Man your high school note books look a hell of a lot like mine. The Stroker is THE holy grail subwoofer for those of us that were in car audio in the 90’s.
My first experience was when I was a young adult in the 90s at a pawn shop an saw a guy go crazy in a subtle way when he saw a Stroker 12" and a Xtant amp that was priced crazy low. Needless to say he bought both of them. He told me they don't know what they have. Now this was back before internet verification.
holy watts man, i'm actually living your childhood right now, I'm 15 and worked for and installed my dream stereo set into my sister's car, I'm always researching things in the back of my freshman classes.
In 1995 or 1996, I had tried a Stroker 12 at the car audio store and loved it, so I bought a Stroker 15 and in my 1989 Grand Prix, I managed to hit a 143.3dB. A couple of years later, I bought a Stroker 18D4. I had this one Stroker 18D4 in my Grand Prix for a year or so, then in a 1989 Honda CRX and powered it with an Earthquake 200DHC (2000wrms). That speaker could handle it all day long. My best score was 148.3dB. I got first for Amateur 1-2subs class (I even beat cars with 3 and 4 subs). When I turned the bass down, it also sounded really good, and I got first for Amateur sound quality. For an 18" speaker, it could be powerful, and in the right box, it can still be very tight for punchy bass. I still have the sub but use it as my home theater sub. It sounds amazing. This setup looks really good! Nice history on the Stroker subs!
What an awesome set up! 15" Stroker' s with Phoenix Gold MS series power? Who wouldn't love that? I would love to hear that. Awesome gear pairing. You sir know what your doing.
Amazingly done with just the right amount of NEEDED information + History! Thank you, and I must say how similar my brain, life's interests, and teenage time spent drawing up all kinds of dream systems ALMOST DAILY AT LEAST ONCE EVERYDAY!!! GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER AND I AM PURCHASING A STROKER EITHER 12 OR 15, LATER TODAY, AS BOTH ARE BRAND NEW AMAZINGLY!
I was like you, started at age 12. I started out with the Stealth series, then the Vega series. I cut grass for 2 summers to afford bd1000.1 amp with 2 stroker 15s. To this day my favorite subs.
Yup! back in 98 had a friend we worked on his Toyota Camry. A pair CV Stroker on a infinite baffle like running free air using the trunk as a box had them on a stinger accumatch powered with a 5 channel McIntosh. It was great. Very expensive setup but it was awesome. Thanks for the video brought back memories.
Just wanted to say I was 12 years old also when I got into car audio in 94. My school notebooks looked the same way and in 98 I have a stroker 18 wired to a USamp hitting 153's db. I miss those days
Loved the original stroker. Had two 12's and they were awesome. Very musical but got loud as you could possibly want, i have so many good memories of 420 sunday cruises with these lovely subs pounding out all of my favorite songs. Driving heaven lol
I was born in '77 and we have similar mindsets but I had a pair of Kicker L7 '15's with 1137 continuous watts of Kicker power (Stillwater Designs) and I broke windows & cracked my windshield!!! Old-school term. #keepbumpin'
I was a teenager in the 90's and a young/broke car audio enthusiast. All I could do was read about those badass sub's in Autosound and Security. I always wanted some Strokers. I will be watching your future videos cause I have the same dream to buy old Strokers and refurb them. Show these youngnes nowadays what quality American made badass was all about. If you can ever get your hands on a Phoenix Gold Cyclone I think that would be an interesting video as well.
I was 14-15 when I got into car audio back in 92-93. I grew up just outside of Philly. I had such a passion for it. I would sit in class drawing up wiring schematics trying to figure out how it worked. In the past couple years I've caught the car audio bug again now that I can actually research everything I couldn't understand back then, thanks to youtube and the internet.
Dude! We met at Carlisle this year. I just installed Fanny!!! I love it! You're Fanny is cooling down a PPI am 2300 that is currently feeding a stroker 15 D2!! Great history on the stroker!
I dreamt for years of doing a build with Strokers, from the early 90's but ,like you, they were out of reach. Now im getting back into car audio and performance and after seeing this, may just have to see some of those dreams into reality.
Found This Video While Looking For A Review Of The Vega Pro 15. Isn’t What I Was Looking For But Great Great Video. You’ve Earned A Subscriber. I’ve Had This Account Around 10 Years & I’m Only Subscribed To 12 People. You’ve Earned It. Top Job Bro
Dude, we are the same age... class of 99. I feel like we were probably dreaming the same thing at the same time! and those subs were my first woofers! I had 2 tens in the front of my porsche 914. Did absolutely nothing for me in the cab. But I had q series 6.5 mb quarts, and a 2nd edition kicker solo 8 that i put in between the 2 front seats. made a nice little arm rest sub box. All powered by a rockford fosgate 4020. That system sounded so good it was amazing. I sound deadened the doors and floor and man it sounded excellent.
Love these drivers, I still have 2 stroker18’s from the late 90’s and my old Zapco 4K amplifier, they don’t build drivers like these anymore they’re essentially a pro audio driver with lower impedance voice coils that’s why they’re so efficient. Love them! Great video too.
Hey showtimeSPL, Wow I thought I was the last of a forgotten generation who really liked oldschool CV. I myself have been a huge CV fan mainly old-school since the early 1990s. I also had dual vc XL12s when I was 13-14 in the early 1991-2. I had my car stereo setup in my room before I had a car and was too young to drive lol. What really got my attention was when you started talking about the original earthquake subs well I have a pair of the old theater 18 inch Strokers 100% original. They look aged but still work perfect and will be using them in my theater once I get my house built. I also found 2 still new in plastic 12 inch strokers in the original boxes that will also be in the theater. I still need to build the enclosures for them and when I do I post them up on my channel during the build so you can see them. Great video!
I had a pair of Xl 12's in custom box mounted in the trunk well of my 85' T-Bird. It pounded so loud! All my friends loved it. I sure do miss that box.
I had a 12" cerwin vega stroker and thought it was loud until i heard a ddaudio 9500. I love it's unique look but modern subs outperform them with ease.
In some ways yes but in the early days of car audio, those drivers could be taken out of your car and used as home subs because they had a low fs. Most drivers today have a highish fs and designed strictly for loudness at 40Hz and above. I understand about cabin gain, but I find most modern subs amusical. I prefer old school paper subs with a low fs and tuned low as well.
@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt I am actually currently using my dd9515 in my home. It took a little bit of work to give in the power it can handle but i think it sounds decent. I built the enclosure exactly to spec as shown on ddaudio's site for 32hz.
@@craigreustle2192 Today alot of movies have response to 20Hz and below. I'm using a couple of 24" subs in my main system and a 21" in a secondary system. I think you may enjoy a good sub that does below 20Hz well. The 9500 has an fs of 37Hz so it may crack plaster at 40Hz but it probably puts out nothing below 30Hz. The subs I use are also very efficient so the power needs are reasonable. Cheers!
The earthquake system put out up to 130db's between 16 - 35hz in theaters witch would shake the plaster off the walls and ceilings and also damage to adjacent buildings. In 1974 mind you.
Thank you for sharing your beginnings in car audio. Were the same age, hearing you describe you beginnings sounded like my story. Also thank you for explaining how the Stroker works, always wondered what the spider and rod on the cone surface did. Subscribed!
I know this video is old at this point but I almost bought Bill's Ranger from him back in 1999 I think it was. We went back and fourth a bit about it but I didn't wind up pulling the trigger. This video reminded me of it.
good stuff bud love the old school design by cerwin that where definitely ahead of thar time nice to see you still got your originals laying around. boy what a love for your subs
I love these videos and i'm glad your making them again! If it wasn't for you i wouldn't be the sub builder I am today! Cant wait to see these strokers installed.
My first pair of subwoofers were Cerwin Vega Stroker D 12 and I found them in a small car audio shop for $150 a piece they were the best subs I’ve ever bought still till this day and $150 a piece was a absolute steal brand new in box never opened
Chris Denardo, owner of the Al & Eds Autosound shop in Escondido Ca is building a sound system in his 2014 Scion xB with 2 Stroker 15's. It will be ported.
Kove has a subwoofer called Armageddon. It's a 15, and I saw it handle 2000 watts by itself. Then the very next week, they were running 4000 watts bridged.
My first car system, back in the mid 80s had a couple of Le 15 " Vega subs with cloth accordion surrounds so no foam rot. They were light and efficient so required a fraction of the power to be as loud as some of the other big names, like JL. In fact a friend of mine still has one of them in Home Theater use almost 35 years later in a 10 ft3 box I helped him build.
Good to see another video from you. 👍 Now you got me wanting to pull out all of my car audio mags just to read about that white van. I hope that you get to finish your project and enjoy it.
I saw six 15 inch subwoofers in an s10 doing 168.9 with a Mack truck alternator... was awesome. . I still have the truck now. This was back when circuit city existed
My first set of subs i got when i started driving in 93 were the 12 xl series 120s. I had them in a 4 cu.ft box vented with 3in. Tubes about 6in. Long powered by a Pyramid pb1000 amplifier. Man those were the days. Lol. I have another set of 12 in subs i bought in 05 i dont remember much about them but i will soon. I to wanted strokers but my first child was in 94. You get the pic. Thanks for the memories..
2 of the systems posted in that video were friends of mine. Doug Humphrey had the 6 in his white Blazer with the routed boxes that created the port, The other with 12 in a Z wall was Jeremy Beavis from a shop called car stuff. I ran a single 15 inch stroker in my Ford Tempo, Done 155 DB port, and 142.4 official. I believe the prices were off at least in the car audio scense was it was 599,699 and 899. The 18 was over 1000 if I remember.
The home audio red surround Cerwin Vegas (are they all XL models?), are the greatest subwoofer of all time if we are talking about exposure. Those subs were set dressing in almost every urban sitcom and movie (possibly other genres, too), of the 90's. If you watch anything from that period, you're likely to see those bright red surrounds in a couple boxes in the background. I had four XL12's back in the day, so I'm likely more inclined to notice, but they are there.
Cerwin stroker was also my dream woofer since the 90s after i saw it in a magazine. Today i have a brand new old school stroker "12" dual 4 ohm that i`m gonna use in my home cinema setup :) I also have two XL "12" brand new. My current setup is four old school cerwin vega ( vega-line) 124 that i bought 1997 - 1998. My house is shaking :) Would like to find someone who can fix phoenix gold amps, i have a broken ms2125 in my garage. Nice video man!
That's awesome! !! I have 2 18s and a 15 inch stroker that a guy just gave away to me for free!!!! Said they were just sitting in his garage and he wanted to give them to somebody that would use them. I want to rebuild them and try em out though I've never reconed a sub and these look a little bit more difficult.
So classic, back then I knew Billy proud. I watched him cut the roof off that truck and cement it. He was using 4 Peavy black widows along with the strokes and it was loud as f×€k! Great vid!
Hey thanks Brantley. I was always such a huge fan of the work you guys did. I do know there was some confusion on who was the first over 160 because of how close it was in time, and lack of internet. Some of the publications had it wrong and I hope you are correctly accredited in the history books.
Thank you. If you can, please send to my personal IG at SparkedEd or message through YT. If it's to the sparked Innovations page, it's a shared account that I have limited access to and the last message on there just says it's unavailable for viewing.
The classic Stroker is the best sub woofer ever. I remember seeing them for the first time at a show in Sacramento in a guy's blazer. I think he had 4x 12's or 15's it was insane. I've always loved Cerwin Vega's, and they were actually my first speakers too. Not the Strokers but some AT 12's. I have some Re30 12's in my garage on an old Harmon Kardon receiver, and I love them!
I love the video. Man you do some amazing things with your production. I am a CV guy and had a XL-12 back in the day. I agree that they are amazing sounding subs. I have some videos of old school gear, it's just raw footage and embarrassing compared to what you have going on. I think something is wrong with youtube's algorithm because it shouldn't have taken me so long to find this awesome channel. Subscribed!
I remember when I was a kid 20 years ago a Vega rep came into a shop at told the owner if you have anything in here that can beat these I will give you 10 for free. They hooked up 1 in a Camaro and shattered the back window.
It was crazy how competitive those subs stayed. I had two stroker 15s from late 90s in 2009 and was doing 154s on music. And the crazy thing was the single 2ohm coils and their efficiency. They were subs ahead of amp tech really. I had them on a Memphis mojo 4k, the first batch of the skinny long black chrome amps, was a dealer back then. I took them to the first comp using them which was Elite summers nationals. Funny at the time only a few people knew what they were. They ate anything 50hz and up for breakfast, still haven't heard anything that sounds like they do while being that loud. And lucky for me a guy named Jimmy from Mpak audio had a hearse he had, if I remember correctly 8 stroker 18s on Lanzar optidrive 50c's from the mid 90s that he competed with. He helped me dial everything in. And I would still own them if aome jakeass hadn't broke in my car and stole everything.
Short answer… YES. Unfortunately 90% of people had no idea how much the enclosure mattered and were constantly putting them in too small of boxes, or two in a box that could only handle one. So they ended up sounding like shit when some people heard them because user didn’t know what they were doing.
I remember seeing cerwin vega strokers in late 90s when I was in highschool and was a kicker and Rockford fan as with Jl audio and thought there's no way a speaker with a metal pencil looking thing would ever sound right or even work
LOVED IT!!!! 👍👍👍

Still ain't anything better by my own ear. ALL dependent on Its choice enclosure and music that goes thru it. .and lastly where is its home..
Maaann the beginning when he said that he had subwoofer before he can drive. Man that brought back memories. Great video 👌
Me & my brother saved up & put subs, mids & tweets in our mom's Mercury Topaz back in the day
I worked all summer with my dad at his shop so I could buy two JL W1's and. Linear Power Lp200. I had the system before I had my drivers license.

I was introduced to these during the 90's as well. My uncle had 2 of these in an ASTRO van. You could hear him 2 miles away!

I ran a single 15 inch stroker in my Ford Tempo, Done 155 DB port, and 142.4 official. I believe the prices were off at least in the car audio scense was it was 599,699 and 899. The 18 was over 1000 if I remember.
I have 2 15" and finaly found a good review about them
The home audio red surround Cerwin Vegas (are they all XL models?), are the greatest subwoofer of all time if we are talking about exposure.
Wow literally my favourite and first combo, Vega subs and DSM amps, just missing the quart splits lol
My dream woofer as well.
Dude, this is awesome! I had 4 12's in a Ford Probe!
My house is shaking :)
Would like to find someone who can fix phoenix gold amps, i have a broken ms2125 in my garage.
And that collet lock was cool,I got a demo from the folks at sight and sound expo, in ga,man 12 12 inch strokers.
Glad to see you making videos again. I think the last video I saw of yours was when you were prepping your HHR for a system
Bro i had a book filled with system ideas and build like you. Lol awesome. Bass for life.
I looooovvvvveed the CV stroker...my favorite sub of all times
So classic, back then I knew Billy proud. I watched him cut the roof off that truck and cement it. He was using 4 Peavy black widows along with the strokes and it was loud as f×€k! Great vid!
I find your videos relaxing and encouraging! Awesome 👍
I appreciate the positive words man
My favorite video of all time
Ed, thanks for the mention - those were great times! Brantley Waites
Hey thanks Brantley. I was always such a huge fan of the work you guys did. I do know there was some confusion on who was the first over 160 because of how close it was in time, and lack of internet. Some of the publications had it wrong and I hope you are correctly accredited in the history books.
@@SparkedEd thank you and I really appreciate it!
@@SparkedEd I am sending you some info on IG
Thank you. If you can, please send to my personal IG at SparkedEd or message through YT. If it's to the sparked Innovations page, it's a shared account that I have limited access to and the last message on there just says it's unavailable for viewing.
@@SparkedEd can do. What’s the best way to send? I can email if that would work
Great video! Would love to see more CerwinVega! Content 🔈
Fair Oaks elect sold them in Sac Town thats when they were selling Hifonics
I actually seen the black truck in the early 2000s she was a beast !!great video
Subscribed!
Boom and thanks for your upbeat message tone...
Awesome video Ed!! I’m still in love with those subs.
Love those strockers. I had two rf- punch 8 in. Subs. People told me they sounded like 12s...😉
Still got an original MTX 15 from 1995. Its it the trooper now, still beating.
I remember when I was a kid 20 years ago a Vega rep came into a shop at told the owner if you have anything in here that can beat these I will give you 10 for free. They hooked up 1 in a Camaro and shattered the back window.
That's awesome brother keep up the good work
This is really cool, I didn't know the history of these
Still have my vegas from 1980 surrounds disenegrated years ago
CV’s always sounded good to me ....I used to rock them in big ass ported box on a couple hundred watts...so goood! Cheers!
I have my VS 150 crew in Vegas and I just found a pair of V12B in my ally !!
I wish I had all the Wish Lists that I made. I would look through my Crutchfield magazines in class sometimes lol
Man, that brings back memories.
I love some Cerwin Vegas!
Oh yeah had two of the strokers back in 98 in my 86 regal 1000rms single 4ohm subs I had a kicker zr1000 on each stroker pioneer gm-h120 on highs
Short answer… YES. Unfortunately 90% of people had no idea how much the enclosure mattered and were constantly putting them in too small of boxes, or two in a box that could only handle one. So they ended up sounding like shit when some people heard them because user didn’t know what they were doing.
My buddy had 2 18s in his truck buddy it was so wicked ,
Stroker love here
I remember seeing cerwin vega strokers in late 90s when I was in highschool and was a kicker and Rockford fan as with Jl audio and thought there's no way a speaker with a metal pencil looking thing would ever sound right or even work
The PJs are awesome
Awesome video!! I love the old Cerwin Vega subwoofers ! The Stroker remind me of the JBL GTI from the 90's great sounding very efficient woofers !
Jesus the stroker you said was never used is as old as I am!
Ive always wondered how those woofers worked. Thanks!
