Mark Cerny "The Road to PS4" - 'No Hum, No Pajama' Edition @ gamelabs 2013

  • Thanks, Fred Dutton. This is an audio adjusted version. There's still a high pitched sound every now and then, but the consistent humming is reduced. It was a part of the feed. You can see the tech support guy going weird when he gets feedback. Also cut out that weird guy talking about his pajamas in the beginning.
    Mark Cerny gives a lecture on how he, first party studios, hardware developers, and a few notable core players @ Sony spent 20 years building experiences and learning valuable skills relevant to console design, and what mistakes led them full circle back to a console that was both new, powerful, and easy to develop for.

      We can see it already is, hes proved all that laughed at him during the road to PS5.
      More 3rd party games are running better on PS5 than XSX, while xsx has higher specs. Still haven't seen nothing yet more amazing looking and playing games await us.

    I watched this entire thing and it didn't feel like it was 47 minutes. The entire thing was highly entertaining and it's amazing to know just how involved he was in the aspects of gaming I consumed and in general. Mark Cerny is a visionary that also had the benefit of somehow always landing in the right place at the right time. This man is one of the biggest assets in not just gaming but in entertainment in general. Such an amazing story and addictive story telling ability.

    Love how he calls Ray Tracing exotic and unwanted by devs because of all the effort it'll take to adapt, yet it is now confirmed it for the PS5. We have certainly come a long way since then it would appear.
    Honestly, the PS5 is looking so sick! Going to be a pre-order for me (my first PlayStation pre-order in my life). Mum bought me my PS1 and PS2. Father bought me my PS3. I bought my own PS4 when I got my graduate job.

  • @Xarpolis
    @Xarpolis 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way he explained it, it takes 1-2 months for the graphics team to "learn" how to display a full size rendered image on the screen. It took between 6 months and a year for them to learn how to do it on the PS3, but it dropped all the way down to 1-2 months for the PS4. What that means is that MANY games will be available early on. The system is much easier to program for.

    It would have been imposible to implement backwards compatibility because the PS3's arhitecture is completely different from the PS4's one. Therefore, PS3 games cannot be natively played on PS4. They will be played through Gaikai, a cloud streaming service Sony recently bought, on the PS4. So, they somehow managed backwards compatibility.
    And Mark Cerny is a genius. Incredible character and a man with history. Great vision!

    Others reading should also note that PS4 launch titles have been in development for 2 years. Up until 6 months ago the PS4 only had 4GB of RAM. Killzone Shadow Fall uses 3GB of RAM for example. It's games that only started development recently, and will come out in late 2014, early 2015 that will be starting to utilise the full 7GB of RAM available to them, plus by that point, they've had plenty of time to get used to the new system. You should start to see a pretty big leap in 2 years time.

    This guy is pretty impressive. I hope both the PS4 and the XBOX will thrive, as well as the PC, because why wouldn't I. Also with no clear winner, the competition will be fierce, which is good for the consumer.
    The new console will be good for the whole game industry. Even PC games will get better because they might end up being the lead platform and indies might have an easier time getting onto the TV.

  • @OuroborosChoked

    This alone gives me so much confidence that the PS4 will be a great system. It's not corporate-speak or buzzwords. It's people talking with people and making connections and ensuring they're making the best system they can.
    Contrast with Microsoft who came right out of the gate with what they wanted consumers to buy - not what consumers wanted to buy - and with Nintendo and their core group doing what *they* want, not what the developers need. Sony's philosophy is just different... and logical.
