  • One of my main reasons for going to Florida in my Rivian R1T was to go to the Keys and be able to say I've been to the Southernmost Point in the continental US... I did that, but not a whole lot else, during my day trip down. Watch to find out why I wouldn't recommend this.

    If you'd gotten off the main road & driven around Big Pine Key, you'd see the famous "Key Deer" - they're a geographically isolated deer population; tiny, adorable & nearly tame. Great experience to offset the STRESS of having an EV!

    • @brandenflasch
      @brandenflasch  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The EV part wasn’t stressful to me - though it certainly could be to others. My “stress” was because I definitely didn’t plan enough time to properly enjoy the visit.

    I did this trip in my Ioniq 5. It was pretty easy, Top off at the Electrify America in Key Largo for the trip down. The speed limit is 45 much of the way, so our efficiency was crazy high. The return trip was a top up at the Electrify America in Key West. Easy Peasy. Lots of Chickens around the Key Largo chargers.

    I live in the South Florida area. My wife and I just did this in our Tesla Model S. Let's just say the charging in in Key west isnt there either for Tesla's yet either. Also stopped at Florida City and then went down. It's a nice drive and really am adventure with an EV.. lol. That supercharger on Big Pine Key has small deer that walk around right on the street there behind Winn-Dixie. They'll walk right up to you if you're still enough. It seems like Electrify America never works... Sad

    Just FYI - if you use the Bonvoy app by Marriott - you can search for hotels using the Filter for hotels with EV charging. And can search along a travel route. Super easy.

    Ah, the “charms” of South Florida! If you’re still down here in Florida, you might want to check out 7-11’s new DCFCs (branded as “7Charge”). There are several in the Tampa Bay area, as well as in Melbourne.

    I appreciate how you show the SC stations too. It really speaks volumes to see an 8 or 12 stall SC with all units empty or all units working properly in stark comparison to 4 CCS units with some broken, some with a line, etc. It shows fast charging can be done right.

    6:38 I saw a high clearance SUV with Lithuanian plates a few days ago in Silver City, NM. That's a long way from home.
    9:56 Thanks for saying Quebec the correct way! Few people outside of Canada pronounce it correctly.
    10:20 That's called a seagull intersection; also known as a turbo-T in Florida.
    11:25 I don't think the EV6 owner needed to call EA customer support, all they had to do was unplug the Polestar. I guess they were afraid of doing that, even though it would be justified since the Polestar finished charging.
    27:06 That charger should be fully functional. Try to activate in the app. The terminal screen on the dispenser says that it is just set to "log to screen off." So the screen is turned off but the unit should work.
    31:52 Both cables should work, I think someone put the cable up there because the holster was broken. Like I said before, those ABB Terra units have some of the worst cable holsters that break easily.

    6:40 wow what a machine! It has the unimog vibe but the chassis looks more like an on road commercial truck. I remember my brush with unimog ownership and those wheels and tires must have been 3 feet high. Big puppies. And that was a spec for sale used in Colorado about 1993. I bought a Toyota pickup for the same price. Way more practical and made several cross country trips in that thing, something no unimog can do since they have about a 50 mph top speed apparently.

    Seems EA makes zero effort having their chargers functional. Unless the cars are ID4s don’t they miss out on profitable revenue? Seem to be run like a non profit. Or are non Tesla EVs still exotic in Florida? If they apply for federal funding getting existing truly up at least 80% should be one requirement before any payment done. But I bet the government will pay for plan and not execution.

    Brandon I’m curious if you find EA best to activate payment by swiping right in the app on the right charger or what is my go to method, and that’s opening my phone’s virtual wallet and holding it up to the NFC reader? I say it’s my go to method and it wasn’t always that way but lately I realized two things about using the phone wallet. First it might take 3 to 4 seconds before it’s read and you hear a beep from the charger’s NFC reader to confirm it was read. And Second, before I became educated I was trying that virtual phone wallet against the credit card reader. And maybe that’s fine if you actually want to bypass your EA account and pay with a real credit card. But it always bugs and says “card not accepted” if it’s the EW virtual card there where as next to the grey and black hand with the waves symbol that’s where I get the hood beep and 95+% of the time this starts the charge for me.

    • @brandenflasch
      @brandenflasch  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I used to use swipe to start almost exclusively but that’s been super unreliable lately so I switched to Apple wallet card activate and that seems at least consistent
