Looking at the name "Confused Matthew" and the look of his avatar, for the longest time I thought Confused Matthew was some kind of Christian children's book about a kid who thinks he's gay.
I gotta give Matthew credit for being willing to share controversial opinions (execution and explanation notwithstanding) in spite of the herd mentality had on TH-cam.
Whoever was the hero that requested Confused Matthew to review Mulholland Dr. and Storytelling, thank you so much. Two of my favorite videos of all time. I fully imagine somebody seeing that 2001 video and going "oh yeah he'd fucking love David Lynch"
Confused Matthew was actually the first negative intenet critic I discoevered, mainly from watching his Spirited Away review I saw as a kid. lmao Though it's nice to know that he was a chill guy (at least compared to a lot of the social commentary movie and tv reviewers in this day and age) despite some of his unfornate personal problems and eventually admitted some of his mistakes in retrospects.
Quite a blast from the past. I remember Confused Matthew's videos back in the day & while I didn't watch many, I thought he was a tit with baffling opinions/reasons. And he was one of the earliest youtubers I saw bashing the MCU, something even despite some poor movies lately is something I find annoying. Despite that it is a shame to hear that he struggled with personal issues behind the scenes that lead him to quit the channel. I might not like his content or the persona he put out but he doesn't deserve anything like that. Also I find it hilarious his actual name is exactly the same as one of my friends.
That dude in the arcade has good insights. Also it's hilarious that even someone who completely misunderstands the art of cinema as much as Confused Matthew did could still understand the problems with the MCU.
This was truly a ride down memory lane. You did a very good job of bringing up all the little confused matthew lore lol. I was obsessed with this guy when I was in middle school and it's crazy to see how many ppl he's influenced while he himself has not grown into a bigger content creator 😭
Great video. Thanks for making it. While I still listen to Matthew’s old videos keeping them fresh in my mind, you refreshed my memory of what it was like to anticipate these videos as they were released. I never found Matthew’s opinions to be that controversial, for the most part. I thought he was usually on-ball. And I happened to agree with some of his hotter takes, particularly when it came to the lion king and back to the future part II. Despite apparently being miserable creating his later videos, I hope Dan knows that he was intelligent, well spoken, and funny. Also despite hating attention, I hope he knows that he was adored by countless people. I think my favorite Confused Matthew reviews were: Star Trek Generations Star Wars Prequels Man of Steel Dark Knight Rises (sadly part 3 is lost media)
Man, between Confused Matthew, Stand In Stan, and the Kenny Vs. Spenny Clip, this video has really hit me with the nostalgia! I WAS one of those kids in high school who argued with his friends and siblings about Matthew's reviews. I loved Stan's songs and deep dives into many different subjects (still waiting on the completed Crow 2 review!!!). I was there from the blip days to the reboot on youtube, to the eventual end of the characters as a whole. And it is also through these videos that I got to be introduced to one of my best friends to this day. I still find the Warren brothers to be some of the sharpest minds when it comes to film criticism, and even though they've retired the characters, you can STILL hear their thoughts on films both old and new on their twitch channels and Gabriel's youtube channel with his friend Andrew. Thank you for this very thorough and thoughtful analysis of some of my favorite reviewers, as well as this trip down memory lane. It is very much appreciated.
A very good history retrospective video. The only important detail you missed was how most of his videos were originally no longer available but have since been rediscovered, but there are still a few which are lost forever. I know you alluded to it but I also would have highlighted the Facebook profiles he had, as those also shed a lot of light on his real personality before he deleted them.
I really enjoyed Confused Matthew honestly. I didn't always agree with the guy but what I admired about him was that he wasn't afraid to speak his mind regardless of the status quo on a subject, not just regarding talking movies & media in general. I always respected him for that. Cool video. Wish he was still doing stuff.
Its kinda funny too because Mason from Mr. Sunday Movies doesnt care for The Lion King either. You could say ol' Matty was ahead of his time. Really appreciate these retrospectives youre doing. This fellow Vancouverite definitely appreciates this blast from the past.
Nice retrospective. I remember when I first stumbled on his original Lion King review. The Lion King is a dear childhood favorite of mine, so when it became clear he didn't like it I was about to click out of it. But the things he said made so much sense, that I ended up watching the whole thing. I really did respect him as a movie reviewer, and I still occasionally go back to his videos (we're pretty fortunate that one fan archived his older videos). Kind of sad to hear about the problems he had in his personal life.
@@wolf2912 I never agreed with him about Simba being bad, and he admitted in his second review that how you view Simba is a matter of opinion. But, if I remember right, his main criticism of The Lion King was that Simba's childhood before Mufasa's death doesn't have much of an impact on how he is after he's been with Timon and Pumbaa for a while, and I think he had a point there.
42:33 Stanley Kubrick, who had made 4 highly celebrated traditional narrative films before 2001, certainly made 2001 because he was secretly bad at narrative storytelling and wanted to obscure that
This was GREAT, thanks! At first, I didn't think Matthew's story could hold my attention for over an hour, but it really did. This was a lovely trip down memory lane, with SO MUCH trivia and research, filling in many of the blanks about what happened over the years. The backstory of the theme tune was VERY interesting! Wow. I remember the Chase Melendez controversy very well, but I was shocked to learn here of his death during production of Daniel's response videos! I always loved the Confused Matthew reviews and can't understand why anyone would find him objectionable. You don't have to agree with someone's opinions in order to enjoy hearing what they have to say. For example, I LOVE Back to the Future Part II but I still loved his scathing attack of it. It's great to hear interesting and unusual takes. He taught me the word "asinine"! Don't think I've ever heard anyone but him use that word. I still have really fond memories of Daniel and wish him all the best! Thanks again for this! Lee
I loved his reviews. Even the ones I disagreed with and the angrier ones. Even when he was going way over the top with hyperbole, I always enjoyed his sense of humour. Miss his reviews greatly ❤️
I'm amazed I somehow completely forgot about this guy, LOL. Granted I really didn't learn about him until the tail end of his YT career, but he was an interesting character to say the least! Pretty much the first person I ever knew who hated The Lion King LOL
Even with the reviews I profusely disagree with, I found Confused Matthew to be a very articulate and entertaining reviewer, one that I returned to often.
this is so nostalgic. i think i discovered him in 2009 and i do remember almost everything you mentioned, it's made me feel old. it's also made me feel sad about an older time on youtube and social media. i feel like it's different now. the theme of media has become about politics and that seems to ride on all movies as well as movie reviews too. i don't know if it's because i was younger then or the internet's changed. i remember what a big deal it felt like when confused matthew made negative reviews and it seems laughable now compared to the vitriol of political arguments over media today. it makes me miss what it felt like when confused matthew was the most infuriating person in film critique, even if i was also a fan. he used to drive me nuts and yet i'd still return to him and like him nonetheless lol
