Hey man, South African architect here. Great job on the video!👌 I can see you are going to be a great architect. Just a bit of criticism (as I'm sure your have gotten used to in architecture school). The way you start your design analysis and concept development is a very "ticking the boxes" way of going about it. In your example, you state the diagram about the gym, bedroom, office, etc. Being a certain size (and trust me, I did the same thing). You will find later in your career that these sizes are very much dependant on other aspects of the design, such as relationship, circulation, light, solid and void, moments, etc. In many instances I have dealt with clients that want a 80sqm room as an example, but they don't really understand how big it is or what the implications of such a space would be on the rest of the building. Just don't let the list define your design, it becomes old quick. Get a solid concept going and develop the spaces around it. It makes for more dynamic and exciting designs. Then on the "understanding the brief". I have to agree that the brief is important, but it is very easy to get stuck into it. Many clients give you a list of rules and parameters to follow, which in all honesty, mostly leads to something dull and boring. Remember, you studied this, you are the spatial expert. As architects we think in a multi faceted way, rather than most clients who think about buildings quite linearly. Don't be afraid to come up with alternative solutions and to propose this to the client/lecturer. A good architect can follow the brief to a T, but a great architect adapts it as needed to create something special. Now with choosing the site, when one has not been given. I can't agree with you more. Designing with no context is pointless. You will end up with a brilliant looking building that just simply doesn't work. However, the way you speak about site and context seems to imply that your designs try to mimic or "fit in" with the surroundings, which isn't always a bad thing. But don't be afraid to challenge the status quo. If your concept calls for something drastically different, go for it and stand by it! As an example, I did a competition of a library design for one of Johannesburgs run down commercial/residential areas and presented it to the relevant authorities. Now the words run down and commercial already paints a picture for you. The library was a 8 storey modern and naturalist design, with many "green" aspects and fluid dynamic forms. This towered above all the two storey rectilinear warehouse type structures in the surroundings, but it made a statement for change. The building was never intended to be built, but rather to serve as an example of what the city could be. Since the competition, the city has incorporated many green spaces and multi use building typologies along the "Green Architecture" line of thinking to create a more lively and engaging community. Again, if following the example of that which came before, the city would remain a dull place to be in. Challenge the system when you need to! As long as you put the work and research into it, you are golden! Again man, great video and keep up the good work. You are going places! Hi,may I know when you said not all rooms have to follow the “concept” meaning can we also proposed a design that is influenced on the site? I mean a mixture of the key theme and other influenced is that okay? Does it mean our key theme must only be one? Thank you
What connections they may or may not need. For example, a gym room being next to a quiet library space wouldn't really work as it'll be too loud. Having a gym room next to the kitchen may be better as you can meal prep/blend your protein shakes while gyming. Showing those kind of relationships

Of course Liam. A brief is a document put together by an architect that lists the information provided by the client in terms of their desires for the project (or sometimes a template is given to a client to fill in themselves). For example, it might include the different types of programs required, the size of spaces, the client's budget, their aspirations for the project and so forth. It is the beginning document to help identify the wants, needs and constraints of a project. Hope that helps :)

Hi Ronn, good question. I think it's not something that should be done after the matter, but consistently worked on and refined over the course of a project. Like drawing sections and plans while working on models of a concept, you don't finish your final model and then start drawing plans. You work on all 3 of these at the same time and refine them over time. It is something that should be built up over time and consistently come back to. I would start with writing key words or key ideas of your project. Try structuring these key thoughts into paragraphs and finalise it with an intro and conclusion, that would be my best advice. Hey Radha, I'm not too sure what you mean by "placing a particular place". When you mention zoning, are you referring to zoning of a building/breaking up of the spaces or the building's zoning in terms of urban planning? Thanks :D
@@nesrine8574 Ohhh 2 storey's means there's 2 levels of the building. For example a building with a ground floor and floor up above would be "2 Storeys"
