This is goofy Showa/Heisei Godzilla, which is basically the WWE with sci-fi framing devices.
Shin Godzilla/Minus One/OG/1985 are a different breed of movie.
My take is in a 6 month time frame we literally had TWO Godzilla movies and both are literally breaking records

Honestly, I can respect when a studio decides to make an over-the-top campy popcorn flick, and just commits to it 100%. It knows what it wants to be. It knows who it's trying to please, and it delivers.

I agree. I've seen enough Godzilla movies over the decades to be able to take nearly everything a studio tosses at me. Godzilla X Kong was freaking great. I liked it more than Godzilla vs. Kong, as did the rest of the family. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I loved it. Hell, I probably liked it more than Godzilla Minus One, which I also liked.
After seeing the movie, I told a friend that it was awesome. I even said, "It had a giant Gorilla that knows Kung Fu. I don't know how it learned Kung Fu, but it did, and it was awesome." Does it make sense? No. Did it register something in my brain that detected it was dumb? Yeah. But I quickly told that part of my brain to shut the Hell up because it was so much fun.

What we learned was that Godzilla in this movie is a giant lizard cat that likes to curl up inside the Colosseum
I took my 5 year old son as he’s obsessed with Godzilla. He didn’t look away from the screen and was reenacting the fights as they happened. Absolutely loved it

When we got home my son talked his mom's ear off about how cool the movie was 😂 we've got 3 other kids so me and him going to see a big dumb monster movie was a core memory he'll hold on to for the rest of his life even if he doesn't remember the movie itself
I don't necessarily disagree with many critics that downplay this movie but when I hear countless stories about children having the absolute time of their lives watching this film, I can't help but think that's the most important aspect of this movie as a whole.
You want the new fans to be young and inspired because they will be the ones to carry the franchise in the future.
That's all that matters.
5 year old children is the audience the film's aimed at. I won't be going, but I hope those that do enjoy it; I enjoy story, and plot, and good acting more than bright lights and spectacle. Which means I'm in a very tiny minority it seems!

The important thing to remember is that the majority of Godzilla movies are whimsical family films. It's these movies that entertain children when they're 3 or 4 and keep them fans into their 40s, like my brother and me. We learned to appreciate the serious dramas like the original film and Minus One as we matured, but we hold a great love in our hearts for the goofy ones. There wouldn't be a 70 year old enduring franchise if they were all serious dramas.

They are basically opposites, but both can be appreciated for what they are just like how I can enjoy McDonalds and a well-seasoned steak.

Ain't nobody have time with the humans unlike in any Transformers movie where the humans are always there for plot.
I respect that they were smart enough to know they were making a dumb movie and went all in on it. When I walked out the theatre, we all laughed about how dumb it was - the good kind of dumb that doesn't think it actually did anything special - then we talked about other things. It made me think of someone giving a guy making a made-for-tv movie for late 90's SciFi Channel a huge budget and access to future effects tech. This is what you'd get, and I like that for what it is. My favorite line was, "The shockwave took out the power, battery thing." I had to think that was a writer winking at us.
The beauty of Godzilla as a franchise is that you're allowed to have a serious and mature take on the character and a goofy action figure film. Both can and have coexisted within the franchise with neither feeling alien to one another.
I love both takes of Godzilla.

it's weird how every defensive argument made for this movie is "its supposed to be stupid, don't think about it." like if a movie is bad but it never said it was going to be good, then it's ok I guess. it's a bad argument.
Best way to put it tbh
This movie gives off the same energy as Helldivers 2. Good, campy, fun. It’s self-aware, and humble enough to not try and be anything more than it is. Everyone who shows up is just here for the fun, and that is refreshing.
It’s a 60s Godzilla movie brought back to life. I had more fun with it than I expected. No Minus One by any means, but still don’t regret seeing it.
A movie with giant monster battles, that can be enjoyed by adults AND kids, that doesn’t have “check boxes”, “politics” and not “preachy”… I call that a win. 7/10.
Yet it still has "the girl who is the key to everything", a now so predictable element appearing in a number of "girl power" oriented "modern" (progressive) productions. Modern feminism into action.
You COULD also draw some very slim conclusions about Scar King being an oppressor, enslaving the BLACK gorillas, when Kong comes to liberate his fellow apes from such a ruthless leader. A girl who's the key, wearing a cape, saving the day, pulls mothra out her ass (another female titan) to save the monster day.. The movie sure has some very slim feministic signs in it.

The 25 minute segment of Kong interacting with the other great apes was amazing. There is no dialog or spoken words, yet both Kong and Surprisingly Scar King oozes with personality.
The human story is the problem
That part alone probably boosted it above Versus for me. The previous movie had a dialogue problem. We had 2-3 groups of humans to follow, and the deaf girl had a bit to much time having her words spoken back to her. I like what they did with her and her people in this movie. Their all telepathic and they don't have to explain jack shit to the rest of the characters. It was kinda funny.

Exactly. Drinker bemoans how little the humans do in the movie when the narrative weight is actually lifted by King Kong. Kong is the "star" here, having the most problems to resolve (and aging tooth, a search for family, an evil opponent, trying to *reason* with Godzilla...)

This is what I like to call "the plurality of markets" - two films that play to different audiences and don't question eachother's right to exist. If only everyone could get what they want, rather that people wanting everything to be 'for everyone'

The writer and the director of Godzilla Minus One saw Godzilla x Kong and had a blast with it and said it was fun and gorgeous and people should see it on the biggest screen possible. If he can find a place for this film? I think every Monsterverse or Kaiju fan can do the same. There's an equal place for serious dramatic Godzilla films like Minus One and for over the top popcorn Godzilla films like The New Empire. And I love that there is so much variety when it comes to Godzilla movies now.
And the reason why the monster movie especially Godzilla roars at the box office back to back where he wins the Oscar’s for Minus One and receiving a large Box Office hit with Legendary’s New Empire with a recorded history shows how versatile he is to everyone can enjoy both or one way another and it works. I can proudly say this is the Golden Age for Godzilla.
GvK was not a bad movie per say, but it seriously was the most ridiculous movie I have seen since I watched Spy Kids 3 when I was 10.
It is the sort of 'Summer movie' we used to get in droves back when cineplexes would pack up with people and going to the cinema was a weekly thing due to the number of film options and variety there was.
After the Hollywood direction of the last decade going back to mostly 'dumb, enjoyable Summer movies' would be an improvement.
And Godzilla X Kong has a rather nice heart to it as well.

Genuinely the most fun I've had at the theater in years. No politics, no agendas, just massive monsters fighting with amazing visuals. Could've had less humans but they were so inconsequential it didn't upset me. Really hope we get another similar to this (coming from somebody who's hated the MV so far)
There was definitely some messaging though. All the leaders of everything were women/of colour. Modern movies are really predictable. Bad guys are usually white, all leaders of the good guys are usually women or POC or both. Hollywood can't escape this anymore.

They should at least pull a Godzilla Final Wars and have the human cast be dripped out like a bunch of rejected Metal Gear Solid concepts. Human characters in Monsterverse from GvK onward feel like, Disney Channel sitcom-tier and I'm kind of over it.
Too few human drama wasn't the problem, too little human scale was. Kong interacting with the other apes could've very well been a scene from some Planet of the Apes iteration. Without humans, there was no clue about how big they are.
I'll say this - I took my son (who is almost 9) and his best friend to see it this past weekend, and they went bananas for this movie and absolutely loved it; and as a dad, watching my son having so much fun made me love it too. Plus I can't help but love Dan Stevens in his goofy roles like this and Eurovision. No, it's not winning any Oscars but at least it was fun!
Trapper was my favorite character in the Movie.
I hope they bring him back in a Sequel.
@@tigermask3831 Heck yeah. Pretty much every scene of Stevens and Tyree Henry interacting with each other was comedy gold, the perfect counter for the seriousness/emotion that Hall brought.
The original Japanese Godzilla films were jarring in themselves. Some were somber anti-war or anti-pollution commentaries, some were batshit insane adventures with aliens, some go for a darker and more grounded approach, and some are kids' movies.

The suit actors stay the same the rest changes show by show different adaptations with different themes that's pretty much normal supersentai and Kamen rider do this too
When I watched Godzilla and Kong, I went in with an open mind; and overall, I enjoyed it. The plot made just enough sense to get me invested from start to finish, didn't display the message, and was just entertaining to watch. It's a reminder that good action movies still exist. Yeah, GvsK went overboard making Alexander Skaarsgard the weak, white male character so Rebecca Hall could repeatedly sign to The Girl Who's the Key to Everything what a coward he is _ALL THE DAMN TIME_ even though he was the one who figured out the pathway to the inner Earth and volunteered to go. I like to think GvsK was the reason he went off to make The Northman and enfuse it with brutal, full-on masculine energy as an FU to the makers of GvsK.
They do a really great job with giving rhw monsters personality and emotions to convey, especially with Kong. Its something that the Monsterverse does deserve a lot of credit for
Excatly, unlike Disney what they done to the Lion King (2019) it butchered what makes the stories made to be. Here in GxK we can see their expression of kong shocked seeing other Great Apes enlsaved by Skar King. You can understand how pure evil Skar King is. You can feel the pain of the Great Apes oppresion and Shimo when they were enslaved. Where Legendary Pictures make these characters in the Monsterverse more alive and connected than what Disney had ruined it in the name of "realism"

we shouldn’t get into the habit of comparing every Godzilla film from now on to Minus One. it completely takes away from any kind of variety or different themes and ideas

It's refreshing to get a movie that is exactly what it is trying to be. No committee of writers pulling every which way or messages handed down from on high to shove in, just a singular vision given life.

It was fun. My kids absolutely adored it. My oldest boy, 11yrs, asked me for the first time ever, to take him to a movie. So we had a fun time. Silly as it was.. it was FUN

@@Soulreaper-1129 I'm 28 but have so many fond memories of watching the older movies on VHS with friends when I was younger. Just getting to see these titans in cutting edge CGI is amazing even if the human plot is lacking at points.
I was cautious about this one until I saw a conversation hosted by IMAX between the directors of this film and Minus One, Adam Wingard and Takashi Yamazaki, which really helped put it in perspective that the two films really shouldn’t be compared in the way I was trying to because they’re trying to do two very different things.
One is a dark and truly captivating drama with a giant monster as the focal point. Essentially a reimagining of the original 1954 Godzilla film.
The other is a dumb, fun, turn-off-your-brain style monster mash, paying homage to the classic goofy Godzilla films of the Showa era (the 60s and 70s).
I feel like people who aren't really Godzilla fans don't understand that Godzilla is just a canvas that can become whatever the writer wants him to be. At this point, it's as if Godzilla is not a character but rather an archetype. Like you can have so many different forms of a "cowboy" movie or a "superhero" movie, it's just defining the visual tropes but not the actual tone or story of the film. In the same way, a "Godzilla" movie just means a movie featuring a giant lizard with certain abilities, the actual story and character can be anything.
I went to the theater with my 2 teen boys, they both *loved* it. It's goofy, non pretentious, doesn't have a complicated storyline - it's just big thingies smashing each other and smashing buildings galore, and that was all there was to it. And that's ok!!! I loved the feeling of just turning my brain off for a while and enjoying the looks of these obviously CGI monsters beating the crap out each other. I for one thank the producers for being honest, this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously - even my teen boys detected some plot holes, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment
It is nice to have a movie know and cater to their target audience.
Kong’s storyline is where the heart and emotion of the movie actually is. And the cool thing is it’s all show through facial expressions and body language, and not a single word is spoken because they are monkeys, they can’t speak, but you can still almost tell exactly what they are “saying.”

True. That’s the one thing about this movie that I had a problem with. The showa vibes don’t really work with the Mv when u look at how it started vs how it’s going. If they leaned more into their heisei roots I think it would’ve been a little better

As a kid I was obsessed with Godzilla. My parents didnt let me watch the films because they thought it was too brutal but some uncle or family friend gave me his old Godzilla action figure. I was bashing it around every day and against every other figure I had and Godzilla x Kong is exactly that it doesnt need puny little humans. Its my childhood in CGI, I love it!
I love that we get two different Godzillas. One that is serious and scary and one that is just giant monsters smacking each other around. I can enjoy both

It’s a Kong movie.
John Wick 4 and Godzilla Minus One were my favorite movies of 2023, and GxK: The New Empire is already one of my favorites from this year. I also enjoyed the FNaF movie and the Super Mario Bro’s movie. Sometimes you like deep, interconnected stories and sometimes you just want to watch pretty colors on the screen.

My 8 year old twin boys loved it. I spent the time laughing and shaking my head and thinking film school me would be disappointed in current me. But, the boys had a blast and that's all that counts
When so many film makers take a dump in the floor then proceeded to say "Behold my art, and hear THE MESSAGE" I get turned off by the idea if going to see a movie. So when Godzilla x Kong simply asked "I'm just gonna be big, dumb and loud for a while. Wanna join in?" It was a blast for fresh air. And seeing it with my dad made so much better.

I get a similar feeling from movies nowadays. With Hollywood actively lowering audience expectations with continuous, abhorrent wastes of at least half an hour, seeing these films that are honest, to the point, and respectful of their audiences, especially when viewing them with your family, is legitimately the visual equivalent of a sigh of relief. The average Hellywoke feature nowadays is just like modern art: Hideous, loved by critics, hated by normal people, and always vomiting some repulsive, aggravating, satanic leftist message. GxK, in my opinion, is like a stick figure: Not much thought was put into it, but even if it’s not an articulate masterpiece, there is a certain charm in its simplicity that some enjoy immensely. Overall, I’m glad you enjoyed spending your time watching this with your family!

Honestly, this just shows how great Godzilla/Kong is and how you can have both a great serious take and stupid take, just like the original Godzilla vs Kong vs the original Godzilla. I honestly just love it all.

I will say the whole "girl who’s the key to everything" isn’t what Drinker’s taking from it. It’s not another current day thing; they made her into an adaptation of Mothra’s priestesses, she had those. Only difference being it’s one girl instead of twins.
For those of us that grew up with tonal whiplash between the dark seriousness of the original Godzilla and the campy silliness of the late Showa era movies like Godzilla vs Megalon, this current era feels wonderfully familiar. Never been a better time to be a Godzilla fan.
Except the Japanese are free to make super-serious Godzilla movies, *Shin Godzilla*, *G Minus One* with the dividing line that American's will make the Pro-Wrasslin' Godzilla movies.
It works.
And the truth is there's only about 5 or so "serious" Godzilla movies out there.

I watched both Minus One and this movie and liked both for different reasons.
Minus One was a retelling of the Original Godzilla movie, and I knew that going into the movie. I was pleasantly surprised that Minus One was done even better then the Original 1950's Godzilla in story.
Godzilla x Kong was what I expected it to be, a classic Toho inspired monster flick
where humans are their for set decoration and to narrate when the monsters themselves cannot.
Both are winners in my book!
I think sometimes people forget that the original Gojira was in the same era as Godzilla Vs Megalon. One is legendary in its status, the other is infamous for a legendary feat performed. I loved both. The range of Godzillas movies has ranged from dramatic gritty and serious, to silly, camp, and just bombastic fun and ambition. And as a Godzilla fan, Ive been blessed to enjoy the entire range these movies have portrayed. It goes to show that this franchise has a bit of something for everyone. Minus One had wonderful human cast and backdrop and a wonderful portrayal of the titular monster; and New Empire portrayed the monsters as the focus in a Showa Era type of fun and spectacle. Either way, New Empire was a great escapist movie that has a proper place in the franchise.
You are absolutely correct! As a kid i absolutely lost my mind when Godzilla did that ridiculous flying kick! Him and jet jaguar where awesome! In fact i would love to have Jet Jaguar and Megalon in the next film!

And I very much agree that we’re entering the Showa-era for the Monsterverse. No overly complicated plot line, just a good monster blockbuster for everyone to enjoy! And that’s fine by me

The Japanese did better the social commentary in the modern movies and the american productions seem to be focused on the action part of classic Gojira movies.

I think we entered the Monsterverse with the gritty and more grounded Godzilla (2014) and we are now with the Showa Era style movies from KOTM to GXK... although the Monarch series is a great grounding for the Universe as well. Shoot, I say let the Monarch Series stay grounded, let us have our bombastic fun with the regular continuity of Monsterverse movies, the dramatic cinema of daikaiju eiga from Toho Japan, and that we end the Monsterverse on a bang with the feature appearance of Destoroyah. We now have our Trinity of Godzilla movie masterpieces of Gojira, Shin Godzilla, and Minus One. Long Live the King Of The Monsters, the Showa, Heisei, Millennium Series, the Reiwa Era and Monsterverse!! What a time to be alive!! 😃
I don’t quite agree that never the twain shall meet. People can enjoy a serious story and still have fun with pure escapism. I certainly do. I think it’s awesome that both interpretations of Godzilla can exist simultaneously and both be successful.
kong and godzilla had a better arc than marvel, disney and probably most hollywood movies nowadays

This movie was a love letter to the madness of the Showa Era. Colorful, Zany, Combat-heavy, and full of heart.
And that is the irony of this review.. what are the movies in japan that were hte most popular Godzilla ones? - its not hte serious ones i can tell you that.. it was the ones that sold toys.. it was the fighting ones.. just like all the sentai shows why you see monsters fighting
Kong x Godzilla is what japan WISHED they could do but don’t have the budget to even dream about that.. thats why these legendary movies do well in asia.. peopel don’t wan tot see drama.. they want to have fun with drama.. and you dno’t have to turn your brian off to enjoy this movie.. to say that is so insulting to the vfx and animators..
I hate how they praise zeros vfx but doen’t even mention the ones here that were spectacular especially the volcano scene..

The beauty is that both Minus One AND this can coexist and it's perfectly ok to like both.

Definitely. Here in Germany (and I mean, we are infamous for complaining about everything ^^) most reviewers are up in arms against this movie because it's "dumb", has no decent story etc. Like, did they expect a Shakespeare adaption from this film or what? :D

a lot of the plot points not explained in the movies are in comic books, Tv shows, and novels. it rewarded people who have been keeping up.

The humans I expected to be complete ass, and they were.
I love and respect the fact that this movie at least goes out of its way to just be good, dumb fun popcorn entertainment instead of preachy "the message" pounding. Like the Fast and Furious movies.

New empire was soooo good i loved it, whole theater cheered and clapped all ages. Godzilla lives on, and the scenes with mothra were spectacular.
I mean Drinker to be honest it was fairly magical to see Godzilla, Kong and Mothra together on the screen.

People have been making some pretty rad fan art of this flick and it’s awesome.

The great thing about Godzilla is that both approaches work. In the nearly seventy years Godzilla has been around, he has been in both dark and serious films as well as batshit crazy, over-the-top goofy spectacles. He’s also been in everything in between. The Godzilla films have varied widely in tone, allowing the franchise to provide a little something for everyone. Having seen virtually every movie in the franchise, I’ve come to embrace both types of films. As such, I loved both Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
I love serious movies, but I never in my life went into anything Godzilla related expecting some high brow intellectual well acted movie. It was always intended to just enjoy the spectacle. And I’m okay with that in this. Loved it

They stuck to the source material. I hate woke but I have to point out that the people who telepathically connect with mothra are called "fairies". The girl from skull Island is a "fairy". Hence why she was a key to the prophecy. Because women have always been the ones to connect with mothra. Watch some of the old films 😊

Godzilla Minus One is a well cooked healthy stake while New Empire is a 3 patty In N Out burger with decent fries and I’m happy with both.

I think they accomplished what the movie should of been monsters fighting without telling us there truth, sexual preferences, pronouns,who they voted for. It was a monster movie they nailed it
I own every Godzilla movie made and I love this movie. I saw Godzilla minus one in the theater and loved it as well. Both of these movies will be added to my collection day one of there release.
I think this movie is exactly what a Kaiju movie should be. Big monsters fighting. I'm glad it made good money, because I can't get enough of this.

As a Godzilla fan im just happy I got back to back Godzilla movies that didn't make me want to bleach my eyeballs like 90% of modern movies now.
I love the fact that we get both silly\campy Godzilla and serious Godzilla. I loved showa era when I was a kid and it's good to know we still have a Godzilla for the kids.
i hope that after Adam Windgard's third possible GxK film, we should return to that eerie, dark, suspensful atmosphere that Gareth Edwards gave us with the MonsterVerse's first installment, Godzilla 2014 and make it close or similar to Godzilla Minus One ❤ but make some tweaks on lesser, even NO humans, maximizing the Monsters screentime presence, brighten up some scenes and not make it too colorful that will drown out the horror and suspense👌♥️
The fact that we have two Godzilla movies that are both tonally different yet are both equally successful is such a blessing in this day and age.
