Campervan conversion or stepvan rv conversion on a budget…which is better for a family of 4?

- Help! I need the perfect DIY Budget Camper Conversion!! Feedback and advice is welcomed as we figure out vanlife car camping lifestyle for a family of 4!
One idea I had for making the van work for your family is to take the VW Westphalia approach. Hinge the roof at the front, add a canvas surround, and put bunk beds in the back. If the lower bed can fold and become a bench seat during the day, then have swivel seats in the front that could work. Top down when traveling, and top up when sleeping at night.

Over the years we have converted 3 Econoline vans into campers. They have worked well for us, but there are only two of us. I have never had a step van, but I would think they would be, noisy, drafty, slow, and may get poor gas mileage. If your trips are not covering long distances, like ours do, then these issues may not matter as much to you. The step van's big plus of much more room may win out. Everything you do will have tradeoffs, you will have to write a list of pros and cons. I do think however, 4 people in a regular van is going to be mighty tight!
Would go with the box van..crawling around on your knees gets really tiring after a while....especially with 4 people...step vans usually don't take up more room than a sprinter ect..Michael ❤❤

I will park that work truck at truck stops Walmart and RV places my opinion and u will have way more room to build a shower and all type of things in the black truck but the van will be too small

Oh, and as for schoolies, I watched a video from a guy who made one, and talked about the issues. Wow, after that, I would never consider one of those!!! You may be better off finding a class C motorhome.
