  • The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has always been the go-to SUV for people who love off-roading, and even though it has gotten pricier and isn't that good to drive on-road, the boxy 4x4 is still very impressive when the pavement ends. In this video, autoTRADER.ca Road Test Editor Dan Ilika takes the two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon off-road to see what all the hype's about. He goes through the Wrangler's pros and cons, driving dynamics both on and off-road, as well as the fuel economy and pricing.

We have a 21 Rubicon and I can’t believe how great it rides on the road !

I love the two door Rubicon with the soft top cause it would be off majority of the time living in SoCal. Great review!!

i love the look of the soft top on the 2dr. but i live in banff and you get 8 months winter, 1 month spring, 1 month summer, and 2 months of fall/winter. My hard top stays year round and I take it off once a year for off roading in the summer

I totally prefer softtop as well. Hardtop is nice but a pain in the butt to remove and storage it.

The only Jeep is a 2 dr. I recently drove a 4 door JL Rubicon for a three hour drive and it handled on road better than I thought, but had this high pitch wind noise most of the trip. Even though it was a Rubicon, I hated the 4 doors, I absolutely despise them, just goofy, awkward and fugly !
Anyway, yesterday I drove a 2 door JL Sport with the 3.6L Pentastar and was very surprised how this drove. It was completely stock rolling on 31s and I was driving 80 with little effort, and one time hit 90+ and it was easy. It handled absolutely amazing for the preferred short wheel base. The interior was surprisingly good in that the rear seats have a good amount of leg room even with the front bucket seats all the way back. And the rear cargo area has much more room than my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn.
However, I definitely prefer my TJ because of how it's built, handles about as well as an '05 TJ can, modest 2" Old Man Emu coils, 32" KO2's and Fox 2.0 Shox and Fox steering stabilizer, etc. It's more my kind of Jeep, a true rugged utilitarian and far more akin to the military Willys MB and original Bantam Jeeps.
But if I were ever to get a Jeep beyond '06, it would be either a 2 door Rubicon JL with the stock 33's or a 2 door Willys with the stock 32's. And honestly, I would leave them alone, no need to ever modify them, they are extremely capable on and especially off road in stock form. However, these newer Jeeps have bells and whistles never meant for any pre Wrangler or Wrangler. Too much techno, way over the top and it certainly has its demographic, geared towards the coddled prius folks.
I want to point out something important. People foolishly mod out their rigs thinking they "need" 35's and up and a 3" - 7" lift to wheel. This is where the novice is taken advantage of by the aftermarket whores. Like the cereal companies saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the aftermarket will continue to take advantage of the not so sharpest tools in the shed.
    😎 Great video!

I'd prefer the two dr Rubicon also. I'm actually at the point of deciding between base trim (no options except diesel, not even electric windows) 2021 willys sport gladiator with ecodiesel, or an almost fully loaded 2dr 6 spd softtop gas Rubicon. Each within $500 of each other. I'm seriously thinking the 2dr Rubicon Wrangler is for me since. I even like the baby blue "chief clearcoat" color on the Wrangler which you can't get on gladiator

I love Dan and his reviews. Great job as always. Very curious how.The Wrangler will try to get Bronco buyers. The 392 V8 is in the works, but I wonder if they will start discounting the Wrangler msrp more to make it a better value. If off roaring is the priorith, this is the champ in my option with its multiple locking diffs. HTe 2 door is equally my favorite as it's proportionally correct for the Wrangler look in my opinion

if the 4Runner offered manual it would be a better contender. The 2 door rubicons turning radius is the BEST.

What are you talking about? you can't get a diesel in the 2 dr they are 4 doors only same for the 392. I do own a 2 dr Rubicon by the way and would have loved to be able to get a diesel option in it.
That is not an aggressive trail at all by the way. They are also good to drive on road as I have driven mine from Yellowknife, NT to Medicine Hat AB and back with no discomfort or issues.

If Toyota made a short WB body on frame, I'd be buying it. We need an FJ70 in the U.S., there's nothing to compete with a 2DR Jeep in compactness for the trails in the Northeast with trees all around and limited ability to turn around.

I love your review man but I have to object. The 3.6 (minivan motor) has nothing on the old AMC 4.0 liter straight six which was bullet proof.
