Excellent. Lots of people cover out of phase... but no one else has talked about how that the pickups are always somewhat out of phase due to pickup position and shown the signal patterns. Very helpful. Also great demos of out-of-phase being used on classic tunes.
I did this mod to my les paul along with a blender knob, so I can gradually add the out of phase sound. It works like a chime! Sometimes les pauls can be a bit tricky to stand out in a mix, so this mod helps a lot!
By far the best TH-cam demo of out-of-phase pickups. Great playing, and FANTASTIC tone. But your list of guitarists is missing a big name-Brian May! All three pickups on Red Special have polarity switches, and he uses the out-of-phase tone on most of Queen's most famous solos.
Yep! Been playing for 30+ years, and have never seen or heard such a clear explanation of it. Thank you for solving a lifetime mystery to me!! (And thank you for that tasty blues playing. Dayam.)
You could also buy a 6-way switch (which are available) to give all combinations: 1=bridge only, 2=both in series in phase, 3=both in series out-of-phase, 4=both in parallel in phase, 5=both in parallel out-of-phase, 6-neck only.
@@BuddaGuedes If you are interested, I've found a wiring diagram that allows these 6 sound modes, but using a 3 way switch and 2 push pull potenciometers. I think it's easier to use while playing, but I haven't built it yet, so I don't know if the diagram actually works, but it seems legit.
I recently flipped the magnet on the neck pickup in my les paul i absolutely love the sound but the volume drop is kinda annoying, do you know any trick in the wiring to kinda solve it? i have series/parallel wiring done as well
I don’t have the tech knowledge but I know it’s just a matter of reversing the polarity of one of the pickups. If they have enough cables it should be just a matter of swapping the cables soldering
If you would like to try series wiring with your Telecaster, buy an Oak Grigsby 4 Way Switch and get your friend to wire it for you. Then, you will get 6 sounds out of your Telecaster: Bridge, Bridge & Neck in Parallel in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Parallel out of Phase, Neck, Bridge & Neck in Series in Phase, Bridge & Neck in Series out of Phase.
My strat bridge pickup is out of phase (so position 2 sounds weird but position 4 sounds fine) I’m debating getting it fixed or keeping it that way, since it is more unique this way.
Buddha I've got a nashville I've just added a 7 way mod which has a 5 way switch and a push pull pot it's got series and parallel but how do I get the out of phase tone or do I have to do a four way mod add an wire to the neck and then put the wires around the other way so it's out of phase or do I already have it with my 7 way....confused.d
Will this mod if done in my Jackson dinky help give me more of a early sabbath, candlemass and trouble guitar tone with high gain orange or marshall amp?
Hi Budda, I am here in Canada. I was wanting to know if you could tell me where I could find a wiring diagram of how to do this to my Fender Telecaster. Much appreciated if you could tell me how to do it or do a video showing the steps. Thanks from Michel
Why nobody mentions the REAL king of the out of phase sound, T-Bone Walker? He basically set the standard for everyone who came after, from Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulson, Goree Carter to all the modern guys I don't even care about. Also check out Junior Barnard. Thank me later.
Thanks for the tips. TBone Walker is not that well known, that’s why. Although he was super important and I love his music. He was one of the main influencers of BB King too
@@BuddaGuedes I truly appreciate your video and your answer, but no, T-Bone Walker is not an unknown name. If you're into guitar you definitely have heard of Chuck Berry, B.B. King (as you correctly mention) but even the Allman Brothers Band... come on...
The great news is that You can!! I have it on my Knaggs Choptank (3 single coil pickups like a Strat) and on my Futone Signature model. Go and watch those videos if you wish
The Biggest "Blunder" is on the Gibson Jimmy Page Custom Shop Models where the 'Middle Pickup Position automatically defaults to a Peter Green 'Out of Phase' sound and (arguably )the most iconic Page Tone (Middle Position IN PHASE ) is not available! He probably uses this sound more than any other.. I don't know of any song where he uses a Les Paul out of phase. Must be somewhere in his solo career i suppose ?

Jimi was famous for using his wah as almost like a tone knob, cutting the bass for a solo. I’ve listened to countless recordings of him and he seemed to prefer a mid/treble- heavy sound. I think it’s possible but I don’t know for sure.
Hello fellow friend!! I'm from Argentina I arrived here by accident, looking for some info of this AWESOME mod. I recently made to my MIM Tele the so called "Broadcaster" circuit mod and I'm love again with the tones she brings me now jajja. But I want something more to do, because I play mostly blues and classic Rock stuff. It would be nice if you can enlight me some advice of how to do this mod, because the Tele have the ground connection on the bridge plate, and it is necessary to isolate it from the pickup. I read a few years ago that its simpler to do this mod on the neck pickup instead. Also one more question: ¿The push pull pot associated with this mod, is always be located on the "tone pot" or it can be made it on the Volume pot? ¿Is that a tradition that the tone pot needs to be push pull, or is by personal preference? Thanks a lot for your video, your tone is awesome, and your playing is one of the best musical things I ever heard from a long time.
Hey! Thanks a lot. I’m not a tech guy at all so I can’t help you on that. As for the push pull it can be either on the volume pot or on the tone. There are a lot of schematics online for this mod
You actually explained the principle! Somehow, after 25 years of guitar playing, I just tonight heard about this wiring trick. And I've looked at a few TH-cam videos to gain insight into what this sounds like, but despite a number of the other videos thinking that were explaining the principle behind this sound, they didn't understand (or at least didn't articulate, but it really sounded like they didn't understand) the basic idea of phase cancellation. You can't really tell people how this works without getting into waves and how amplitude sums if in phase and subtracts if out. You, thankfully, offer a *helpful* resource because you get into all that. Those other TH-camrs should have watched your video first before making theirs! Phase is important for anybody working with audio, but if you do anything with modular synthesizers, you'll also encounter a very different side of this concept. It's pretty fascinating so learning about this pickup wiring technique really interested me. Your video was definitely the best demonstration of it I found. I really appreciate your video and I'll check out the rest of your channel! Appreciate the enthusiasm!
Oh no, not Portugal. 😛 It's a beautiful country. It has such a different feel to Spain. And I like the idea of being able to smoke weed or hashish in public and it not being illegal.
Great demo. If you want some really weird inverted pickup sounds, checkout Big Black "Kerosene." Apparently one of their other tricks was notching flexible copper picks. Strange indeed.
I removed the phase reverse option on a one modded tele when I got a Nashville. I found the “neck and middle” sound far more useful. My “Fat Nash” has a four way switch. Tele bridge. - bridge and (Strat) middle. - bridge and (Gibson Humbucker) neck. - humbucker only.
That's all I ever thought the Telecaster was missing and you finally explained it so clearly! Was about to do the series-parallel humbucking mod but this seems more useful
Realy great video man. didn't know anything about this out of phase trick. Is it possibile to achieve on a strat, or is it just a thing of 2 pickups guitar?
love the outta phase sounds bro! i bought a used peavey raptor H/S/S strat clone a couple years ago and noticed in 2 and 4 it was outta phase...thought maybe the mid pup was wired backwards by mistake... pulled it apart to get a closer look and its wired up correctly...the pups are ceramic magnet...the magnet looked a bit crooked on the bottom of the mid pup...so i was able to simply push it to center... pulled it off the pup just to see if i could...it popped off nicely...i put it right back and marked the magnet and the pickup baseplate and re assembled the guitar leaving the bar mag on wrong... loved the tones in 2 and 4 outta phase esp with the humbucker! as icing on the cake i put a gilmour "modswitch" on the scratchplate and hooked it up b4 putting it all together...now theres a really wild tone with all 3 on at the same time lol! its stayin like it is! factory oopsie and lovin it!

If you EQ the second channel of your amp with more bass and use a channel switcher, it can provide a nice unique tone. But I get that you don't like it. I was into it from the days of James Burton playing with Ricky Nelson.
I discovered the out of phase sound by accident on a Les Paul copy. I installed a 1985 Schaller Humbucker pickup in the neck position and a brand new Golden Age overwound humbucker in the bridge. I couldn't figure out what was going on at first until I started researching on the internet to verify this was the deal. Sounds exactly as he describes, Nasal and like a wah-wah in the middle position with both volume pots set at 10. As soon as I back off one of the volume slightly I get the full signal from the other pickup.
I had never heard of phased pickups until I started learning Funk. Your explanation helped me. Thanks. You described the sound as “pointy”......I think that is perfect. And yes, it is supposed to be staccato and bright.
Budda, what it the deal with the big stone arch in the back ground of your vids ? You must shoot your videos in a really cool building. Very interesting

@@BuddaGuedes Haven't yet. But that's what's got me all over TH-cam - trying to get a sense of what sounds are possible, so I'll know what wiring scheme to follow. There are a lot of subtle differences between various wiring schemes, and I want to know what results from each. I recently sold an Ibanez with humbuckers, that I did all kinds of custom switching and filtering. Just acquired a Harley Benton telecaster, and looking to exploit some of this out-of phase mojo I'm hearing. Your video has actually been the most useful, most convincing example of a sound I'm going to aim for.
Absolutely perfect video to understand the thing! I've just resoldered my mid out of phase and I love that I can now use pos 2 and 4 (they were so redundant for me before). Thank you!!!
I have been in the process of attempting this same mod for my dual humbucker guitar two push pull pots one to switch the neck to series parallel and the bridge humbucker to do a phase reverse. Using cts tone shaper solderless pots. That out of phase and series parallel mod should allow me to get by with one guitar thank you so much for sharing this in english and explaining the wave canceling effect that gives us this sonic option to our library.👍👍
I had this done to my Tele - sounds too thin (yours sounds a bit fatter here) but I use an EQ pedal with bass/mids cranked up and it sounds great - I love your demos - SUPER EXCELLENT!!
Sounds like you lose some sustain when out of phase. I think I remember that on one I had a long time ago. Now I have a ferocious equalizer which can change the tone like that but you have to go over to it and change it rather than a switch on the guitar.
I got this sound by accident when I upgraded the pickups on a 72 Keef Richards Tele reissue I owned - the two pickups I replaced were made by different manufacturers who used opposite polarity in their standards. So when I switched to middle position = instant nasal tone. Andy Summers used this sound on his modified Tele - I think he used it on the Flanged/Delayed harmonics he did as sound fx on a lot of his early Police stuff. I never got round to fitting a switch so I could change it to normal.
Budda Guedes once I tried it I haven’t stopped it sounds so amazing whenever I play me teles that’s how I have the controls set even at shows on stage it comes out amazing!!
I just heard a James Burton interview with Joe Chambers in which James said that he could get this out of phase tone on Susy-Q by setting his pickup selector between positions one and two. I don't know if this still works.
In fact, I also have a strat and seeing as I never use the middle pickup selector by itself I'm thinking of modding it to be the bridge and the neck out of phase
Budda Guedes Thank you for your reply! Much appreciated. I'll look it up doing it that way! Would I not have to switch the magnets around? Always thought that was the magic :)
This may have been answered already, but what pickups are you using on that guitar? I'm in the process of souping up my Tele, and the out of phase switch... and with a gold foil... might be pretty sweet... but your rig sounds great! appreciate the video!
I just recently learned that Whole Lotta Love’s lead guitar is an out of phase guitar. I always assumed it was EQ at full! This video is great, super illustrative, and really cool! Cheers man! P.S: instant respect for the english comment. I’m from Spain and I think exactly the same way!
I’m more of a burner type player, but I really enjoyed your playing. As for your vid, I believe somehow that due to English not being your 1st language, to my surprise, your explanation was by far better than most. Overall, delightful.
It's a great sound. As someone already said, Brian May recorded a lot using out of phase tones. In conjunction with the "Deacy amp" he obtained a very distinct tone. I particulary like his guitar orchestrations in songs like Procession or God Save The Queen (it sounds almost like a group of cornets or an organ, in my opinion). I'm planning to do this kind of mod on a 2 pickups guitar, except I will tweak the connections in order to make it out-of-phase always, just like the old guitars. I don't need the normal configuration of the middle position (never use it), so I get that extra "out-of-phase sound". Thanks for the demo of the sounds and the explanations, just what I needed! Parabéns do Uruguai!
both sounds , in phase and out of phase sounded great i guess it really depends on what you want to create. Good Stuff ! I had a Fender Mustang that had a factory phase switch never should have sold that guitar , ugh !
Moda Mont of course it depends on what you’re looking to create. It all depends on the player!!! The out of phase was just a tone I was looking for a long time and finally figured it out. So I decided to share it with my audience. Someone might be looking for it too.
Maybe I’m confused but you throw the pickups out of phase on the tele so you can get the “2 and 4 way” strat sound if I’m correct? Right? Or am I opposite? Because your tele sounds way more strat like when you had them “in phase” in this video...
Your playing style really compliments the tone!! I don't love the sound, but it's definitely got its place. Especially in a big mix, it will slice right through
Great playing brother! Really enjoyed the video. I just obtained a Brian May Guitars Red Special. It's the first guitar I've had that allows phase selection on each pickup, and I am really having fun with it! Opens up a whole new range of tonal possibilties! Finally, a scientific explanation and a decent demo that's not just someone showing off, thank you!
Now to decide if I actually want the guitar I can't play to have this feature.
Ah ah. What’s the first you can’t play?
Thanks for your support
@@BuddaGuedes Oh, I have an increasing collection of cheap guitars, in the quest to find the one that clicks with me. Or has been imbued with some possessive guitar god ghost that makes even my fingers cause notes of joy to ring loud...
Currently messing with a cheap Stagg SG thing, and a Westone Spectrum DX in need of total overhaul - Both dual humbucker, so your vid was genuinely helpful :-)
Ok. Great to know that. Thanks for sharing
I go with whatever inspires me. And it’s mainly music! Thanks for your tips and have fun with your Sg and the out of phase tone
Excellent. Lots of people cover out of phase... but no one else has talked about how that the pickups are always somewhat out of phase due to pickup position and shown the signal patterns. Very helpful. Also great demos of out-of-phase being used on classic tunes.
Thanks a lot. I’m glad you liked it
I did this mod to my les paul along with a blender knob, so I can gradually add the out of phase sound. It works like a chime! Sometimes les pauls can be a bit tricky to stand out in a mix, so this mod helps a lot!
It’s really cool
Works like a"charm!" Jesus
By far the best TH-cam demo of out-of-phase pickups. Great playing, and FANTASTIC tone. But your list of guitarists is missing a big name-Brian May! All three pickups on Red Special have polarity switches, and he uses the out-of-phase tone on most of Queen's most famous solos.
you're right! I will refere to him on the description right away.
Thanks for the support.
That’s a great ideia!! I’ll look into it
@@BuddaGuedes If you are interested, I've found a wiring diagram that allows these 6 sound modes, but using a 3 way switch and 2 push pull potenciometers. I think it's easier to use while playing, but I haven't built it yet, so I don't know if the diagram actually works, but it seems legit.
Please send it via Facebook or Instagram

The Fender Baja 50:s Telecaster has the out of phase-mod as standard. A great value Tele!
I absolutely love mine! 😃❤️
👌👌
I recently flipped the magnet on the neck pickup in my les paul i absolutely love the sound but the volume drop is kinda annoying, do you know any trick in the wiring to kinda solve it? i have series/parallel wiring done as well
The volume drop is due to the cancelation. Use a boost or an overdrive pedal
My 50s & 60s baja telecasters both came stock for playing in series and parallel. It was nice to get a lesson on how they work. Thank you
Help. !!!! I have a custom bass with two p bass pickups. But they go out of phase when both picks are on. Anyway i can fix this problem. ??
I don’t have the tech knowledge but I know it’s just a matter of reversing the polarity of one of the pickups. If they have enough cables it should be just a matter of swapping the cables soldering
Anyone here because of Brian May
Here’s one of the greats using out of phase
Yes
Of course
@@BuddaGuedes, yes, but in addition to using out of phase his pickups were also wired in series.
That’s right.
What would out of phase sound like with active pickups? Would the compressing effect also address the lower output?
I’m not sure because I never tried it
You’d just do it before the preamp, so it’d be similar. You would still see some volume drop, but your base output is higher, so it would help
That’s probably right

Buddha I've got a nashville I've just added a 7 way mod which has a 5 way switch and a push pull pot it's got series and parallel but how do I get the out of phase tone or do I have to do a four way mod add an wire to the neck and then put the wires around the other way so it's out of phase or do I already have it with my 7 way....confused.d
For you to get the out of phase you’ll have to switch cables on one of your pickups, but I’m not sure how to do it
Will this mod if done in my Jackson dinky help give me more of a early sabbath, candlemass and trouble guitar tone with high gain orange or marshall amp?
Not really the thing!!

King (as you correctly mention) but even the Allman Brothers Band... come on...
So if you have 3 pickups, you can't do this?
The great news is that You can!! I have it on my Knaggs Choptank (3 single coil pickups like a Strat) and on my Futone Signature model. Go and watch those videos if you wish
@@BuddaGuedes Okay thank you. I have a Neck single coil, a middle single coil, and a humbucker at the bridge. On my Les Paul, I have 3 P-90's.
It works with all. It will just depend on how much cables your pickup has.
@@BuddaGuedes So it looks like, I can put a push pull phase knob on the center pickup?
You will have better results of using the neck and bridge, but the middle pickup also works
Jimmy page used a lot of different things in the studio! For example the solo on Stairway to Heaven is a Telecaster.
@@BuddaGuedes Yes spot on.. Tele was used on the 1st Album, Stairway Solo .A Strat was first used on Presence ..Where people suffer 'Cloth Ear' is Zep 2 and Zep 3... That's a Les Paul..How some hear a Telecaster there is beyond me..
I'm pretty sure that Hendrix used it in Freedom, thank for the kind explanation
I’m almost sure he didn’t but I’ll check it out!
Thanks for your comment
Hendrix did have similar tones but probably from a wah pedals in a fixed position
@@unknownkingdom I also thought that initially, but i think it might actually be the out of phase tone
Jimi was famous for using his wah as almost like a tone knob, cutting the bass for a solo. I’ve listened to countless recordings of him and he seemed to prefer a mid/treble- heavy sound. I think it’s possible but I don’t know for sure.
th-cam.com/video/SNuSVVorvGM/w-d-xo.html here’s a good example of him using his wah that way
reverse phase and out of phase are the same?
No. You must be taking off reverse wound on a middle Strat pickup.
Hello fellow friend!! I'm from Argentina
I arrived here by accident, looking for some info of this AWESOME mod.
Also one more question:
¿The push pull pot associated with this mod, is always be located on the "tone pot" or it can be made it on the Volume pot? ¿Is that a tradition that the tone pot needs to be push pull, or is by personal preference?
Thanks a lot for your video, your tone is awesome, and your playing is one of the best musical things I ever heard from a long time.
Hey! Thanks a lot. I’m not a tech guy at all so I can’t help you on that. As for the push pull it can be either on the volume pot or on the tone.
There are a lot of schematics online for this mod
This is really useful, and sounds like something you can have done without really damaging the guitar.
Frank zappa played the fuck out of out of phase tones. It you've ever heard apostrophe, it's so great
Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow
Thanks a lot for your comment and kind words

Hello, do you have a diagram for that wiring? Thank youuu
That’s why I use a push push knob. This way I can get both tones
That's all I ever thought the Telecaster was missing and you finally explained it so clearly!
Was about to do the series-parallel humbucking mod but this seems more useful
I don’t actually like that mod.
Realy great video man. didn't know anything about this out of phase trick. Is it possibile to achieve on a strat, or is it just a thing of 2 pickups guitar?
Yes it is. I have it on my Knaggs. It’s also great!!!
Steve Albini did it for all of Big Black’s stuff. He used SD Quarter Pounders
I have to asmit i do not like the out of phase squawk sound but i enjoyed learning about it
I love it. It’s such a great new sound
could you do this with a Allmanbothers guitar backing track?
love the outta phase sounds bro!
i bought a used peavey raptor H/S/S strat clone a couple years ago and noticed in 2 and 4 it was outta phase...thought maybe the mid pup was wired backwards by mistake...
pulled it apart to get a closer look and its wired up correctly...the pups are ceramic magnet...the magnet looked a bit crooked on the bottom of the mid pup...so i was able to simply push it to center...
pulled it off the pup just to see if i could...it popped off nicely...i put it right back and marked the magnet and the pickup baseplate and re assembled the guitar leaving the bar mag on wrong...
loved the tones in 2 and 4 outta phase esp with the humbucker!
as icing on the cake i put a gilmour "modswitch" on the scratchplate and hooked it up b4 putting it all together...now theres a really wild tone with all 3 on at the same time lol!
its stayin like it is! factory oopsie and lovin it!
That’s how it happen for the first time. By accident!!!
@@BuddaGuedes i have another peavey raptor that im changing out the pups in and i want to "re create" the tones of my older one...
ill wire the middle pup backwards on purpose lol...
it should sound nice with wilkinson vintage voiced single coils on neck n middle...and a guitarmadness "59er" humbucker on the bridge...also the gillmour mod switch...
Let me know how it worked out
My pickups were out of phase. I corrected it. I despise that thin sound.
It’s a cool sound but it’s a sound
If you EQ the second channel of your amp with more bass and use a channel switcher, it can provide a nice unique tone. But I get that you don't like it. I was into it from the days of James Burton playing with Ricky Nelson.
Budda Guedes: My Tele has the old metal tone controls that do not pop in/out. How can I get to the out of phase sound?
That’s a kid I did to mine. It’s not about the pots
Great explanation of phase cancellation!
🙏🙏🙏
I had never heard of phased pickups until I started learning Funk. Your explanation helped me. Thanks. You described the sound as “pointy”......I think that is perfect. And yes, it is supposed to be staccato and bright.
Great it helped. Thanks
Budda, what it the deal with the big stone arch in the back ground of your vids ? You must shoot your videos in a really cool building. Very interesting
Bryan Keith it’s an old police building. The arch was the old entrance to the prison cells.
Wow. That is the coolest thing ever ! I don't mean to pry but, is this a building u live in or just usr as a studio ? The building has got to have some rooms with great natural reverb.
It’s my studio and yes it does have some great natural Reverb places

Great, great video! The way you framed the shot was perfect for a one-camera presentation. You did so many of the things that I/we wish all guitar videos had: in-tune guitar, good playing, good miking, enthusiasm, etc. Keep churning out videos like this! (oh, and BTW, most people who post info on 'out-of-phase' sounds are using humbuckers, to demonstrate Peter Green tones - so I appreciate your use of the single-coil Tele!)
Thank you so much for your kind words. Do you use out of phase in any guitar?

Hey I thought about doing the same thing. Did you compete it? Do you like the out come?
I had this done to my Tele - sounds too thin (yours sounds a bit fatter here) but I use an EQ pedal with bass/mids cranked up and it sounds great - I love your demos - SUPER EXCELLENT!!

Hey man. Thanks to this video I added a phase switch on a push/push to my Tele and I’m in Motown heaven!
That’s right. So good!!!!
Sounds like you lose some sustain when out of phase. I think I remember that on one I had a long time ago. Now I have a ferocious equalizer which can change the tone like that but you have to go over to it and change it rather than a switch on the guitar.
And it’s not just an eq curve, although. It can do the iob
His Monster's Voice I’m addicted to this tone!!!
Thank you for this video it explains it perfectly and I always wanted to know what out of phase was.

I just heard a James Burton interview with Joe Chambers in which James said that he could get this out of phase tone on Susy-Q by setting his pickup selector between positions one and two. I don't know if this still works.
Is not the same out of phase. That’s the three Strat’s out of phase position 2 and 4. Back in the old days Strat guitars only had 3 positions

Thanks for doing your videos in English! Your knowledge and playing skills is great
It's a great sound.
Kwihan Woods thanks for sharing

Maybe I’m confused but you throw the pickups out of phase on the tele so you can get the “2 and 4 way” strat sound if I’m correct? Right? Or am I opposite? Because your tele sounds way more strat like when you had them “in phase” in this video...
No. The out of phase makes it sound thin and konky not like a Strat.. for that you would need a middle pickup
