Though your heart, it be broken, your life about to end No matter what you lost, be it a home, a love, a friend Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!
In december of 2020, my girlfriend and I broke up. After a few months of awkwardly living at her parents COVID restrictions lifted to the point of me being able to travel back to my home country, albeit in homeless shelter; "No matter what you lost, be it a home, a love, a friend." I've finally got my life stable again with a good job and a roof over my head. So, like the Mary Ellen Carter I've risen again. Thank you for making a cover of what now is my theme song for 2021.
As I've been dealing with the effects of chemotherapy and radiation (and the fear and anxiety of the cancer before it), this song has been an anchor in my mind, keeping me stable despite the waves around me. I will rise again. And I'll remember the Mary Ellen Carter with a tattoo when it's all over.
Thank you guys so much for this rendition and this album. Got the news last week that my dog has cancer and at most a couple months left and that hit really hard. This song and hard times come again no more have been a huge boon to me in this, but especially this one. It hurts a lot and it’ll hurt even more when we lose him. But like The Mary Ellen Carter I’ll do my best to rise again.
It won't shock anyone to hear that this song kept me going through hard times and pain when I was younger. It was always amazing to me how Stan could weave a narrative in so few words, but especially here. I've heard it covered time and again by bands who grew up listening to Stan Rogers, whose first experience with shanties and folk music was his voice hammering out the rhythm and defining how some of our cherished old songs would be sung for new generations even as he crafted new ones. But no matter how it's covered, it's always hard to compare the final verse and chorus to him and not come up lacking in some way. You've all proven to me for the first time that while difficult, measuring up to that standard isn't impossible. I knew as soon as I felt my hair rising that it was going to bring back all those emotions I felt the very first time I really understood the meaning and power in this song. Through the power of your voices this song rises again, may its tune always carry in the hearts of women and men. It's not the same path as the original took through us, but in your own way you've found your way to the heart of it.
It ain't just you. I Googled the song to see if it was based off a true story and the Wiki article mentioned how one of the only survivors of a shipwreck in the 80s was about to give up fighting the waves when the song came back to him and he survived until the coast guard got to him by intermittently singing "rise again" and holding his breath as the waves pushed him under.
At first I didn't like how upbeat this cover was compared to Stan Roger's rendition but as I listened I came to love it. At its core this is a song of victory and determination and that aspect certainly shines through here. Love you guys!
This is an amazing cover of I think my favorite Stan Roger's song. this song starts off as a story song like The Wreck of the Athens Queen but ends on such a great message. that message being you can literally hit rock bottom, have nothing but the ocean depths around to see, and you can bring yourself up(with some help from friends and family) to being above water again. now you may be worse for wear but your afloat and THAT'S what matters in the end.
I like that interpretation. Stan Rogers makes a point that the ship's crew pulled up The Mary Ellen Carter together. When you feel like you're drowning, you don't have to keep your head above water on your own. You can reach out to others to help you from sinking.
Personally my favorite of Stan's work is either Man with Blue Dolphin or The Idiot. Mostly cuz both resonate more with me as I've experienced similar things to those songs myself but Mary Ellen Carter and Nightingale/flowers of Bermuda are both excellent songs
I love love love how enthousiastic Robbie was here! The energy of the whole crew is amazing. I also can't wait for the behind-the-scenes video, it must've been freezing to film this! And lovely to see the drummer and bass player show up too!

I loved seeing you all on Desert Bus for Hope, two great groups of people together for a great cause! This song is wonderful, definitely a new favorite.
During long hours of studying I have made at habit of pausing every so often to listen to this song, just to lift my spirit and get the extra strength to continue
I grew up listening to Stan from age 4, and the Mary Ellen Carter was the first song I had heard in my dad’s car on the way to school, my dad having been given a burned disc of his hits by someone from the local folk club who had said my dads guitar playing sounded very similar. We have been listening to him ever since! On road trips to the Victorian Islands we would blast his songs, and proudly sing The Northwest Passage on the ferry boats. As I grew up, my passion for music grew as well, turning into a folkie much in the way that my dad had done. I started singing Stan Rogers, Jim Croce, Tom Paxton, Eric Bogle, etc. and proudly leading shanties at concerts for years. I moved to Ireland, and then I discovered you guys, in a neat video from 8 years ago now with you guys enjoying shanties and folk songs the way we did at our house for years and years 😃But through all those years, all the concerts and little coffee houses, we always had to explain who Stan Rogers was, and how important he was. I went from a casual observer of your stuff to an avid fan, and decided I wanted to come and see you live! So I came to your show, and one of your first songs in your set was The Mary Ellen Carter, and you really knew what he did and how important his work was! I stood near the front, and proudly cried when you guys nailed it the way you did. My faith and respect in you guys tripled that night. Keep up the wonderful work, fellas 💕
Rise again. Basically meets the Greek for a "resurrection song." Beautiful. You all are a treasure. Thank you for your talents! Keep going as long as you can!!!
Coming back to this a year on.. A: Still Love It B: The baseline will always remind me of '39 by Queen. A song which, being about travel over vast distances and the challenges thereof, seems very much in the Longest John's wheelhouse, even if starfaring rather than seafaring!
I love this version. It's seemingly just a copy of the Stan Rogers original, but it isn't at all. I've kept them both: Rogers emphasizes the lyric, and these guys emphasize the driving music. They're both terrific!
As a Canadian and a quiet fan of Stan Rodgers, I'm delighted to hear you guys breathing new life into his music. The energy and passion that you guys bring to this cover is a fitting tribute for a powerful message.

I just herd about Stan Rogers an hr ago watching a documentary on the plane he was on when he died and I looked him up and 6 days ago The Longest John's upload this video coincidents can be odd and R.I.P Stan
You all would have made Stan Rogers proud. What a joyful, energetic, passionate interpretation of his classic, iconic tribute to the persistence and dedication of the brave Men of the Sea!
I think this is the happiest I've seen Robbie in any of the videos and it's so lovely
I cannot put into words how much this song speaks to me and empowers me, both this and the OG Stan Rogers version.
Ever heard the Dan Hall cover?
You guys literally get better every time I hear you. Such an honor to cover Mr. Rogers, he's my hero.
It's always a good day for a Stan Rogers cover.
Loving the new mix. RIP Stan Rogers and glory to you, Longest Johns!
If an American can be excused for stealing a Britishism - this song is just a straight banger. Such a great cover. When you boys coming over the pond?

@@thelongestjohns fastest response time in the west
@@thelongestjohns This was the best possible way to learn about the new tour, and in my hometown too! See you guys in D.C.!
Rise again. Basically meets the Greek for a "resurrection song." Beautiful. You all are a treasure. Thank you for your talents! Keep going as long as you can!!!
Replying to myself! Thank God for you gents!!!
NICE SONG MEN! GOOD JOB!
I love the original but this was fun
Thanks, guys.
tears of sorrow, and shouts of joy .......... aye !!!!
What in the world is the bass player (Antonio? Is that his name?) playing? It looks like the love child of a cello and a guitar!
It's an acoustic bass I have one and it's amazing!
Stan would be proud!
As a Nova Scotian, I like this cover of Stan Rogers. You make every cover your own. Well done lads.
YES
I was surprised by the turn the song makes to be nothing but uplifting (pun intended). Thanks for being a positive group sharing joy with the world!
Stan Rogers would be proud!
"Then the Mary Ellen Carter settled LOL" 🤣
Love this song!
You boys always produce such excellent work!!! May your names not be lost to the knowledge of men!! ❤️❤️❤️
Coming back to this a year on..
A: Still Love It
B: The baseline will always remind me of '39 by Queen. A song which, being about travel over vast distances and the challenges thereof, seems very much in the Longest John's wheelhouse, even if starfaring rather than seafaring!
Very good, very very good
Very Adequate gents - worth the extra wait.
I love this version. It's seemingly just a copy of the Stan Rogers original, but it isn't at all. I've kept them both: Rogers emphasizes the lyric, and these guys emphasize the driving music. They're both terrific!
This song has such a wonderful message, of resilience, perseverance, and teamwork. I can't help but smile every time I hear it.
As a Canadian and a quiet fan of Stan Rodgers, I'm delighted to hear you guys breathing new life into his music. The energy and passion that you guys bring to this cover is a fitting tribute for a powerful message.
this band is literally gonna carry this last school year
Stan's spirit smiles today, love this rendition lads!
1) one of my all time favourite Stan rogers songs
2) one of my favourite Longest Johns videos
So good!
Stan. The greatest.
Ah a Newfie classic, listened to this my whole childhood growing up in Newfoundland. Great cover!
