In some nations, a leader is removed from office for jailing and executing his rivals, or becoming monstrously wealthy by cozying up to powerful interests, or ordering the militia to open fire on protesters, or overturning the legal system in order to cling to power decade after decade.
Nixon left the White House for refusing to cooperate with Congress regarding an election scandal. That's it. No money in offshore accounts, no piles of corpses, no blood in the halls of Congress. He resigned for obstructing justice.
Such a small thing. But, half a century ago, that's how seriously we took those small things.@@mikenixon2401

@@mikenixon2401His order to obstruct justice which was on the “Smoking Gun” tape may have been one foolish thing but the things that he didn’t want discovered were all serious matters. He would probably have wound up in prison had Ford not pardoned him. BTW, I was a big fan of Nixon’s and was with him until the end. However, like Goldwater, I reached the point where enough was enough.

@@davidcurran-z8g Watergate was nothing compared to what the Kennedys got away with. Richard Nixon man had an opportunity to lie under oath but never got that opportunity like like Bill Clinton did. Richard Nixon never would have allowed four Americans to die on September 11th and then cover it up like that piece of s***Obama did on September 11th 2012 in Benghazi. Richard Nixon would have never had an insane and incompetent withdrawal from Afghanistan where more than a dozen soldiers were killed in 85 billion dollars in military hardware were left behind! When Richard Nixon left office he left the world in the country better off than when he entered office on January 20th 1969

14:15 - 19:20: That, for me, was the most truly moving and powerful part of Nixon’s speech. We feel that just because we’ve fallen short and/or suffered a crippling and devastating loss in our lives, be it in our professional or personal lives, that all has ended and it’s not worth going forward and trying and enjoying anything anymore. But that must NEVER be the case!!!! We always needs to put the pain and loss behind us and solider on and do the very best with what we have in life and with ourselves as people. Spot on, Nixon!

He really had no other option, because the House Judiciary had already voted for three articles of impeachment, and the House was scheduled to vote on them. In the Senate, he almost certainly would have been removed from office had he not resigned. His last great service to our nation -- among many other achievements -- was his resignation from office and this supremely eloquent speech at the end of his service. I also believe that President Ford did exactly the right thing in pardoning Richard Nixon and sparing us from all the drama that could have otherwise ensured. Still, whatever his faults, Richard Nixon will go down in history as one of our very greatest presidents, and his family is justly proud of him.

I was born in 1975, but am a Kennedy assassination researcher and author. In doing that, I acquired an interest in Nixon as well, and have always admired him. I particularly respect his concession speech in 1960 ("I believe Mr. Kennedy is a good American, even though he believes I am not..."). I believe most of us here recognize the 1960 election was not exactly as on the level as one would hope due to some monkey business by the Kennedy camp. One must wonder what the world today might look like if '60 had gone differently, or even if just Watergate had not occurred. I don't believe Nixon's administration did anything that any number of others haven't done...he just got caught. I believe both Kennedy and Nixon were great men, but like all in men, great and otherwise, mistakes were made and vulnerabilities existed.
John Lennon made a remark on the very day on which he died in an interview with RKO in which he observed that there's a mystique that surrounds Kennedy, but perhaps that is due to the fact that he died early and "didn't live long enough to let us all down." Nixon, I believe, did live that long, and then long enough to redeem himself as a respected elder statesman. I was a freshman in college when Nixon died, and I recall hearing the news quite distinctly.
It's too bad more people think of the downfall rather than the true man.

I for the past 4 to 5 years have had a idea of a political fantasy for a movie or HBO special. My working title for it is The 5th Debate. Nixon and JFK in the afterlife debating their presidency's.

Nixon didn't have Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Alex Jones,............... defending him. We didn't have social media 50 years ago. All we had were ABC, CBS, & NBC. All three of them were basically giving our parents and grandparents the same news. But, in retrospect, Nixon was actually a good president compared to Carter, Obama, Bush Jr., Biden, even Trump.

Nixon would survive Watergate under today's morality. I think that for me in the wisdom of retrospect the lesson to be taken from the tragedy of Watergate is that we are often seen at our best when we discover within ourselves the capacity to forgive the weaknesses of others around us. For Ì know of one fact of this existence we may all be certain of and it is the one that finds every one of us only one mistake away from the judgement of others.
