  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge carries the Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695) across the mouth of Baltimore Harbor. The bridge is located within 100 yards of the location (which is marked out by a red, white, and blue buoy in the harbor) where the bridge's namesake is supposed to have witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on September 13-14, 1814 that inspired him to write what would eventually become our country's national anthem.
NOTE: This bridge no longer exists. On March 26, 2024, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed due to a collision with a container ship outbound from the Port of Baltimore. This video is presented as a historic document of travel over the bridge prior to the disaster.

I was scared shitless of that bridge when I was a kid. I would close my eyes whenever we drove across it. Even to this day it’s still uneasy to drive across it

It sure seems a challenging as it rises high above the water and just two lanes in either direction. I'd just stay in the right lane, put my blinker lights on and do my 40 MPH across it.

Man what a terrible tragedy for those who have lost their lives, to the commuters, community, and commerce in this region. It's going to be a long road to recovery, stay strong Maryland.

This was the only bridge I was ever afraid of in my life. When I was a teen there was a local tv channel that always seemed to show a telephoto shot of this bridge (similar to what is seen in the vid) that was terrifying looking. It looked like a roller coaster from hell...I was glad I didn't live in or frequent this part of Baltimore. Worse yet, my mom was afraid of it too.
All was well until one day I ended up getting on the Beltway and got lost! And then it appeared upon the horizon - my nemesis - looming menacingly in the distance thru my rain streaked windshield. “Oh, no, no, NO! Not the Key Bridge!” I thought as I instinctively tapped my brakes. I glanced quickly from side to side, looking for a way out or to reverse course. There was no where to turn back or cross to the opposite side. And so I was trapped!
As the land fell away beneath the road, I gripped the steering wheel tightly and tried to breathe. Would I slide off of the rain slicked road and into the water? Would my old car be able to handle the incline? So I hunkered down in my seat and stepped on the gas. This was it. The vanishing horizon, and then the truss part of the bridge appeared towering high above me and my relatively tiny late 70's Ford LTD. I glanced up for only a fraction of a second at the gargantuan iron cage that had now enveloped me. I didn't notice much of anything else - the other motorists crossing with me or whatever scenery I might have spied to my left or right. It was just me and the bridge. Time seemed to slow down to an eternity. I gripped the wheel and stayed in my lane, and finally I passed out of the steel rib cage of the hulking skeletal steel dinosaur. The horizon ahead of me reappeared, and the land on the other side was in sight. It was then I realized how hard my heart had been beating, and finally I was able to take some deep breaths.
So I had just made it across that sinister construction that my mom had warned me about and faced the thing I was taught to fear. And once I recomposed myself, I realized that it had looked a whole lot scarier than it actually was.
Two years ago I found myself crossing the Key Bridge again, but this time I had no fear, having made peace with my nightmare long ago. I was actually able to take in some of the scenery. I am glad I got to cross it (and make the return trip) one last time.

Must of been Filmed in the Middle of the COVID-19 lockdown, I’ve never seen traffic that light along that route. Maryland is spending 100’s of millions dollars to update the EzPass System so you won’t have to go through an old Toll Booth Structure, and won’t have to slow down.
