    The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a 2015 action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt. It is the sequel to the 2011 game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and the third game in The Witcher video game series, played in an open world with a third-person perspective. The games follow the Witcher series of fantasy novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski.
    The game takes place in a fictional fantasy world based on Slavic mythology. Players control Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer for hire known as a Witcher, and search for his adopted daughter, who is on the run from the otherworldly Wild Hunt.

    When it comes to the games and novels, the games take place in a alternate future after the books. This way there are constants and variables between the two, so each can be true and the players own creation.

      Yeah the Game is and isn't canon at the same time. You can play it, trying to do everything just like book Geralt would, but you are free to choose differently. But the Base setting, apart from Parts that come from the previous two games, can be seen as Lore.

    It's wise to consider the books and the games like separate stories but beware that the games take place AFTER the books. So if you decide to play the games first, you will get more than a few book spoilers. You'll probably also miss out on some cameos and some really nice references to things that happened between the characters in the books...
    Unless you really don't want spoilers for the books I'd recommend looking up some story summary of the books and earlier games before playing the Witcher 3.

    I feel like Witcher 3 did a good job of standing on its own without requiring much, if any, knowledge from the books. I played Witcher 3 before I played or read anything else and while there were certain things that I could tell were meant to be references/call backs, but it was never a big distraction and I never felt like it was taking away from the experience. HOWEVER.... the books really help flesh out some of those details and references. When I replayed W3 after reading the books, I understood so many more references and relationships. Also, reading the books made me finally play the first 2 games because I had to understand how we got from the end of the books to the start of W3.

  • @Danceofmasks
    @Danceofmasks 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, good idea.
    The author already said over and over and over that the games are DEFINITELY not canon.
    With good reason at first, the Witcher 1 was dubious in quality ... but the games are made after the "there will be no more books" stage.

  • @emmanuel1337
    @emmanuel1337 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You probably already know at this point, but the books do connect with the games, it's just that the games are essentially official fanfic (and not in a pejorative way) made by the studio that produced them (the author of the books isn't involved), which picks up after the books end, taking a specific interpretation of their ending and going from there. I'd appreciate if you had a "book talk" stream or video to discuss what you thought about them once you read at least one of them.
    Also, since some people unfortunately get confused and there's plenty of misinformation and bad advice floating around the internet about it, I'd like to make clear that the first book is "The Last Wish" and the second one is "Sword of Destiny" -- it's just that the stupid English publishers arbitrarily decided to separate them from the rest with no justifiable reason (having a slightly different narrative structure just aren't grounds to do so), but they're all part of the same overall timeline and story and in other countries are correctly labelled as such, so absolutely read them first before picking "Blood of Elves" and the rest, lest you miss a ton of awesome and important character, world and concepts presentation, development, etc.

    • @Liddles
      @Liddles  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for letting me know, I was actually confused when I looked them up in my Library's catalogue and multiple books are listed as the first one in the series so now I have my answer on where to start.
      Definitely have plans to chat about the books too, will probably do it in a video so I don't have to stress about spoiling things for others on a livestream.

    • @emmanuel1337
      @emmanuel1337 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Liddles No problem. It's awesome that you want to dive into the books as well and so much sooner than average -- they are honestly, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive The Witcher experience and way more consistent and well-written than the games are overall (the games are still good, though), it's just unfortunate that too many people don't like to read and need that universe to be represented in a game in order for them to appreciate the stuff (at least some go back to read once they're starved for more TW content hahaha).
      I'm really fortunate to have read the books first, then played each of the games in order, 'cause that pretty much doubled my enjoyment as I caught a ton of references and saw some stuff being very well represented and come to life through computer graphics.
      In any case, I'll be looking forward to your book reviews hahaha.

    Fun Fact:
    The Emperor, as in His Imperial Majesty Emhyr var Emreis "the white flame dancing on the graves of his foes" is somewhat bad yeah,
    as he's the one that brought the war over the lands and it were his soldiers that had their "fun" with that woman from the "Killing Monsters" Trailer.
    He got voiced by no other than Charles Dance a.k.a. Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones.
    The red haired Woman is Triss Merigold a sorceress and a friend of Yennefer of Vengerberg and also a love interest for geralt in TW3, bt they were a couple in W1 and 2 due to reasons.
    "Sauron" looks a little different, but no less intimidating ingame and is the Leader of the The Red Riders, his Name is Eredin Bréacc Glas and he also is the King of the Aen Elle Elves from another world.
    Later due the violence and swiftness they hunt for slaves in the World of the Aen Sheide Elves, which is ruled by humans, becoming known as The Wild Hunt and he getting known as the King of the Wild Hunt as he led them himself and with his crowned helmet.
    In Skellige they are known as the Wraiths of Morhogg and it is believed that they would bring the end of the world.
    The only Woman he really tracks in the game is Ciri, as he'll find Yennefer pretty early on.
    Ciri is so jfyi the (bio)daughter (Geralt is pretty much her real father tho) of that somewhat ebil Emperor and the Child of the Elder Blood, The Lady of Space and Time, which is the reason Eredin shifted his focus to and hunts her now, as he has plans and needs her powers.

    Honestly, the books are fairly badly written. They're riddled with amateurish problems. Like the overuse of the word, "suddenly". My god, the number of times events are described as suddenly happening, or characters suddenly do something with no explanation or reason given. It's always just suddenly this and suddenly that.
    Then there is the dialogue. Two characters will be speaking. Out of nowhere one of the characters will say something to a third character as though the third character has been with them the entire time, and then that third character will speak with no reference to them entering the conversation. You won't even get a "so-and-so said". All you get is a line of dialogue. It gets confusing at times.
    There is very little world building, and very few descriptions of the environment.
    Also, the books are subtitled The Witcher, but they should instead be titled The Mages, because Geralt hardly appears in them. The story instead is mostly from the viewpoint of various sorceresses; Yennifer, Triss, Ciri, etc. Geralt is almost a side character in his own books. Dandelion actually gets more story than Geralt does.
    The game is far, far better at telling the story. The first season of the Netflix live action is pretty good. The second and third seasons are absolute abominations. The best show though, is the Netflix animated movie, Nightmare of the Wolf. It's a prequel to the game and doesn't spoil anything. It's very good and sticks close to the lore.
