NO IT ISN'T, LAURIE IS AN ACTOR, HE JUST FOLLOWED THE SCRIPT ( PAGES OF WRITTEN TEXT, WHICH YOU HAVE TO LEARN AND INTERPRET) HAD HOUSE BEEN A CHEERFUL CHARACTER, LAURIE WOULD HAVE LAUGHED A LOT.
after watching all these perfectly executed clips i always think how do they decide who plays which character because i can't think of fry doing the employee character or laurie doing the boss character or vice versa in any other sketch. It fits everytime in every sketch they've made.
I think that it doesn't matter. Fry and Laurie each put their own spin on the character so effectively that they seem made for the part, and if they had been switched you always would've said that was the only way you could imagine it. That's what a good actor is.
"I aim to please" carries the pun of aiming at a target with the gun, as Fry says "Fire to please". The same joke appears in Season 4 of Blackadder, when Blackadder was to be executed, and they sent the firing squad for a bit of a chinwag.
This is actually quite accurate, based on what I know of psychology. Someone who is able to fire people will have a low threshold for BS and thereby will say whatever the Hell needs to be said. Such is why he IMMEDIATELY returned and outright called him a bastard. Very well-portrayed.
I once fired someone for being incompetent and having lied on his CV. I explained to him that he had obtained his job by deception and that he had to leave immediately. Half an hour later I walked into the main office to find he was at his desk. He was convinced I had given him a warning.

Not sure! Blackadder was 1989, A Bit of Fry and Laurie ran from 89-95 (according to Wiki, I was a bit young at the time to watch it). Probably was a reference if it was before Blackadder
This is from Season 3 (Episode 3) of Fry and Laurie (1992) which was filmed a few years after Blackadder Goes Forth (1988). The episode has a few skits about Thatcher's resignation too which dates it to the early 90s not late 80s.
Did you know that hugh laurie is actually the writer, director and main actor for House, he actually wrote the episodes and directed everything while acting, talk about multitask
Then you have the ones who come back with several guns and lots of ammo, several months later, having let it have a good stew. (This is an American scenario, of course. It's also why they have gun laws in most countries.)
I wanted him to come in crying and begging him to take him back, then go quiet and nod as it's explained... and then Fry to say 'Yes! Just like that' and really he's not really fired.
I was going to let it go on this occasion but it would have been remiss of me as we can't allow sloppiness to creep in.It's the thin end of the wedge seagecko. The moment you do that then nobody bothers about standards. In no time nobody bothers about anything.our proud Nation is in rack and ruins and we become a 4th World Country.. The punchline should have been Boss pressing the intercom, only to hear Carol sobbing that she's just been fired. The reason? She didn't give boss the memo that Terry would be dropping by.
In the previous sequence he gave his Secretary Carol a more than generous portion of his male appendage and as Fry had her as his Mistress it created an awkward situation. Best to remove the opposition.
