From what I've read, the most probable cause is his frequent molting. They drop claws after they molt sometimes, it's something people who care for them in large, public aquariums expect. He's probably fairly young lobster, so it's normal for him to molt this often. Ironically, a dropped claw is a sign that he's growing normally and he's very healthy.

I am completely new to this story this is my first Leon video ever and even I felt a disturbance in the force and felt like I had to click. (subscribed and going to watch from here on forward by the way.)
i just googled it and lobsters can take up to 2 years to regrow a claw, so its gonna be a wild ride to see our guy grow an entire arm back, hopefully all goes well.
4:45 As Leon flips the dropped claw around I can see an old injury to membrane between the claw to last knuckle joint that got infected and the infection had spread to the muscle as shown by that darkened patch on bottom of his claw shell. The injury might have been there all along and because of the infection, persisted through sheds. It may have been cause by many things but I highly doubt that the little jousting you did with him had anything to do with it. He was going to loose that claw from infection so his body disposed of it. When he sheds next you will probably see a tiny nub start to form a new claw. Check your redox potential (ORP) and keep it high during his recovery. I haven't found a video that covers what you have for a setup or what environmental parameters you are keeping track of. I do hope you keep his water temps as cool as he likes.

@@luceronelson777There is a lobster fisherman with a YT channel who says that lobsters are basically immortal unless they die from molting complications.
Fascinating to see his behaviour around this. The way he takes it over to the trash pile when he’s ready, as though say, Ok, I’ve made my peace with this situation, you can take it away now. And he watches you take it, as though he’s aware that this is a new chapter for him. @@snowkracker Quick Google search says a few months to a year... Actually thought it would be a little more than a year but at least we're not waiting for 5 whole years 😅
@@TigerSira I did google search it. I asked Q: “how long does it take for an adult lobster to completely grow a claw back” A: It can take several months for an adult lobster to fully regenerate a claw. The time it takes depends on the lobster's age and how quickly it's growing. A lobster that's young and growing quickly will regenerate its claw faster. It usually takes about five years for a lobster to regenerate a claw that's the same size as the one it lost.
I’m so glad that Leon seems okay. You did everything right; leaving the claw in the tank for a while, feeding him a good meal afterwards and checking him for signs of disease. Him having an appetite is a great sign and he looks as full of energy as usual. I have a lot of hope that he’ll regrow the claw no problem. (I’m a marine bio graduate and I looked after a similar lobster species for a while in an aquarium)
@@fourofcats5803 I generally agree with what was theorised in the video, he maybe got it a bit stuck, panicked and caused damage to the joint, then chose to remove it entirely. Lobster grow quickly and the shell doesn’t repair itself once it’s hardened so it’s probably instinct to just get rid of it and start again :) This is just my best guess though

Lobsters do live up to 100 years old. They are basically immortal and generally only die of exhaustion during a molt. The oldest recorded lobster was estimated to be over 140 years old.
I’m crying over this lobster at 8pm, I have no words for how scared I was when I saw the title and thumbnail, please stay with us for so much longer Leon!
As best as scientists can guesstimate, lobsters can live for decades. They seem to have similar lifespans to parrots and humans, so, unless Leon gets injured, sick, or becomes lunch, he should be around for a long long time.

Arm
i just googled it and lobsters can take up to 2 years to regrow a claw, so its gonna be a wild ride to see our guy grow an entire arm back, hopefully all goes well.
Leon got tired of winning all the jousting duels so he took off his claw. What a badass.
"I have a secret... I am NOT left handed!"
Great advice!
bless you kind stranger ❤

@@luceronelson777There is a lobster fisherman with a YT channel who says that lobsters are basically immortal unless they die from molting complications.
Fascinating to see his behaviour around this. The way he takes it over to the trash pile when he’s ready, as though say, Ok, I’ve made my peace with this situation, you can take it away now. And he watches you take it, as though he’s aware that this is a new chapter for him. I don’t believe in anthropomorphising animals but I often think they’re more cognisant than we realise, in their own way. I hope he carries on doing well! ❤

Hope you’re ready for about a 5 year wait for it to grow back completely
@@snowkracker Quick Google search says a few months to a year... Actually thought it would be a little more than a year but at least we're not waiting for 5 whole years 😅
@@TigerSira I did google search it. I asked
Q: “how long does it take for an adult lobster to completely grow a claw back”
A: It can take several months for an adult lobster to fully regenerate a claw.
Do you have any thoughts on why he would drop it?
@@fourofcats5803 I generally agree with what was theorised in the video, he maybe got it a bit stuck, panicked and caused damage to the joint, then chose to remove it entirely.
Lobster grow quickly and the shell doesn’t repair itself once it’s hardened so it’s probably instinct to just get rid of it and start again :)
This is just my best guess though

MAY LEON LIVE 100 YEARS
Lobsters do live up to 100 years old.
