Chris Dreja Had to Retire Through Illness. Jim McCarty is still playing the Drums and the Yardbirds First Guitarist Tony "Top" Topham is Playing Guitar. Someones bound to say it was Eric Clapton, But Eric Clapton Replaced Top and Keith Relf isn't there for obvious reasons
Funny to hear so many people ask "Where is Dreja?" Back in the band's heydey no one even knew his name except as the "other guy" or "what's his name." He was the least-celebrated member of the band c. 1965. He didn't sing, he was rather homely, played nothing but one instrument which he only strummed. Songs of today have rhythm guitar parts, but bands do not have rhythm guitarists; a lot more skill and multi-talent is required. The old guy - not on drums - may be Top Topham the original lead guitarist. Sort of like the 5th Beatle, he is also unknown since he was a member before the hits came. Dreja is permanently retired. He is having a series of strokes and just waiting on the "big one" which will resign him to posterity.
Yes, the guitarist on the left is indeed Top Topham. It was really his band originally. His father wouldn't allow him to do this for a living, though (he was only about 16) so he had to leave, just as they were on the verge of the big time, and was replaced by Clapton. Top was a very talented creative guy in other respects, and was a very successful interior designer. His kids are creatively talented too. One is an internationally renowned chef. Sad to relate, top ain't well now either, mentally nor physically, like some others you mentioned. I'm not a musician, but am of that generation, with various ailments, and it feels like old Father Time is cutting us down with his scythe.
