The intensity of JKA Kumite is something all karatekas can learn from. No wonder their playstyle is like that because of the 一撃必殺 concept, or "1 strike 1 kill". Gerard, again thank you for coming on the channel!

I train JKA Karate (my senseis are from Takushokudai), but since I'm a "kicker" I also love watching JKF (WKF) kumite, while JKA has strong punches, JKF has great kicks!

I prefer WKF because of kicks. Since i was a little i was doing Lethwai. We learnt lethwai and was one of the games we play during school breaks or after school. Instead of playing football or basketball we kicked each other. It was only a game so we never intend to hurt each other so no hits on the face thats why about 80% of the time are using kicks. This is why i prefer wkf because of the kicks i am used to but not taekwondo because kicks are too high i never kicked above shoulder or even chest area. Kicks mostly used are side kick, round house, and front kick. Back kicks too but rare.

Ippon- An incapacitating/finishing blow. The enemy is unable to continue attacking.
Wazari (half poimt)- A blow which partially disables the opponent, but the opponent is still capable of attacking, defending, etc.
JKA also has to learn to have more "control" of techniques and distance in kumite than WKF does. This is because JKA traditionally doesn't wear all the protective padding and gear, etc. that WKF uses when doing kumite. In the dojo, we never used ANY protective gear when sparring. In JKA tournaments, we only wore a mouth guard and mitts with a thin padding over just the knuckles.

I used to compete in JKA tournaments in my younger years. It can be very fast and very brutal. Funny thing is when we competed in WKF rules, we almost always get disqualified by using excessive contact. LOL. It's normal to have bloody nose after a JKA tourney. Apparently WKF requires "soft touch" and for a traditional Martial Artist, that is not very intuitive. Good content btw. Osu!

I personally see geri/ Kicks as high risk high reward while tsuki/punches are much more reliable. On fights where we get a much more limited sense of oportunity reliability becomes a crucial factor.thus jka kumite we might see tsuki & mae geri more than mawashi or ura

I was part of the JKA many years ago, when the ISKF was part of the JKA. In 2011, I left the ISKF to follow Frank Woon-A-Tai in his new organization, IKD. The JKA, ISKF and IKD style of tournament kumite is the same. Very traditional type of sparring. I prefer the "JKA" style of sparring. WKF is entertaining to watch but to a "JKA" style fighter they are very long matches.

WKF scoring criteria also requires proper timing and distance or it does not score.
My experience has taught me that front kicks & Oi Tsuki score ippon in traditional shobu ippon. Essential it has to be with the spirit of killing with one blow (ichi gekki itsasu).

It was an interesting video. I trained JKA karate long time, and later in other style sparring or championship I found an interesting disadvantage of this mentallity. I always hit or kicked my opponent first time, and second, and third, but later in the fight I lost my sharp mindset. I thought a lot about this problem, and I found the root of this: because I won in my mind. I could hit clearly two or three times my opponent and it is enough.

at about 3:00 when you start to explain Ippon, it is not accurate.
of course, you must have correct technique, distance, timing, kime, zanshin and be on target, but there are some attack scenarios that can score an ippon without knocking your opponent to the floor.
    eg.
Jodan Mawashi Geri with good control can score ippon.
Controlled takedown with a scoring technique on the downed opponent. (ashi barai x tsuki)
Jodan oi tsuki that is able to catch your opponent completely off guard , in other words they don't even try to block because of the speed and accuracy of the attack.
these are just some examples i have seen and heard off from local and international competitions.

Yeah, you can devastate your opponent with body shots, but you need to control strikes to the head, sam like in wkf. But the score is based on timing and precision, like ippon for the cleanest strike and wasari for a good but not perfect timing technique.

Basic differrence with WKF, JKA kumite is about training for the one strike that finishes an adversary as quickly as possible. It's not about winning competition. It is about sharpening the killing blow, because in the context of real fighting, we need to finish an opponent quickly and prepare to meet the next opponent.

Before WKF was Olympic they were WUKO which had Ippon and Sanbon, which embodied the essence of karate more fully, eg. Ippon if scored to the back. WKF has essentially followed the TKD path which which prioritised a safe spectator sport over and above the essence of karate. Everyone is talking about bloody noses etc. but ultimately if JKA had WKF gear there would be less. WKF talks a lot about kime and sanshin but more often than not lacks both. Ultimately both have great athletes who would do well in either/or.

I think the linear techniques are always best in karate. The circular techniques, for example the mawashi geri, look nice but I don´t use them anymore in kumite because sometimes I face opponents who are able to catch my leg. The linear techniques on the other hand like the mae geri for instance don´t have that kind of flaw! That´s better I think.

It's freakishly tragic that Shotokan masters spend years of their lives practicing kicks, blocks and hand strikes they never use in Kumite. Think about it, thousands of repetitions of side kicks, back kicks, palm strikes and knife hands (count the times they are done in kata through decades long careers), and they don't get used ONCE in competition or even Kumite. Hell like this guy they often don't even block, get out of the way, or redirect. They throw reverse punches, front kicks and try to beat each other to the punch and once every fifty matches a roundhouse kick. I pity them.

    Point tournament is for beginners.
You need constant full contact fighting. Thinking a punch or kick is effective is nonsense.
You need the contact to demonstrate effectiveness.
Also. Point fighting favors competitors who posses speed and timing.
An athlete has to demonstrate their toughness thru full contact.
Contest(rules)fighting does not always translate to real life combat.
