- Replacing fuel pump module on 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Bosch pump module. Should be same procedure for all 1997+ XJ's.
Used my old FlipHD to record this, as it fits onto of my tripod and I don't mind getting it dirty, still works well. - ตลก
I love how gentle he is with all the connections. You can tell he knows the agony of breaking a plastic connector and it making the project take 3 days.
Thank you! I cringe when mechanics yank at and 20 year old electrical connections! That plastic, rubber, and wiring insulation gets brittle over time! My Jeep is in NY, and has a small snowplow... Even worse! 240,500 miles on the clock today!

That trick, using channel locks to rotate the fuel filler tubes far enough to get a tool on the hose-clamps, is genius. I am pretty sure I would not have had the courage to do that had I not seen you do it. It made this job much faster and may well be of use for other projects in the future. Thanks!

Thanks! This was tremendously helpful. Happy to add this job to my jeep maintenance skill set. Btw, that heat shield thingy is pliable enough to just slide off the rod no problem after taking off the bottom nut. No need to cut it.

One thing I missed that wasn't on the video was to remove the heat sheild to expose the fuel filler hoses.

Thank you much for the video. Just did my fuel pump and yup there it was floating in my gas tank ! Idk about the thread start I kept searching for mine but it was just solid all around. Tighten it and hit it with a screwdriver and it seemed solid.

A fine step by step video! The only thing I'd add is that if you're having trouble putting the lock ring back on - the plastic threads may have screeched making it nearly impossible to thread back on even and true. Chrysler dealers still sell this ring as it fits several newer models and they sell for about $20. This can save you from uttering several 4 letter words!

A tip for tightening the ring - wrap some duct tape around it (make sure you don't duct tape the pump too) and pull slowly (same motion/idea as you would for starting a lawn mower)

Excellent work. I'm faced with this job on my daughter's 2000 XJ since I noticed gas dripping from the top of the tank. I think the gasket is shot, but I'll end up doing the whole unit while it's apart. JEEP: Just Expect Every Problem.

Thanks for the video. Just finished the job.... after running into some major issues. J bolts/nuts were so rusted had to cut off and replace. Hose clamps so rusted had to remove one by the fuel neck and one on top of the tank like you did... replaced both. Hose was insanely difficult to get back attached to the tank
If you haven't already, get yourself a M12 Milwaukee ratchet. It's a life saver for tight spots. I have the 1st gen. Smaller head and enough torque for most jobs.

@@Hubjeep I got it after the PB blaster trick but now I can’t get the new fuel pump in and locked down
I would recommend getting a ratcheting wrench for unbolting the fuel tank straps because the bolt is so long you literally can't get a deepwell socket onto the nuts that hold the strap ends onto the bolt, its just a lot of tiring wrenching. Also remember to change the position of the hose clamps for both the filler and breather hoses so you can more easily loosen them in the future if necessary.
Great video! Only other thing i'd suggest is bleeding the fuel line after you prime the pump 2-3 times to get all the air out of it.

hey thanks for the video it helped a ton i just finished this on my 99 xj. I replaced the unit and now I am having a hard starts. i assume the rail is losing pressue and it is most likely something I did incorrect where would be a good place to start trouble shooting
Since you can unhook the tank strap bolts from under the chassis, I wonder if there's room to pull that right out of the heat shield once you have the nut all the way off?

On my XJ 4.0 1998 I had issues with sputtering/hesitating when accelerating uphill, hot engine….
Installed a new Mopar CPS, works fine since then - but not checked uphill acceleration yet. Will check fuel pressure…...clogged filter ? Thanks.
Nice video , been researching Bosch. Im seeing there s an adapter included you have to cut ,or you have to assemble the unit before install on an OEM Bosch ?

Question, does the gasket on the fuel pump only go in the tank to the first ridge or dies the whole gasket sit in the tank, hard time seating the new pump and gasket into tank and retainer ring gets tight but then slips off thread if tightened anymore by hand.

Question, what made you replace the module? i am having a issue with my gauge not working. it shows empty when key is off but when key is on its peg full.

Real quick ? My son has 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it’s been shutting off for the last 6 months . When he goes below half tank I’m wondering if you think it’s the fuel pump it starts back up once he turns key over .

I cut a square hole in my floor long ago just waiting for the day to pull the pump . Today is that day. 😬
That's one option. Removing the tank sounds difficult, but there aren't may steps to get it out.
-Wires and small hoses on top in front of tank.
-Filler and vent hoses on side.
-Two straps holding tank in.
If you can (getting noisy), wait til it's at 1/8 tank or so.
what about the old filter, keeping inside?

So after 4 hours 10 min of trying and getting help here is what we figured out. Put the seal on the tank first. Then tap the pump in place. Then tap a little more around the entire edge. Then put the ring on. I had a fuel pump access door above my tank cut. That saved time.

Thanks for making this video. I can see you were very careful to keep the work in view the whole time, I know this is very tedious, especially when trying to show work in tight spaces, like the filler neck. May I ask, what lubrication did you use on the gasket that went around the fuel pump during re-install?
Arthur, you're welcome. Yes, balancing the camera and light was a pain at times. I just sprayed some WD-40 on the gasket, it really doesn't need much of anything. A little white lithium on the large nut threads to help that turn on.
I just took the bottom nut off and pulled down the shield off the bolt then put in back the same way it came off no cutting.

You don't need to cut the heat shield. When you loosen up the nuts the bolts move enough to slide it off
I have the fuel tank skid plate and smitty built bumper to remove before I can get to the tank😟 I have tossed around the idea of cutting off the skid plate and doing the job that way without having to remove the bumper. I will weld on some nuts on the back side with some flat stock so It will be easier to put it on and pull it off down the road. Why could they not have installed a removable panel in the rear floor for changing the sending unit?

What symptoms were you experiencing that made you think it was the fuel pump? I have a 95 grand cherokee that is sputtering, mainly uphill and it stalls when coming to a stop if i let off the gas. Im thinking about replacing the fuel pump on it.
I have the same problem..If I have to stop I just put the jeep in neutral until the street light turns green. Did you end up figured what was wrong?

I did this procedure and now my gas line leaks at the quick connect coming out of the fuel pump spout!
I thought that maybe the o rings inside the line were maybe worn out so i bought a new line with a new quick connect piece and put it all back together and it is still leaking right there now i have to drop the tank again, any suggestions on why it is leaking there? please help. and can't I just get rid of that line all together with the quick connects and use rubber or metal tube with old fashioned hose claps that tighten down like on the filler tubes?

My 99 cherokee will randomly only try to start if im pressin the gas as its turning over. Once it does it'll stall out as soon as I take my foot off the gas. If i keep my foot on the gas for like 5 minutes after it turns over most of the time it wont stall out. Any idea what that could be? I've replaced the fuel pump itself on an older 98 cherokee i've had and that was incredibly annoying. Do you think my problem now could be related to a failing fuel pump? And if thats the case would I be better off replacing just the pump itself or the whole sending unit? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Ideally, fuel pressure gauge at the fuel rail would let you know if fuel pressure is adequate (not sure exactly what the numbers are, they are online somewhere). Since it's quite a bit of work removing the tank, I opted to replace the whole unit "module", and not just the pump.
I have a question is there enough room to cut a hole in the floor and make an access panel i have a 96 Jeep Cherokee that I have been working on and most of the interior is out already putting floor patches and frame rails in

there when converted to L P G with under-slung
tanks with the LPG tank attached below the petrol.

Mine was about 3/4 full! If I did it again I would pull the fill/vent hoses from the tank, stick a hose into the tank and siphon or pump all the gas out before removing the tank from the vehicle.
Hi quick question have a 01 jeep Cherokee sport and since the fuel filter is tied to the fuel pressure as one piece and that is tied together with the fuel pump as one whole part. When I want to change the fuel filter every 33k miles I'll have to drop the fuel tank?
if you want to replace the filter you have to replace the entire pump. no filters are sold individually. they are built into the pump.

Hubjeep my last digit ends with 49. Same pump just that the harness is a male and mine is a female like yours. I still have it in hand. Just waiting for the carter replacement on amazon. I wanted to cut old harness and put it in Bosch to see if I could make it work but I didn’t want to mess with it. The bocha you have is no longer in production I try to find it. Hopefully this carter works I don’t want to drop the tank for a while lol
Great Video, I have done this to many times. It never seam's to amaze me as to why these engineers design Shit the way they do and its obvious its to make Chrysler Money long into the next century. The Company's that make these Parts make a hell of a lot of Money. One thing I will Add to your Vid is do not skimp on the New Pump, I believe Bosh is the Best Or the Factory Pump how ever you will pay the Piper for these Pumps. If you decide to go with a cheaper brand you may have to do the replacement again the next day. I have had some off brands that did not work from the git go and some that only lasted a week or less. So I would suggest you But the Bosch or Factory Pumps ONLY. Have a Great Day.
How often does one need to replace the Fuel Pump? 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 (165K miles)
The fuel pump can last the life of the vehicle, or need replacing at 50K miles like our old 1998 ZJ did. It's usually something that you wait until it stops working or starts making louder than usual noise. Another way to look at it is, if you are sure it's the original pump and plan to keep the vehicle for years more you can replace it now and have the peace of mind that the pump is new and will likely last as long as you keep the vehicle.

Have u tried to primer before start? Turn the key to the on position with out turning the engine over then back to off a few times. Sounds like u might need a new fuel pump
