This instrument is the most beautiful thing :o, nothing else warms my heart so much, I could listen for hours, I could list songs I'd love to hear covered on it for hours.
on a keyboard any chord may be played with one hand, but nearly every voicing that extends beyond the octave requires both hands. With the array mbira any DIATONIC chord may be played with one hand and in any VOICING, but chromatic chords require BOTH hands. You play chromatically by placing the two hands in two different diatonic key signature positions which allows you to jump between hands to form chromatic rhythmic runs
wow.....would you consider doing another recording of playing this lovely instrument, while making the recording about half an hour long....it would be the best to use in a meditation practice. Please and Thank you, for your kind consideration.
Be Love sorry for the late response - yes, thinking about it, in the meantime try this, features it quite a lot anotherfineday.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-tai-chi
Both assumptions are true, it takes a great effort to tune but it only need be adjusted a little after many years, the tuning is near permanent unless the instrument experiences some form of trauma. A lot of the cost is in the week or more it takes to tune
Harmonius Keys, at least the forms of the different types of chords (such as a dom7th, sus4, Maj-Min7th, etc.) are the same pattern up and down the whole instrument. Nothing like the complications of learning the keyboard with so many different patterns on the black and white keys. It's just tricky if you've learn the habit of going from side to side on a piano when the notes are "higher" or "lower." It's because the "higher" or "lower" tones on an array mbira goes from toward you to away from you, and skips every other note.
this is only a difficulty if we approach it as though it were a keyboard, by abandoning that approach it becomes a liberation. the keyboard forces the right hand to do the whole melody by itself (and the left hand to do the whole accompaniment) having the melody restricted to ONE hand is like trying to hop about on ONE leg, its simpler but far less effective. The array system allows the melody to exchange between the hands which is more complicated, just as walking on two legs is more complicated, but it is far more effective. Our culture has way too much linear melody because of this one handed narrow range approach, scales in linear order get boring fast, This arrangement breaks that approach up, both hands do both melody and accompaniment, a single hand can cover the whole range that not even both hands can cover on the keyboard, melodies are not liner and close but none linear and contain large range jumps which make things a lot more interesting
anotherfineday, which array mbira is this one, do you know what wood and model it is from the site? tone is gorgeous, but of course it's you who brought it out to shine. terrific playing btw
I've been hearing that Kalimbas are usually played on something called the Avalon Scale? Is that the scale you're playing in? Can you tell me what scale degrees are usually played in the Avalon Scale?
I want to learn the mbira but It costs millions times of in my budget 😔 so I got the kalimba, not the same but hopefully I can make sounds just like you one day
I think this instrument is more of a large chromatic karimba. The Mbira is a totally different thing and more traditional. Enjoy your kalimba, it's a lovely instrument.
You do need quite long fingernails (maybe 3-4 millimetres) - complex chords, technically yes, but would take some practice and some may be tricky. No midi possible on mine but google 'array mbira' and find the maker's site (can't put the link here) - they do make solid body versions and may have sorted midi but it wouldn't be an easy job and probably pretty pricey ...
So you want to say, playing on an mbira MUST imply a specific styl of music? Please, can you explain what the "mbira style" is? I am sure, there is no such thing as "mbira music" as you name it. There is a mbira (instrument) and a musician who plays whatever comes to his mind - thus creating "mbira music". Ancient composers have often created music for a particular instrument, say a violin sonata by J.S. Bach. It was the intention of the composer that his work should be heard on a violin. Nevertheless, there is no such thing as "violin music". In fact violinists play everything from classical over 12-tone, jazz and blues to pop and even metal. You cannot state one of those were not "violin music" - simply because it IS being played on violin. You can state, though, that an original composition intended to be played on a specific instrument by the composer, was not meant to be played on, say, a flute or guitar. Now, apply these arguments to the discussed mbira performance.
You are wrong. Mbira means the music played during a Karanga (Shona) traditional religious service, a BIRA. What you are playing is good, no doubt about it, but it is not mbira.
Today I learned something about traditional Zimbabwe Shona music from you - thank you. There is a good article about Shona music and Mbiras here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shona_music Shona music is the music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. There are several different types of traditional Shona music including mbira, singing, hosho and drumming. [...] The mbira is a traditional instrument of the Shona People often used in religious ceremonies. [...] So the Mbira is an instrument which is often used in traditional zimbabwean music as well as in religious ceremonies. Finally, this is true for all instruments in the world and thus I am as right as you claim to be. Have a nice day :)
discovered this instrument 2 minutes ago, already my favorite. New sleep aide.

anotherfineday1 I could listen to this particular instrument/composition/recording - forever -..... truly exquisite. Thank you so much.
This must take forever to tune, but so awesome.
The up side would be that you only have to tune it once.
Both assumptions are true, it takes a great effort to tune but it only need be adjusted a little after many years, the tuning is near permanent unless the instrument experiences some form of trauma. A lot of the cost is in the week or more it takes to tune
bill wesley-same name as the inventor of this instrument...
The intro sounds like Leave a light on by Kino.
Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like something you would hear in a movie like chronicles of narnia

It sounds like musical raindrops
An old blog of Imogen Heap brought this instrument my way.
This is amazing. Part of me was hoping it was going to be an ambient rendition of Heaven Beside you by Alice in Chains.
I always wanted to be able to carry some kinda piano around, that's the solution. Play my self away with the Kalimba, maybe I'll get one of these!
I would love to transpose this to guitar. sounds amazing.
this soundtrack remember me the games produced by Amanita design (ex: Machinarium and Samorost)

Stephen Webber google for 'Bill Wesley array mbira' and you'll find the maker, enjoy the discussion ;)
Hi, what kind of metal did you use to do it? Is easy to get it in the market? Thank you

Sounds like a DX7

Cultural appropriation MBIRA is FROM ZIMBABWE 🇿🇼
You shouldn’t call that a mbira. It’s whatever it is. It desecrates the Shona mbira itself.
