Derek, this song is a good demonstration of the paradox of Mylene Farmer. Mylene is one of the most secret artist with almost zero advertisement. She suddenly drops a song and all the medias are going bananas, her concerts usually sell out in hours as she can disappear from the light for 5 years, in total silent.
This song seems really joyfully and playful "it's a beautiful day, I go to bed, it's a beautiful day that ends now". But it reality it speeks about suicide. "I'm going to sleep for eternity". This is part of her engagement, here we talk about suicide amongst teenagers.
Yes, Mylène changed the lyrics. In the chorus, she says "It's a beautiful day, I'm going to bed." Originally, it was supposed to be "it's a beautiful day, I'm gonna kill myself." But she thought it was too dark and she didn't want to encourage young and fragile people to commit suicide. So she changed the lyrics. Yes, check out the music video with little drawings that Mylène made herself ;)
The meaning of the song stays the same though. Everything in the song is about suicide honestly, she's going to bed in daytime, talking about angels, eternity... But I feel that changing "kill myself" for "going to bed" add something more poetic (but more frightening, I love this song and find it terrifying at the same time).
The robot dance is wow. I will advise you to watch: "interlude danse des robots" from the same concert.

It's a correct video, don't worry. That's when the song ends and the interlude starts. It's one of my favourite songs, it was heavily rotated on Russian radio which made me really happy. I hope you react to «Ouverture» + «Vertige» from Live à Bercy concert, it's the only appearance you haven't seen.

M'effondre (live 2019) is great. The song is amazing. The voice is impressive with a lot of different key changes . And the official live video is an image compilation of the full show.

❤️ Mylène ❤️ So glad you finally got to this after we’ve been recommending it to you for so long now! This is the version that we’ve been recommending particularly because of the robots. Just LOVE her in this video. The audio (studio) version has a cute video which is a cartoon type of video which reminds me of the a-ha “Take On Me” video. This song always reminded me of Alizee with the way Mylène delivers the vocals and I agree with you as far as similar to Pet Shop Boys as far as the instrumental portion and arrangement.
The studio version is great for sure, another hit, positive vibes.

The fella on the keyboards is Laurent Boutonnat. He is Mylene's song writing partner -- he is also involved in the concert design. He is a highly trained pianist. The dancer with the ponytail has been with one of her dancers for several years - he is in her latest- just released - song.

It's the song that turned me into a Mylène stan 4 years ago, I was 13. My parents didn't really introduce me to her music so i only knew the classics like Sans Contrefaçon or Désenchantée.
I heard "C'est une belle journée" in a youtube video that was about hidden significations in music and i was completely attracted by this music and how it sounds, and the lyrics too. I was so curious to really discover what Mylène has been doing! I completely fell in love with her universe! And here I am, a huge Mylène stan!
Thank you ! I was sooooooo waiting for you to comment on that video. I was so scared by the robots at the time (and until today, they have eyes!!!!). In fact five robots are dancing alone, you don't have it on that video but look at it it's pretty cool.
The robots, more than two in memory, make the interlude by dancing in the usual place of the dancers. It's impressive.
There are two references to poems in this song: "le dormeur du val" by Rimbaud and "Poèmes en prose" by Pierre Reverdy
This version is nice, but I prefer the original. But I like this song, and this association of a cheerful and catchy melody (which remains in mind) with a text taking up dark themes such as discomfort or suicide.
Btw there were cameras in the robots heads. So the little red coloured footages which you can see through the video are actually filmed by robots on the stage! Isn’t it cool!? :))
It was amazing live! I was in Geneva! Originally the lyrics were: „it’s a beautiful day - I’m going to kill myself.“ (« C’est une belle journée - je vais me tuer. ») The choice of words felt too definite and harsh and maybe a bit problematic. So she changed “tuer ” to “coucher”, playing on the double meaning of “I’m going to sleep” meaning sleeping or going to die. So the reference to dying is still there, but more hidden...
This is earlier than THE FARMER PROJECT. That one was even before the 2009 concerts!

Hey Dereck! Great review as always. The best way to enjoy this video is right when this video ends and blends in to the next song “ monkey me” which is the one and only live performance of this song. Both songs are great the first one with the robots is from the 80s and monkey me is from 2013. I saw her in concert in 2019 and she is better live. You seem like you like a lot of her songs I highly recommend you see her live. Love your genuine reviews.👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Dereck ! What a great choreography, with these A.I. robots, isn't it ? For me, this song is one of the highlights from her Timeless Tour. The OMV to this song is also worth watching, since it's a cartoon, drawn by MYLENE HERSELF ! The song lyrics, however, are not as uplifting, as the song is... it's actually about commiting suicide.

This is a song from 2001. The Farmer project is from 2008. Mylène had a huge period of électro single since 2008. You didn't react to a lot of her recent songs. You should check some too ! Fans prefer her old song in général but they are still very cool to listen!! Take a look at

You should watch, and REACT, to Je t aime Mélancolie. A 90's song... on stage in Timeless it's great, but if you want to be surprised try to watch the official video made in 1991, i am sure you d love it!!
