Thanks for all the Muzzleloader videos. I've been watching them all leading up to the controlled Muzzleloader/Shotgun hunt in southern Ontario in a few weeks.
I’ve been using the BH for several year with the Cheditt primers. I’ve also used other primers and had a few hang fires. What I found is BH is very sensitive to oils. I was cleaning and using REM oil to coat the inside of the barrel. ( Highly recommend REM oil ) but make sure the barrel is dry when you load your first shot.
That’s interesting not looked at the cleaner effecting the powder but that makes sense. I use Triple 7 foaming cleaner. Thanks for that, and thanks for watching. What combo do you prefer?
@@suburbanhunt3653 CVA V2 LR I use 80gr BH and Hornady bore driver 290. My traditions pursuit 74gr and federal 270 borlock. I have a new pursuit vapr. I have not shot yet. That cva setup has been 1/4 Moa out of the box.
To avoid the FTF issue while using Blackhorn 209 powder (AKA Black Gold), purchase a breech plug kit from Arrowhead Rifles that utilizes Large Rifle magnum primers. This will eliminate the possibility for a FTF when you have some government beef on your Rifle sights.
@@suburbanhunt3653 One time is all it takes to ruin a hunt that you have worked hard to prepare for and spent a lot of $$ on. Granted, all primers are hard to find. What I am saying is, that in order to eliminate a fail to fire situation when using Blackhorn 209, switch to Large Rifle magnum primers. Often times smaller local gun stores are the place to find them, as online stores get cleaned out of inventory quickly. So other than the extra dollars needed to purchase the Arrowhead breech plug conversion kit, there isn't much disadvantage to the primer availability issue. A few months ago I found LRM primers at a large big box store and also two smaller gun stores. To save the Hazmat fee, I purchased from the smaller gun store. Blackhorn itself is hard to find and when you do, it's way overpriced. I paid $69.99 per 8 ounce bottle a year and a half ago at a local gun dealer. About 3 months ago I found some at the same dealer for a friend of mine. This time they had pasted a sticker over the top of the original $69.99 sticker that increased the price to $79.99. Needed it, paid the price. Capitalism works when the supply side isn't drastically less than demand. Right now, due to numerous reasons, the supply-demand ratio is completely out of whack. Remember the companies that are gouging you now and know who to vote for when you go to the ballot box.
Was shooting my Wolf inline the other day using Tripple 7 with the standard breech plug with no problems whatsoever. No misfires, no hang fires, not problem at all. The loose Tripple 7 seems to be a little hotter than the pellets at the same volume for some reason and was maybe a little more kick with it. I've never used the Blackhorn powder, (They are just a bit too proud of it for me).
you should try the new variflame breech plug. it uses LRP and will cut down your group size. hotter spark and less force to push the load during ignition. also do not swab your barrel. the more crud the better with blackhorn. this should only be done with blackhorn and no other. go in to the woods with a dirty barrel. i only clean my barrel once a year. look up info from toby bridges he is the king of muzzloading.
Have you ever thought about testing the Traditions Smackdown Carnivore Ridgeback .50cal 250-Grain? They have an interesting designed sabots with the ribs that run horizontal.
I’m about 90% sure that’s one of the ones I just picked up. I know I got 2 different Traditions projectiles. If it’s not one I will get them and see how they work. You looking for BH209 or pellet test?
I have same exact ML. But mine is brown color. They do make a black dipped blackhorn breech plug. I just put a Leupold Ultimate Slam ML 3x9x40mm scope on mine. I been shooting hornady 250gr sst bullet. 84grs of blackhorn by weight. Shot under a 1 inch group at 100. Last yr bass pro. I picked up 6 packs of hornady 290gr bore driver bullets. Marked down to 15.00 each. Planning on sighting my ML in with them. I know guys using cheddite 209 in there ML. Only primers they could get last yr. I use Winchester 209.
The Cheddite primers work pretty good. I have only had one not work right and I not sure it was the primers fault. I need to get the 250gr SST and see how they do. The SST video I did was with 300gr. But you can’t go wrong with the FTXs they are second only to ELDX so far in all my testing.
I had the same issues with winchester 209 primers. Awful performance. Unburnt powder, even unburnt powder debris in the flash hole. Found 400 federal 209A. They perform perfectly. CVA accura 80gn BH209, thor hammer 250gn BT bullet, 2.5” group @100
I have to agree on BH209 being an awesome powder. I need to get to testing the loose Triple 7 and see how it compares in accuracy test. But the BH209 is defiantly the cleaner of the powders. Thank you for watching.
yes their we very inconsistent some being a over a grain off. So in theory you could be anywhere from 97 to 103 grains for a hundred grain charge. The biggest issue with pellet is you are getting random charges. I did a video on cleaning the bore or weight pellets to try to get better groups. th-cam.com/video/dq55hNTQP3k/w-d-xo.html In short weighting them did help as far a making 3 charges that were the same or dang close. The problem is it took almost a full box to find a combo that I would make the same charge. So it not a practical thing to do. I would switch to loose.
1lb = 7000gr BH209 comes in 8oz jugs = 1/2 lbs 1/2lbs = 3500gr 3500 / 80 = 43.75 The math would says at best 43 shots. I would say 42 would be a safe bet. The cheapest I've found it today was $32/jug + shipping and tax is $57. With 42 shots that's $1.36/ shot. Sorry about that my brain had to see that through. Hopefully that helps. 🙂 Thank you for watching.
ive heard so many good things about the blackhorn 209 but have also heard of horror stories like what happened to you but in the woods. maybe they were not using hot enough primers.not really sure. same ml as yours. the one guy hated it so much hes giving me his breech plug for loose powder
Dang. I have heard of guys having a bad jug. Maybe didn’t seal properly from the factory. But that’s rare. He got another jug and it was back to normal. That squib was a one off for me. With all my testing I’ve not had that happen again. Not really sure why that happened. But having heard multiple stories, I can understand your hesitation for using it. I don’t recommend any “Muzzleloader Only” primers for BH209. Federal 209A if you can find them. Cheddite is another good one and easier to find. Good luck and please let me know how your testing goes
I had one squib, and I believe it was my fault. I now fire at least two primers before loading the rifle to clear all the moisture out from cleaning or sitting around.

100 yards? That's plenty accurate enough for whitetail. Just means you have less room for human error. Do your part and it should do it's. 50 yards? I might keep testing. 4 in at 100 yards leaves almost no room for error. ?Thank you for watching and happy hunting.
Its worst then that the new bottles are only 8oz!!! But still over $80. I completely understand. I'm looking forward to testing the Triple 7 Loose powders. If I can get the same accuracy... the price difference may just be worth the extra cleaning. Thanks for watching and good luck in the hunting woods.
I have to ask.. have you done that? How did it turn out? It seemed me that with other powders the “crud ring” created near the plug would effect follow up shots. Also the ease of reloading a follow up shot was effected by the amount of crap in the barrel especially the 3rd shot in a group without cleaning. But this is just one shooter’s opinion. Thank you for watching
