    Some vintage loudspeakers (the LS3/5a, Quad ELS 57 and Linn Isobarik spring to mind) have never been bettered at what they do best. Interesting point is a good 1957 system (say, for instance, Garrard 401 / SME arm / Shure cartridge with Quad valve amplification and Quad Electrostatics) could still hold its head high among some of the most rarefied audiophile systems. In my opinion the main benefit of advanced technology is not necessarily "reinventing the wheel" but allowing significant quality improvements to channel down into more affordable components.

      Pretty much. But I think when you look at the big picture with vintage audio, you’d have to spend a lot more money on contemporary equipment than you would with a few hundred bucks and a few months scouring Facebook marketplace. You can get a genuinely respectable audio system for ~$350 with vintage equipment. Amplification wise, I’d say a decent modern class D is good enough for a start, if your speakers are good and the amp is a decent match. Simply because amps can be a bit annoying with oxidized controls, capacitors going out, that a beginner or even moderate stereo enthusiast typically lacks the experience to deal with, and it can be expensive.
      Sure, some cheaper klipsch speakers might be a bit more revealing. But they really can’t capture the scope or attack of some old massive powerful loudspeakers.. or how the sound wafts in the air. They also tend to dig lower bass wise than many modern bookshelves. Again all of this in the sense that you’d have to spend quite a bit more to match the vintage tech.

    I have Vitage (late 80s) TAD speakers. It doesn't have the amazing power resistance capabilities of current drivers that can put 300w at good use. They take max 160w, and 60w continuous. My way of thinking is, any speaker, new, or old, if you like the sound, then every 12 years put new surrounds, and suspensions in them. If you use them with a lot of power, build some new crossovers every 12 to 15 years. I call it maintenance really, and you'll be glad you did, because they'll sound amazing!

    • @michaelgaddy8271
      @michaelgaddy8271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nbk1943 the surrounds are the foam or rubber at the top of the speaker cone. It fastens the speaker cone to the speaker basket, and they start to deteriorate over time causing the upper end to get out of alignment. The suspension is at the bottom of the cone, and the same can happen. It cost about $30-40 per speaker, but worth every penny if you love the sound they make. If you don't know of a speaker repair shop, ask a general manager at the movie theater, they'll know someone. I hope this helps.

    Modern speakers have the potential to sound amazing, the problem imo is in the voicing of the speaker, at first they sound very transparent and detailed but in reality they don't sound natural and are very fatiguing.

    This is subjective again. Guys listening to speakers in 60s, 70s or 80s develop a certain taste. A young audiophile listening in 2020 to Zu dirty weekend may not prefer that vintage sound. Because he/she didn’t grow up with it. I am told by rigid audiophiles that old SME tone arms & old vintage turntables are best for listening to pre 80’s music. My question is why are new space age titanium tone arms being developed? Why air suspended platters? To improve the sound🤔? Same applies to speakers

      Yep, exposure and, sometimes, associated events tie a little nostalgia to a lot of accidental ear training as we grow and listen - I grew up listening to very cheap stereo gear and the 1st stereo I bought sounded great to me becasue it was in the ball park of what i was used to. I was slowly exposed to better gear and so my taste and analysis became better over time. When I was given a pair of mid 70 AR speakers, (4x I think), in the mid 80s I was blown away again.

      M Pi Yes, sounding different doesn’t necessarily means sounding good. And, how one accepts CHANGE depends on individual person. I want to listen to Aretha Franklin on a Garrard 401 and also on a latest cutting edge German innovation. I will get a different flavour of her tone and music. DIFFERENT is the word, not BETTER or WORST. Well, it could be worst😊.

    Hi Paul,, thanks for these videos. I find myself watching one after the next these days. In your videos about speaker sensitivity, one thing that never came up in the question or reply was the Ohm rating of the speakers. For instance, my speakers are Pioneer Elites by Andrew Jones that are 4 Ohms rated 86dB sensitivity. How does that play a part when comparing sensitivity of an 8 Ohm speaker?

    • @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez
      @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sensitivity is for 8 Ω. Your speaker is roughly equivalent to 89 dB, 8 Ω speaker. Half the impedance, double intensity, so 3 dB less.

    • @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez
      @Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A dB / 2,83 V at 1 m for 8 Ω, or dB / 1 W. One watt, 1 W = (2,83 V)² / 8 Ω. A speaker 4 Ω will need 2 W for the same voltage. P = U·I , U = R· I, I = U/R, so P= U · U/R or P = U²/R.  (Edited by Tortuga) : However units are important, and the result might be lower: 86 dB/2,83 V for 8 Ω = 86 dB/ 1 W = 86 dB/2 W for 4 Ω = 83 dB/1 W for 4 Ω

    • @montynorth3009
      @montynorth3009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sensitivity is not specified in terms of the speaker impedance.
      It just refers to the loudness measured at a distance of 1 meter using a 2.83 volt sine wave.
      This voltage was originally derived from the 1 watt into 8 ohms, 2.83 squared divided by 8 equals the 1 watt.
      An 86db rated speaker of 4 ohm impedance will have the same sensitivity as an 86db speaker of 8 ohm impedance.
