    I can understand even better now why you were the teacher of the year when you were working in school. Your pace and fact presenting is so easy to follow, you're not missing a beat. The impeccable editing is also a factor here, but all in all, I never noticed I was watching for 30 mins haha. So the livestreaming setup with both affordable and versatile camera and lens to start with, I'd stop for a moment at the Sigma 16mm lens usage. Apart from it being so price worthy and great quality lens, I'm also very often utilizing Sony camera's "Clear Image Zoom". This function makes the wide angle Sigma 16mm tighter and even more versatile. Cheers!

    Thanks Tom. My Uncle and I were working on recording his life's story especially since his wife's passing so that he could pass an audio book to his grandchildren so that they will know the family stories. We were ready to record when he chose to be across the country to be near his daughter and the kids. So we are in the process of choosing equipment and how best to do this. We may go from audio only to a video. I have plenty of gear to send him but have forwarded this video to give him some options to consider. Thanks mate. Your videos do make a difference.

    3:31 Best singular advice for any video of any kind (& I imagine the one thing more people are making excuses *not* to do).
    Still can't believe there are national college football shows on ESPN being done on webcams. I just don't get why anyone wouldn't want to look so much vastly better, especially for a career. 💯

      @@tombuck For what it's worth, I actually reached out to a guy on ESPN with a national show from home to try to help with some of my old gear.
      He said they have a producer & they like the "rustic" look.
      To me, all I see is 1997 & eyes not looking at the camera when they speak with terrible audio quality (the easiest & cheapest fix), but I kinda had to respect his answer no matter how much I think it's inescapably silly.

    Amazing video, Tom - as always!! 👏 I’m using a ZV-E10 in my streaming setup as well and experienced serious problems with it overheating and shutting off (in a workshop 😬) when the room temperature was a little higher. Even with the “Auto Power OFF Temp.” setting set to “High” and using a dummy battery AC adapter. So I ended up mounting an aluminum heat sink and a small Noctua fan (NF-A4x10 5V) to the back of the camera. To further reduce the noise of the fan, I then also added a USB fan controller to it to be able to adjust the output voltage and throttle the speed/RPM, with the result that it isn’t audible at all in my recordings…
    Hope this helps if anyone runs into similar issues with this otherwise great camera.

    The main thing that annoys me about ZV-E10 as a streaming camera is that it crops in 4K30, and 30 fps is generally preferred for most streaming. That's one reason to favor the newer ZV-E10 II, as it doesn't crop. It also has much better USB streaming built in, so you can deduct the cost of the capture card, too.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's nice that the new one doesn't crop, but depending on your tastes/style, the Sigma 16 still matches the full frame 24, so it's not a huge issue. Definitely depends on which lens you have though.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tombuck True. The other thing I would say is that the old one really needed a dummy battery because it couldn’t keep the battery charged while streaming. The new one doesn’t have that issue. So between not needing an external capture card and the dummy battery, and the Sony officially supported power solution being $99, that really cuts into the price difference between the old and new models, and the new one is capable of more quality when recording, if you’re interested in that. I think the Mk II should be strongly considered.

    Great point! So glad you you brought this up for people looking for the best 4K image. Any webcam that says 4k is not the same as a 4K image from a camera. When I hook up my ZV-E10 & sigma (30mm or 16mm) lens as a webcam direct to my MacBook with no capture card via usbC in 720p is a far better image than my $300-$500 4k webcams I’ve reviewed.

    Off topic:
    What I’d like to see, if it hasn’t already been done, is: ‘USB Microphones with the iPad Only.’
    So, for example:
    Test the most popular USB microphones (Apogee HypeMic, RODE NT-USB+, Shure MV7 plus, etc.) with the latest iPad, an Apple Pencil and a Magic Keyboard. Note: Don’t cheat by mentioning other than an iPad and approved Apple accessories; don’t configure the mics on a PC / Mac.
    Use iOS apps only (Logic, LumaFusion, Final Cut Pro, Cubase 3, MetaRecorder, Ferrite and various plugins, etc.).
    Demonstrate the mics using: StreamYard, Zoom, Teams, Discord and Skype
    Do this in a room (sound isolated, if you wish) without any external power and without any other gear visible.
    Why do the above? The iPad is (not the MacBook, Mac Mini) currently, the top selling item from Apple. As for me, I have the above and the iPad is, in many instances, far easier to use - and with the same audio quality as using RODECasters or computers.

    Surprised you didn't touch on potential for audio/video delay when using separate inputs for each. I very commonly have noticed that mixing capture cards and other audio interfaces will introduce some bit of having the audio not match the video. OBS can add a delay to one of the signals to make it sync up again. Pretty sure Ecamm has that too, maybe you want to follow up on that. Or I should just check if you have a dedicated Ecamm video already that covers it.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      This is probably something I should've touched on for sure, but it can be tricky since there's no one size fits all answer.
      I think the biggest misconception is that the delay is a problem, when it's just a result of dealing with different signals carrying VERY different amounts of data. Audio often needs to be slowed down so video can "catch up." I do wish I would've gone into more detail on that!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      That used to be the case, but now no. Sony paid their dues by jumping into the mirrorless market early and having quite a few years to solve those problems. Some of the less expensive models can still overheat on some settings, but most of the mid-high end ones have no issues. And there are also the FX30/FX3 that have built in fans (my FX3 is currently filming an overheating test for some action cameras outside in 100 degree heat and it's going strong 💪 )

      @tombuck Thanks for your feedback! Its great that youre digging into these topics! I think many people are generally unsure about overheating issues with DSLR and mirrorless cameras. The 6000 series, in particular, often gets criticized in videos and forums. The ZV-E10 II also gets repeatedly called out in forums for overheating at 4K 60fps after about 20-25 minutes. Videomaker and other TH-camrs have already made videos about this issue.
      Overall, Im a big Sony fan and would generally prefer a Sony camera. However, I hadnt found that much mirrorless cameras under $2000 that can do 4K60 without overheating. There are exceptions like the Panasonic Lumix S5 M2 XE, Panasonic GH5 Mark II, or Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2. Many cameras capable of 4K recording are often limited to 30fps. However, 60fps has become the preferred standard for many streamers, especially for those who want to broadcast gaming content on platforms like Twitch.
      This topic could be really exciting to explore as content. There is a lot to unpack regarding camera performance, overheating issues, and the needs of different content creators.
      Because we both know what is important, but many streamers, podcasters etc. only have a very basic understanding of what needs to be considered and what doesnt and therefore quickly run into problems. 😵‍💫🤙
