Here is what I think will happen. 1) Because of chatgpt, generative AI is being overhyped causing company executives (who are basically technology ignorant) to over-faith in the capabilities and invest in ai tech while contributing to the decline in students pursuing jobs in software engineering and by the time they see that the AI tool isn't a replacement by any means, they will be forced to compete with the remaining market of engineers (with even less in the pipeline as today) and the salaries will blow up as the competition gets really high. 2) Ai (despite the obvious chatgpt predictability decline) is actually getting really smart and will basically replace all of the high-wage intellectual jobs, which consist of all the people that actually use it as a tool in the first place and prop up the economy driving all of these companies bankrupt because they basically killed the market of people that actually pay to use the service in the first place. Sure a business will implement it, but that business will go out of business too because all of the high-wage intellectual income has been eliminated and construction workers and tradesmen have no use for an AI tool when all they need is a hammer etc. AI already operates in factories that create these tools, but who is going to be buying houses now? SO eventually tradesmen and construction jobs will go out as well because all the people making upper middle class money is broke, and rich people don't spend that much on townships... Thus UBI will be introduced (which isn't a bad thing, shitty corporations will suffer the demise of their own greed). Or 3) We actually integrate AI into our workflow as an "assistant" while encouraging humans to use it to increase our intelligence (not replace us), and we evolve into a highly advanced species superpowered by AI which can do computation we cannot do currently, and we achieve immortality by learning to upload our consciousness into computers.. Money will be irrelevant at this point.
4) Nothing is going to happen. Ai is cool but is really dogshit because the tech existed for quite some time, people are just fooled by a chatbot with some amazing programming.

AI has a lot of its own issues, especially from a security standpoint. I’d argue at first it’ll be #4 then transition into #3.. where it will enable people. At the end of the day, it’s a tool… and we’ve had plenty of tools over the past 30 years… including the huge automation push. Ultimately, when you make shit over complicated, you need more people to fill the gaps… which was ultimately what resulted in the number of jobs we have today. Now whether or not we see a squeeze during that transition, is likely.:. Where corporations will suffer due to ignorance and catch on that they still need professionals to navigate the complexities of a modern platform that has now increased in complexity due to AI/ML.
It’s also important to note that what we’re talking about really is ANI, or narrow intelligence… they’re all niche… and like every job, there will be challenges communicating between the different niche-like evaluations which will require jobs in itself… to make sense of the outputs and contextualize it for a given scenario.
#1 and #4 sound the best I hope people don’t do number 3 I’m with incorporating it to make us more productive, but life is pointless without death immortality would be really boring after awhile besides if we don’t fix global warming nothing will survive a undoing of our current environment.

The reality is alot of other industries are at risk as well, think finance or HR. There's certain functions that can be replaced today, an example, imagine emailing someone in HR regarding your benefits, AI right now can quickly get that information over to you in seconds.

I would think software engineers would have the biggest advantage to transitioning into AI development as you already have the coding background but need to learn the networks and other AI concepts, but based on what I’ve read, I would think software engineers would have the easiest time getting into AI development
Getting into AI as a software engineer is like knowing how to play violin and learning to play guitar. There is an advantage in a sense that they are both string instruments but you still need to develop new skills

Most universities over here in Nigeria offer courses in software engineering rather than Ai
If AI can replace software engineers, what would stop everyone from using AI to write their own operating systems and putting Microsoft out of business? Or using AI to duplicate the most popular commercial software? I don't think AI is going to replace anything but low level programming, like websites or possibly optimizing code. The code itself is a set of instructions for the computer, and someone has to manually enter in most of how it functions. It can do vague things like art, but if you want specifics you still need a human to tell it what to do. Imagine trying to explain to someone how to build a car with words, it'd be a disaster. But you could use AI to help optimize and perform repetitive tasks for a human designing it, think of CATIA on steroids.

Im a final year engineering student in India and I have secured a job as a software engineer in a service based company. Due to the ongoing recession its been really difficult to land jobs as a fresher so Im glad I have one. However since the joining is during the July of 2024, Im really confused how do I go about upskilling myself till then. I do not really know where my interest lies (ML, Development,etc). I see people who are already aware the nieche they want to get into and that makes me feel as if I dont have it figured out. Ultimately, I want to end up in a product based start up where I can learn and contribute the most. However, I dont have any skillset apart from solving Leetcode problems (through which I landed my job). Lets be fair about this, using my knowedge, the ai and I can write contracts like a lawyer, the ai and I can write content like professional content writer, the ai and I can do the design like a real designer, the ai and I are the security experts, the ai and I can do the b2b conversations like a salesperson and after all the ai can even help me write code.
But if I ask it to write a full application, it can't or makes junior developer errors, which I then have to solve. Or have to explain to the ai, which in the end comes down to normal coding, but with normal human language instead of code.
I don't think I have to be scared jet, other (more important) people are going to loose their jobs first.
This is just the beginning of the era of volentairy jobs, you work because otherwise you get bored, because there is no need for it.

and yeah, generative AI was only widely introduced in less than a year ago, and it can already do 90% of the job. The fear is not AI taking over our job now, it can't. The fear is that in less than a year it can already do so much, and we can't imagine its limit in say 3-5 years.

bro, chatgpt has been out for what... a year at most?? last year we were creating ai images that looked like shit and now we are at beautiful art and photorealistic images. we can also make music too and clone voices. people that watch 1 hour programming tutorials on youtube can make chrome extensions just by copying and pasting code. the easy-to-make programs will be at risk first, and then the more complex ones will come later. there will be easier and easier ways to make programs, and the ai will only become smarter.
The situation is similar in translation and interpretation industry. I'm a translator and interpreter, and my business volume dropped drastically. Coupled with the economic crisis, I'm trying to survive.
I am confused and baffled as to how AI will replace software engineers. I am a developer and I use AI to assist me with my coding task on a daily basis. And I am having a hard time understanding what people mean by replace lol. Unless the AI is a robot, and can analyze problems in the real world (physical space) and create software to solve those problems, then yes. Now can AI become an engineer’s partner? Yes, of course. But a replacement? I’d say people who make this claim have never either used AI or never built anything.

I know i don't need Upwork anymore. I'm doing all my front end and associated back end structure myself with AI. I have saved thousands of dollars, learned a LOT, received GREAT advice, and avoided months of back and forth. All done with the patience no egotistic human could provide at this stage. Great engineers are still valuable. But the shakeup is here and now.
Whatever you fear can and will come true for you. Avoid allowing this to be your fear and then it won't come true for you. Make time to be alone to think how AI can actually benefit you and your career. See how that works. You can even create a self employment career using AI as your assistant. Think about it.

I believe that one ought to mention "code generators", i.e. software tools that generate programs based on a set of input parameters. Using AI to create software programs will ultimately utilize background tools of "code generators" while the frontend AI tools accept and refine the input parameters which is then fed into the "code generators" to create the software programs. This description ought to tell us whose jobs are in danger of being replaced.
My guess is:
1: Augments peoples skills and makes us all smarter, faster at our jobs
2: Autonomous AI Agents will eventually replace most jobs

There's no solution to it except bringing in some laws regulating usage of it, but that's highly unlikely.
China isn't going to slow down their AI so the US will be shooting itself on the foot if they regulate AI to save jobs. Right now it's a race to create an AI that can replace all humans and once they do that companies will increase profits by a million 👌
Either that happens or we'll live in a highly dystopic future full of censorship, fear and human inhibition. Those who say "my profession is safe" are absolute morons and have no idea of how crucial reciprocity is in economy.
That's what I'm scared of, I started studying Computer Science this year and 5 years from now, AI will be so much more advanced that I may never get a job with my degree. I'm afraid that all the struggle I'll go through will be useless.

Software engineer is a type of profession where you can take your business by your self you don't need to be employed as long as you have ideas you are good enough. To earn huge amount of money so dont care about AI. In fact I would say research about AI and make yourself good in AI.

AI will definitely replace tens of thousands newly graduated cs candidates who are simply ill equipped with their new job skills as an entry level software engineers.
The IT impact here in Romania is real, money are few and there are more and more skills required for not much money.
I will be attending a bootcamp that offers an ISA where i wont have to pay until i land a job making at least $50k. If i don't get a job, i can apply those skills in other fields.
If you are already a SE embrace it and become an AI Engineer it should be easier for you than someone starting out!

While I understand and somewhat agree with everything said in this short, I would like to go further and add another important point.
Keep expanding your knowledge and exercising your mind, everyone. Instead of fearing AI, fear the possibility of neglecting your own intellect. What I mean is, continuously challenge yourself to learn new things and build upon the knowledge you've acquired previously.
Keep progressing and growing. Remember, AI should complement, not replace, the use of your own cognitive abilities.

The invention of the car didn’t replace horses for decades. Most of the buggy-makers found much better work as carpenters, and a few actually became auto-mechanics.
It sounds like they lost their jobs as buggy makers and had to “up skill” to find new jobs which is what I talk about in the longer video

The average Software Engineer works like 30% on actually developing software, i.e. coding, writing unit tests. As long as AI cannot take over all the other tasks, I don't see a problem.

It’s only right that the most intelligent species takes over. Not just that if you put humans on anther planet far away and forced them to start over, the end result would not change. They will find ways to make life easier which would eventually lead to the development of technology and there for A.I., Repeating the same thing again. This is inevitable. AI is going to automate a lot of things undergrads were hired to do. To simplify: hiring undergrads had a few incentives for a company:
1. Cheap compared to seasoned ones
2. Can be easily trained
3. Integration with the company culture and internal datasets
Now, the developing AI tech meets all these criteria and in the future it's definitely going to surpass the expectations. Bigger companies would then have no need to hire fresh graduates, rather they will look for experienced people who can manage those AI tech. So getting into bigger companies are going to get harder and harder very fast.
However, there are huge prospects. Introduction of AI will enable many small businesses to thrive as the threshold of initial investment is getting lowered very quickly. Starting your own company or joining a startup is going to be the easier route to getting enough experience of the real world before getting into big companies in my opinion.
I think the opposite. AI can make a junior level engineer to be just as good as a senior engineer. that's where the big saving will be. I don't need a hire expensive , overpriced SEs.

Remember that everything in IT industry is a bubble, you don't have to compare IT with other fields. So, we will have IT companies that will choose AI and others not.
The car replacing horse analogy is not too much a great one because there is still a use for horses, and they are more expensive than cars to maintain.
Use of horses nowadays is like using cars only for racetracks - as a hobby, not a method of transportation.
Car racing is very expensive- most people have Porsche or other fancy sports cars and the maintenance for racing (like changing out your tires and breaks for every race) is very expensive

I don't want to scare anyone, but I have absolutely no knowledge of programming at all, but I watched a 2 hour course on the basics of programming and now I can make Chrome extensions using chatGPT. I just copy and paste. Still have 0 clue what I am doing. And this is the worst that AI is ever going to be. Imagine in 5 years where we create a UI for this stuff that is mainstream.

@@iamlegend0015 I just copy and paste the code into chatgpt, and I don't even say anything, and it tells me what I did wrong, and it prints out the correct code. Chatgpt 4 is wild. And this is only the beginning. It's going to have almost unlimited memory, so it can remember very long prompts, and it will probably be able to make the entire executable program, all with its libraries and modules and stuff included in a complete package for the user to download.

There is hope, some companies don't want to work with AI , because of security issues. But eventually by the year 2030 it is over for the engineers. They would have to focus on prompting and IT maintenance

think of all the adjectives for artificial sweetener and that is where AI will take us. A facsimile for intelligence can never replace the real thing. It just mimics, sometimes it’s even sweeter than the real thing, sometimes it’s less sweet so you need more of it.
By extrapolation could we not say,
Intelligence = Sugar
So once you know the importance of how sugar (glucose) works in your body - you will be confident in leaving AI where it belongs.

I don't think people understand what software engineers do. Software engineer is translator between humans and computers. I don't think this will change but rather they will start to translate between humans and AI and will be able to use English to do so rather than current programming languages. Think about simple task of counting down before liftoff. For software engineer that is many sentences to describe so it actually does what people commonly understand as counting down. Most of people cant even describe without making mistakes what it actually means. For example, did you think about specifying that countdown should go down in intervals of 1 every second until number 0 is reached ? Most people wouldn't think about describing this and would be surprised with effects of such inaccuracies in human language on final effect.

I don't think it will happen.
1. The complexity of software engineering requires more than just a few levels of training. It's all about iteration, and not being affected by feedback surprisingly. As a developer or constructer who don't know his own work clearly. Well, he will fuck up his guidance towards his AI. And the market won't let you try again. Take this risk if your really want to adapt AI.
2. Like what I mentioned before. It's not impossible to get the perfect AI. You just need perfect people PLUS tons of money. And when you finally get the model. Congrats, we have new trends, new ideologies You need to make a new model now.
3. AI in the end of the day is a huge job killer. It lower the amount of jobs needed significantly. It punishes honest workers and rewards copycats. It makes people dumber and less versatile in a long run. It will affect future generation in a way we can't predict etc.
4. Right now, AI seems not that bad simply because it's in its processing time and creates some job to help adapt it. But will human figure out a way to compensate its harm in the future? Hardly will happen with less and less energy available and new energy resource seems won't be a thing in near future. Well, unless we decided to kill the most and let AI replace the dead's roles. Which who know if it will happen or not.
5. But one thing is happening for sure. The market is being filled with AI made shit and making the real juicy stuff fail to get its deserved attention, which is really sad considering most of the people who decides to create their own things actually took a big risk of losing a ton. And some horribly crafted AI stuff just outnumbered them by having too much. Garbage defeats Great Works, that's the saddest thing can ever happens to a civilization.

Compete for what? Engineers are usually not competing with other engineers outside of the company
it made the software engineering career a bargain, imagine 5year experience were just junior and salary is also junior.
It will not replace many if any.
If they let ai replace thousands workers, that's less people being taxed.
