    Always great to see the wild burros out in the desert. Nice video!

    I was in Big Bear in November 2022 and saw a couple of burros on shay street at night just after seeing some burro crossing sings. Pretty cool surprise

    I saw at least 50 of them in shay meadow the other day. I need to go back and look at my video but I’ve never seen them in trails just there or in my yard eating my rose bushes and fertilizing my lawn.

    I did not know about the burros here. I have explored very little in the Baldwin Lake area and beyond.
    I do call "turd" something else. I call it "scat". Like bear scat and deer scat. Just a thought. Thank you Cris, informative video and excellent directions and background.

    I grew up in Big Bear, consider myself a native thereof, and I remember as a kid burros would be in the neighborhood knocking trashcans over and braying loudly. I used to sneak them carrots all the time, even though I was told not to 😁

    In the 80s when I lived there it wasn't uncommon for us to have a weekend bbq, getting drunk and trying to ride us some wild burros. That would have been in Big Bear City

    I've spent loads of time in and around broom flats/rose mine and have not come across them. In my experience the best time to see them is if you drive up the 38 in the middle of the night. They will be in that area but a little closer to town.

      Yea I've seen them more around Baldwin Lake but have def seen them a few times around Broom Flat. Haven't at Rose Mine but the SBNF biologist said they were active there. It's all a bit of a crap shoot I guess.

      @@HikingguyIf you go north on Pigeon Pass from the 60 to Box Springs Mountain Reserve, you’re bound to encounter many wild burros.

    Awesome hike! Now that I live in California, I’ll have to get up to Big Bear! Thanks!

    I see that another commenter had asked about hunting in this area. I know it is in the D14 zone but was wondering if you or any viewers have seen deer in the area? I've see some on my way up to Big Bear late at night in lower elevations, but havent spent much time on Onyx Peak.

    This is great! There still is burro racing. Pack Burro Racing is held in Colorado these days. There's actually a group that supports this unique foot race, Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation. :)

    Is this a hunting place?

    • @MPWEST83
      @MPWEST83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No! There is no hunting in Big Bear! And the burros are protected, so no hunting burros either.

      Actually, this all falls under the D16 zone for Deer hunting in California. Obviously, you cannot hunt within city limits of Big Bear, but the entire area he is talking about is pretty open to hunting if you follow the law and do not discharge your firearm over roads or within a mile of a paved road.
