      For some of us, it’s the only way we can experience a semi truck. Some of us don’t even have close up access to any trucks at all, so simulators are the only way we can experience what life is generally like behind the wheel of a big rig truck.

    This is absurdly outstanding. The larger battery pack probably has around 600v-900ah as well as the motor has minimum 480-720v power, impressive for such demanding weight job. With this expertise acquired, you guys have the potential for developing an all-electric system for future main battle tanks up to 45 tons, think about it. ;)

      Well, Tesla trucks will lose, easily.
      1) Volvo has truck making industry experience of decades. Decades.
      2) Volvo has been making electric trucks used on the road, in real life, by real customers, for real tasks for years.
      1) and 2) combined means, Volvo, specifically for electric trucks, has more data and know-how. Data and know-how that Tesla won't magically have. It'll take tesla same months or years to catch up with Volvo (assuming volvo stops improving today)
      If you talk of electric cars, sure Tesla is ahead of the game. But for electric TRUCKs, I'll pick a volvo over anything tesla does any day, because even non-electric volvo trucks are rock solid on their own.

    • @volvotrucks
      @volvotrucks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      In our view, gas-driven trucks are currently the best alternative to standard diesel trucks for heavy long-haul transports in Europe. Electromobility will play an important role for local as well as regional transport and the development of batteries and charging infrastructure will be important factors in its expansion. However, there is no one silver bullet solution available to cut carbon emissions. We will see a gradual introduction of alternative drivelines including battery-driven trucks and gas-driven trucks over the next couple of years. Electromobility using hydrogen fuel cells has the potential to reduce the need for batteries in heavy long-haul transport in the longer term.

      "Emergency brakes" are not involved in regenerative braking. The graphic for regen highlights the drive wheels, but of course the electricity is generated by the drive motors, not the wheels. Regeneration power and torque are similar to drive power and torque, limited by the battery's ability to absorb that power.

    Hi Volvo this is my suggestion for a small compromise resulting in a huge range capability! Instead of a pure BEV semi-tractor with 500+ KWh batteries that can do 300 km why not a smaller/lighter battery with Methanol Fuel Cells? there is barely any emissions of note compared to petrol/diesel and in the case of green methanol it actually is more eco-friendlier than big heavier batteries i believe! The great thing is unlike Hydrogen, Methanol is far easier/cheaper to store and transport...

    It's really cool, but I wonder about what truckers and freight carriers think of it. Is the battery capacity enough for LTL drivers doing in-city pickup-and-delivery runs all day? Potentially with heat or AC on? If not, are they alright with 90 minutes of down-time to recharge? There's a lot of things to consider. Also, where I live in Canada, major cities are hundreds of kilometres apart. At work we receive weekly shipments from 300 km away. These questions and concerns aside, I remain excited to see how the technology develops.

    • @drister007
      @drister007 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the battery capacity is enough for driving it a whole day and then you can recharge at night. It can even recharge from 0 to 80 % in just half an hour. In Europe you can only drive for 4 hours and then you MUST take 45 minutes break by law, during the brake you can charge (you don't have to, because the range is enough for the whole day of driving, but you can). By law you are not allowed to drive more than 8 hours per day in any truck, diesel or electric. So yes, the range is more then ehough. I am talking about Tesla semi.

      On paper it should perform better, with time. Unaware of the current state of Electric Truck engines, but EVs beat combustion engines by miles on everything that's called terrain or uphill. The near direct connection between motor and wheels and much simpler transmissions and lack of loss of force over multiple vehicle parts, is something you have to witness yourself by driving an EV.
      It's almost alien and feels very unreal when you're used to not getting anything groundbreakingly new over decades of car engineering in terms of actual performance, aside from acceleration.

      Fully electric trucks are ideal for transporting goods in and around cities on pre-defined routes which include a return to the home base at the end of the working day for charging.
      Distribution, urban construction and refuse collection (often for city and municipal authorities) are examples of segments that have been early adopters of electric trucks. But the capacity of Volvo’s heavy-duty trucks now also allows goods to be transported between cities.
      Electrification, in the form of battery electric and fuel cell vehicles, will become possible in more and more segments. At the moment, the main exceptions are long-haul transport, due to a lack of charging infrastructure, and heavy-duty transport applications in the timber, construction and mining industries.
