    1996 i was 12 Years old, when i bought this baby from my collected christmas, birthday and pocket money. And right in this moment, 22 years later its still standing right beside my computer and looks like i bought it yesterday.
    I had many Lego (especially technic) before and after the Black Cat, but this will ever be my favorite Lego Set of all times.

    It's astonishing how detailed it is! Modern constructions are mostly filled with air only...

      You know that back in teh day lego cared more about trees? Because now they have too Manny pages got the instructions and not even (instructions for) a B model

    I love how most of the Model Team sets still look perfectly at home amongst today's most detailed of models. This line was huge when I was about 8-9 years old (early 90s) - I think by the time I was 10 in 1995, they were already on the way out. These sets were some of the defining sets of my childhood. Plus, unlike the modern detailed Creator sets, these sets actually had steering!

    "modern nonsense about how building on the carpet is bad and how opening bags in wrong order will kill you" That was hilarious. And true. Now I'm sad.

      i build on carpets and mix the bags and i havent died yet! i have only had several cancers.

    • @no_bitches0621
      @no_bitches0621 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      EpicDestroyer 667 I build on carpet, but how I'll build is I'll open the instructions, then open each bag when I need to.

    • @serendibite1598
      @serendibite1598 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I build on the carpet too, but only open each new bag when I need it. I'm glad I started building Lego sets after they instructions simplified, though.

      I feel your pain bro. I stared at LEGO City catalogs to get those PF trains...I begged my mom and dad to get me it...and it didn't work. But as I grown older I realized I was being selfish and begging to my parents was rude.

    This is still what I consider one of the best Lego sets ever released, they truly are not like this today. I miss sets like these.
    As for reviewing older sets, I enjoy a look back at what I consider to be the gold years of Lego. Before they had licensed products, and had to find ways to give their customer what they asked for, without causing legal issues.
    One thing that I think might be a neat comparison, is if you built a modern version to see what the set would look like if it was released today.

    Beautifull set, I used to have it as a kid. It took my father and me a lot of time to complete it. Even the 2nd truck that was possible to be made was pretty impressive. Thanks for this recap!

  • @jessetrupiano

    Holy cow yes more reviews like this!! I work at a 3rd Party Lego Store and most the new sets offer no where NEAR the amazing details and play value of classic sets!! It's pricey to collect them though... Well worth it!! 😁 also, fun fact: single rear tires, or "Super Singles" are actually gaining popularity in tractor trailers. They're more fuel efficient and offer the same, if not more utility than a "Dually" layout. Some problems with "Super Singles", though, are the lack of easy availability and flat tires run a bigger risk. This model, however, is still inaccurate with its single narrow tire layout as you pointed out. It's still an epic set!! Old gray looks amazing when well kept, and even better with the black and red!!

    I still have 5540 and 5580 assembled from when I first built them 30 years ago. Only two sets from my childhood I can say that about. 5571 was a big improvement over 5580 but I was into my dark ages by then.

  • @Hornisserus
    @Hornisserus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to have one of these, but it was disassembled and not all the details succeeded to survive these years. Now i am trying to rebuild it ordering details from bricklink. Thank you for the review and for the love you have put in it!

    I have this set, received it as a 10 year old, and still love it. I actually just found it, mostly intact, last week in a storage bin. Some of the grey is definitely yellowed, but it is going to look awesome in my office!

    • @TheDasHatti
      @TheDasHatti 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) Just like me. But i had it always displayed in my room. Unfotunally, i DID use it for playing, i had to rebuy the sweet little BlackCat. Now i have to look after the grey colour and how much chrome is missing...

  • @FanPhys
    @FanPhys 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved this review - I think it's a great idea to review some classics from the 80s, 90s etc. for us "old timers" :)
    Given the price of this model, it'd probably be more satisfying to spend a similar amount on new parts from bricklink and design a better, more up-to-date version of the truck. Based on current selling prices (around £200 in UK) it averages out at more than 10 pence per element, which is very high. Definitely one for the serious collectors!

    I still have to this day 5580, modified slightly but I feel this black cat model fell short, 5580 had the dual wheels on rear and a form of oscillating rear axles, this set being much larger should have allowed for these features and a simple drive train with working pistons,

    Been waiting for this review since 1997 :| Thank you for getting the set, and putting up the video of it, I've been looking to get one for so long but always end up buying some kind of train or another instead. It's good you found one with the inner tray and box in one piece. Awesome review overall, and yes, of course we'd love to see more of this stuff. It's what we all remember from when we were kids. If you want some kind of recommendation, you can try getting a 5591, and if it's just old LEGO in general, not just the Model Team ones, you can try your hand at a 6597 or a 6339. Good luck, and happy building!

    Very nice video! My uncle also owns some of the model team sets (5510, 5540, 5550, 5580 and 5590) and he was kind enough to let me take them apart and rebuild them when i was just 5 or 6 years old (in supervision of an adult of course) ^^ I enjoyed building them very much and to this day i think these models are just beautiful to display.

    Ile ja się nawzdychałem do tego zestawu w dzieciństwie, zawsze zachwycał mnie jego wielki rozmiar i nieporównywalny z żadnym innym zestawem LEGO poziom detali. Cieszę się że nagrałeś o nim materiał, mam nadzieję że będzie nam też dane obejrzeć film o konstrukcji alternatywnej.
    Widzę też że nie tylko mnie drażnią nowe instrukcje LEGO traktujące ludzi jak ćwierć mózgów.W sumie nie rozumiem czemu umieściłeś instrukcję jako wadę w podsumowaniu, dla mnie jest to wyraźna zaleta.
    Dziękuję za ten materiał i pozdrawiam.

    One thing that I wanted to see in the review but unfortunately was not part of it was to see full selection of chrome colored peaces. I usually never know which ones are custom and which ones are original in some peoples mocks. You sometimes also use chrome peaces in you mocks, do you use only official ones or allow for custom chromed?

    there was a model team before... a white-red truck with a flatbed carrying a plane...
    and a technic model called "super car", an all black car with white wheels and a bit of blue interior... i don't remember the model codes though, sorry.
    i wonder if those models are still available...

    Can you tell us more about what the change to bluish-grey had to do with the Star Wars license? I can't seem to find any articles about it.

    • @searme

      +Szymek Wasiak The Star Wars license required Lego to alter light gray and dark gray colors to better match the look of SW vehicles, which as you know are mostly gray.

    hey, me and my brother own the Model Team Ferrari 2556 and we picked it up for 2 dollars. came with the box, all the stickers on the sheet still and the car was built only once.
    FOR the truck, you said the rear wheels are supposed to have 2 wheels apiece, however, there are some trucks that use SUPER SINGLES as they are called. we own a semi with this type of wheels, but i don't think that they were popular back then. maybe lego invented them and truck companies copied lego :D
