I never knew it had an author, it's such a part of trad music I thought it was an old traditional. Thank you so much. One of my all time favorite pieces of music.

Hello Liz…I’m in the same boat as Philip. I’d always thought that, given its imagery and timeless feel, this beautiful text was of long-standing Irish lineage. Thanks for sharing your insights. As you well know, the song and its text (obviously) have become a mainstay in the repertoire…deservedly so. It’s a credit to your grandfather and your family that this text has become so well-known and well-received. You must be, quite understandably, very proud. Having a bachelor’s degree in music, I always enjoy learning more about good music and the stories behind pieces like this. Thanks again for sharing this information. Best wishes to you. (And yes, I agree…this is an excellent interpretation. Glad to know your Grandfather would have approved!)

Phillip…my apologies…I see that I misspelled your name in my note. It’s TWO “l’s. Sorry. But as you see, I was of the same impression about this song as you. It’s nice to be able to say that we both “stand corrected.” Cheers.

Hello again, all. Not to belabor the point, but as you well know, there are numerous noteworthy versions of this excellent song. One of my favorite versions is by a group called “Ganaim” (I’m pretty sure that is the correct spelling). It’s an up-tempo rendition, with an almost “punk” energy. The video begins with a fellow in his office, but he is restless and can’t concentrate…he finally gives up in any hope of getting any work done, and goes off looking for the object of his desire…”The Star of the County Down.” It’s a very good performance with an excellent video. I thought I’d share the reference with you and hope you’ll enjoy. Best wishes to all from Ohio…

How can anybody be that good a singer, that beautiful, and that amazing a fiddler. That usually takes three people. I particularly like her subtle cuts, those fast triplets that make Celtic fiddle so special. Amazing technique.

This song bring back so many memories, it takes me back to the 1950s when I was in primary school and with being a Catholic school we always had part of our school day singing mainly Irish folk songs and shanties and this was one we sang regularly, I've not heard this song in over 50 years and yet it only seems like yesterday.

The tune is English! No, really... Ralph Vaughan Williams collected serveral variants in eastern England in the 1900's. English versions are usually sung slowly to sad stories like 'The Murder of Mariah Marten'. But, you're right, of course, this is a pure, Celtic performance. And what a gorgeous singer.

It's English! Or at least the tune is. Just sayin'. I'll get me coat. (Ralph Vaughan Williams knew it as a boy in Surrey and collected various versions or 'variants' in the early 1900s. In England it seems to have been sung slowly (one version tells the story of 'The Murder of Mariah Marten in the Red Barn) but the Irish version is usually sung fast. The tune turned up in the eastern USA, of course, when collectors started exploring remote country districts over there.

The tune is not Irish at all but lyric writer Cathal McGarvey obviously knew a good tune when he heard it.
The lyrics were written circa 1916 but the music is much older (1700's) and is English and used in such traditional English folk songs as 'Dives and Lazerus'.
