this is the song that inspired me to pick up a harmonica. little did i know he was doing a tribute to sonny terry, who i later found out is one of the greatest harp players ever.
it's an A harmonica, but he's playing in the key of E. he's most chilling around the 1,2,3 and 4 draw (inhale) notes. mess around with those while listening to the song, and you should be able to figure it out.
COULD this be the best version of this song ive heard, been DYING to hear an extended one of this COOL COOL song,I hope one day he blows it right out with a digital delay and stuff--(jaw harp)and a cow bell maby B53s on a humazoo from the early 1970s.cool fun
------> He opted not to go to his funeral but sent his drummer to "represent" him. don't get me wrong i love his art not just the music but his outlandish performances. i'm not trying to be a troll. If i pissed anyone off it wasn't my intent.i just saw your post, and felt the need to post.
He didn't actually play the harmonica on that song...at about 55 seconds in he messes up and is about to sing when the harmonica plays, but he quickly recovers.
After watching several times, I still don't see it. It's worth noting that most harmonica players hold the harp in their left hand, just as Beck does. What he does do is switch the mic from his right hand to his left, but his harp is always in his left hand. I see nothing to suggest he isn't playing.
the short answer to that is...he isn't...he used to be but he, well for lack of a better word he changed.two things come to mind rite off the bat.First:the vid here is a giant Scientology find raiser/recruiting thing. idk the whole Scientology thing just lowers the cool factor and increases the douche factor to me.second and lastly:what seals the deal for douchiness is,3 years ago a good friend of his from memphis passed away continued----------->
he fucking owned that crowd with just a harmonica and his voice. that's power
This was and still is one of the best sets I've ever seen. I remember getting home from a weekend of mud and music and rushing out to buy Odelay!

It just doesn't get any better, I love this man for keeping American roots music(blues/folk etc.) alive for the current generation of listeners.
a harmonica never made me feel this good as this
Best harmonica soloing I've seen besides Blues Traveler. Awsome singing, I love Beck.
I suddenly and inexplicably feel compelled to regulate.
The guys in the front row bobbing their heads 3:29 LOL
I do the same thing every time I watch this 10 times a year
incredible outstanding harmonica-performance! Beck knows how to impress people. like he impressed me... 14 years ago.
“弾き語り”ならぬ“吹き語り”!ブルースハープのみでこの熱量はものすごいなぁ。ベックって本当に引き出し豊富なアーティストだと思う。
I was there! One of the bast live acts I've ever seen, even with the two feet of mud!
I don't understand how one person could be so goddamn cool.
This was one of the best acts I've ever seen! Beck was amazing! Yes, it was bloody muddy though!

I love this. I wish I knew how to play harmonica like that.

Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee are my favorite blues musicians. Beck's nod to Sonny Terry is so cool.
