  • In January, the CEOs of five major social media companies faced the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to speak to politicians called a failure to protect kids from sexual exploitation online.
ABC News’ Emmanuelle Saliba takes us behind the new technology looking to help keep child predators at bay as parents nationwide look to safeguard their children.

Any parent allowing their kids to use social media apps are completely clueless. These apps should be banned for anyone under 18.

A 13 year old with a 1,000 online friends? Come on now. Her parents are doing a VERY poor job in monitoring their child. Also, 13 year olds don't need smart phones. There's your first mistake..smh

I had a phone at 13, but it wasn't smart and very limited. Just put locks on it that only you can unlock and don'y use an iPhone cause they will hide apps under an app

@@hellobot67same! I got my first phone when I was 12, the only thing it could do was make phone calls, text and take awful grainy pictures. I think it's a good idea for most kids to have a cell phone so they can call their parents in an emergency (or even just to say hey mom, band practice is gonna run 30 minutes late so pick me up then), or just chat with their best friend over texting. No 13yo needs unlimited access to the internet in their pocket at all times. And at this point they can get around any parental controls, so they just shouldn't have smartphones. Bring back the flip phone!

When I was a kid, parents worried about drugs frying their children's brains. Now they worry about social media frying their children's brains. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

As a 26 yr old and recall when smartphones first came into existence. I see it's a parenting problem. Don't buy your kids tablets and smartphones to parent for you, to occupy their impressionable minds with content and social media applications that where initially designed for adult/young adult demographics.
It's common sense to not engage with anyone your not sure your familiar with on the internet especially if they reach out to you first.

Children should only have phones to talk and text. All other apps should be banned, but parents aren't restricting those apps. How difficult is it to restrict these apps or just block the app store/play store. This should have been the focus instead of worrying about drag queens reading books or, at a minimum, given the same attention

I suspect its a lot more than half a million predators online; think about how many celebrities, social media influencers, and just stories you hear on the news about people who end up being predators. I think there are a lot more predators out there than a lot of people realize, and both parents and kids are unprepared for dealing with it if they get targeted. When I was a kid in the early 2000s I had two run ins with predators in person, and a bunch online, but I never even realized the online danger until much much later on.

If you are a parent, you shouldn’t let your kids be on social media. They should be raising their kids in the real world not in some screen.

this has been an issue since the internet started. bottom line: as a society, we do not value family or children. the performative outrage and concern is cute but lets look at the reality. our laws surrounding the issues are super lax. the way we work stretches parents and limits their ability to be INVOLVED in a meaningful way. Parents try but this is an issue that can only be curved by changing American culture. Unfortunately, that goes against American value (money) so here we are and here we stay

Well it sure doesn’t help when some authorities think it’s normal for kids to be sexting and say they have the right to privacy when you put precautionary measures in place. Society better take heed, worse things are going to happen because instead of empowering parents, they’re against the only people that will give their life to make their children life safe.
