting community). I think he bartered a lot of his work and wound up with a 1920s roadster and a 1941 Ford two-door Deluxe sedan; both were gorgeous cars. It took him years to fix them up and when he needed money, he sold the roadster. Twenty or so years later he sold the Ford. They sold for more than what he spent on them. Vintage/classic cars can be a money pit, and the people with a passion for restoring them often need family supporting the passion. 😀

When a guy calls in this situation, Dave quotes the Bible at him about marriage, when it's a woman the man is just being a child. Sounds like she treats him like one, might as well be one. She allowed him a credit card and then took it away like a video game from a child who plays too much. He is in therapy, he is trying to work his issues, and wanted a therapist they both like, rather than one that just make him feel like they are blaming him, and wanted one that could remember his name. That sounds completely reasonably. Sure, his actions suck, and he needs to grow up, but it sounds like she isn't really letting him be an adult either.

they never got into their finances at all... If this guy works 60 hours a week making a good 6 figure income then he's probably justified in his occasional frivolous purchase, If he's an unemployed deadbeat and mooches off her money then he certainly isn't making responsible choices. She didn't even say how much debt he has only that he got a CC with a $300 limit which he maxed out right away. Did he pay it off already? How much other debt is he taking them into, thousands? tens of thousands? hundreds?
