This film version was immensely successful, and there have been a number of successful tours and revivals of this plus a television version. It is idiotic to suggest that a musical, which has received such acclaim and notoriety is “underrated “
Shirley Jones...One of the best voices in Hollywood during her time. I always enjoy her musicals. True story--Robert Preston was my father's squadron's operations officer (552nd BS, 9th AF) during WWII. (Dad is on the right in the photo in icon to the left of this post. Photo taken in Paris in 1945).
Fun, hahaha! Yeah, the song dates to 1957, from the original Broadway play by Meredith Wilson, adopted in 1962 for the film. A terrific piece of music, covered by numerous artists because of its timeless beauty.
This song came into my head for some reason. Did a search here on the tube. I grew up on Broadway musicals. I think I had a " crush" on Shirley Jones back in the day. Wow...she's still a knockout - hasn't aged a bit!

I knew Shirley from The Partridge Family...until I discovered her history prior to that. This gave me chills...what a beautiful voice and talent...love you Shirley! Thanks for posting this!
I met Shirley at the Dallas Stoneleigh Hotel swimming pool in 1956. She was in Dallas to promote the movie "Carousel". Beautiful lady with a few freckles.
Extraordinary! Shirley Jones captivated me as a six year old boy when I first saw her sing on the big screen in 1962. I am still captivated sixty years later.
i loved the turn of the century look of the film and Shirley was the best thing in it. it was said that Robert looked a tad aged in the film but he certainly pulled it off.
I think Shirley Jones had the most beautiful, rounded, naturally emotive voice of any musical theatre leading lady. I saw The Music Man on Broadway when I was a kid, in 1959 or early 1960. Eddie Albert had replaced Robert Preston in the lead; Barbara Cook was still playing Miss Marion. I sat in the second row with my grandmother. When you're that close you can see things like it's the spit coming out of Eddie Albert's mouth during the fast-paced delivery of *(Ya Got) Trouble* , and the sweat flying off his head. He was great though. I was fortunate also that my whole Jersey shore sixth grade class went in to see The Sound of Music on Broadway, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, in 1961.
When Shirley Jones auditioned for Oklahoma she was new to Broadway and after she sang her song for her audition piece Richard Rogers asked her to sing scales while he played scales on the piano and had her match him while he played through the octaves, stopped, looked at her astonished and asked her where her her range ends. Her voice is absolutely golden and angelic.
it's Richard Rodgers, for one thing. Bruce. and Shirley did not even know who he was when she sang "Best Things in Life are Free" at some talent audition in NY, and a R&H scout was there, and was so amazed, he called them, according to Shirley, and they came to hear her, and the rest is...
@@richardlee8495 I read Richard Rodgers' autobiography, and was astonished that Shirley Jones was not even mentioned in it. Can't for the life of me imagine why he would not have included the story of her discovery.
Music is a great joy to many of us. It always has been and will continue into the future. When I was a teen, my parents could always find me at the piano when visiting some of our relatives. My father bought me a piano and I started taking lessons.

This film version was immensely successful, and there have been a number of successful tours and revivals of this plus a television version. It is idiotic to suggest that a musical, which has received such acclaim and notoriety is “underrated “
My brain cant even comprehend such a beautyful voice! Amazing hands down
I've always enjoyed Shirley Jones' performances in whatever she did. Her 87th birthday is in 3 days, that is 31 March 2021. Happy birthday, Shirley!
Beautiful song. One of my all-time favorites from my childhood years.
I just auditioned for this show at my high school and I never knew this song was from this show. I've only ever heard the Beatles version.
Fun, hahaha! Yeah, the song dates to 1957, from the original Broadway play by Meredith Wilson, adopted in 1962 for the film. A terrific piece of music, covered by numerous artists because of its timeless beauty.
Необыкновенно красиво!!! Эта песня останется прекрасной навсегда.
This song came into my head for some reason. Did a search here on the tube. I grew up on Broadway musicals. I think I had a " crush" on Shirley Jones back in the day. Wow...she's still a knockout - hasn't aged a bit!
Watching this in Lock down here in the UK. Just beautiful.
Stay safe.
Jones is so wonderfully in control of her voice. She is like a bell when she sings - every part of her turns into a beautful sound. The fact is, I love her!
My younger sister remembers Shirley from The Partridge Family. I'm a bit older and remember her outstanding contribution to film making. What an incredible talent.
beautiful song beautifully performed. Perfection, really
The lyrics are so touching
omg that lady’s voice is outstanding
I remember the first time I watched this film and this song played. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. The song stayed with me for years after even though I never got to watch the film again or hear its song again all those years.
Shirley Jones sang as beautifully as she was beautiful. I wish there were young singers like her today.
I knew Shirley from The Partridge Family...until I discovered her history prior to that. This gave me chills...what a beautiful voice and talent...love you Shirley! Thanks for posting this!
Shirley 's range and voice was truly lovely and a gift from above..
Fun Fact: Rudy Friml was my great uncle the broadway composer. That's who Professor Hill is talking about at the end of this clip!
That is my favorite song! I love Shirley Jones! What a beautiful voice! I just love the “Music Man”😊
One of my favourite songs ever brilliantly sung by shirley Jones. Love this film totally under rated. Great performance by Robert Preston
A great voice, kind, beautiful and a lovely personality. Hats off to Shirley Jones!
Such a great song! No wonder it was honoured by a cover by the Beatles(Esp. Paul)!
I met Shirley at the Dallas Stoneleigh Hotel swimming pool in 1956. She was in Dallas to promote the movie "Carousel". Beautiful lady with a few freckles.
Takes me back many years! Still lovely!
Thank you for posting this beautiful share. Shirley Jones was such a delight in all her films and her voice is superb.
I forgot what a dynamite voice Shirley Jones had! And what a lovely woman, all class!
Extraordinary! Shirley Jones captivated me as a six year old boy when I first saw her sing on the big screen in 1962. I am still captivated sixty years later.
Me, too. Also six at the time.
That was very very beautiful
i loved the turn of the century look of the film and Shirley was the best thing in it. it was said that Robert looked a tad aged in the film but he certainly pulled it off.
In that day & that culture, it would not be uncommon for an 'older' man to have a younger bride; heck- we still do it today!
came here because i learned that till there was you of The Beatles was a cover(my fav song btw)... and oh my god this is beautiful
One of the most romantic, musical movie scenes ever filmed. ❤️
Amazing song, and the beatles really added something in their version.
She was lovely back in the day :)
Men, this calls for emergency action. This man is a spellbinder. I want his credentials.
Academic certificates-nothing of the kind!
We need letters and papers!
MAKE HIM PUT UP A BOND.
I think he is sexy in a romantic way for sure
@@melissastruxness512 Yes!!!
I sang this in my high school chorus in 1969 and always loved the message. An amazing piece.
i get goosebumps and tears in my eyes from her voice. she is astounding!
Paul McCartney's favorite song.
Considering that it was one of the songs the Beatles sang on their 1964 Ed Sullivan debut I'm not surprised at all.
who cares what that senile chipmunk's favorite song is?
Ronette Pulaski fuck off
Ronette Pulaski
Wow... how edgy
@@BernardProfitendieu Senile Chipmunks 😂😂😂
Goodness, what a sweet and powerful voice that lady had. She could have been an opera singer.
@@richardlee8495 OK Nancy
@@richardlee8495 I read Richard Rodgers' autobiography, and was astonished that Shirley Jones was not even mentioned in it. Can't for the life of me imagine why he would not have included the story of her discovery.
It took me a year after watching Oklahoma to sit down and watch The Music Man
Music is a great joy to many of us. It always has been and will continue into the future. When I was a teen, my parents could always find me at the piano when visiting some of our relatives. My father bought me a piano and I started taking lessons.
LUV' This Film... Happy 80th Ms. Jones... LUV' YA!
Schmigadoon sent me here! First I heard Kristin Chenoweth sing this lovely song. Took me a while afterwards to watch this version. Shirley had such a beautiful voice.
Greatest musical ever. I'm so glad we get to sing this for Chorus.
she is a truly beautiful woman.
What an all-time great movie The Music Man continues to be. This scene is a classic! This movie is so vastly superior to the garbage Hollywood passes off as movies today. Shirley Jones has one of the most beautiful singing voices ever!
