These mountain holler floods seem to be an integral part of life in Appalachia, appearing without warning and bringing their devastating effects upon these beleaguered people. As a small baby under one year of age, my mother and I were rescued from a similar flood in Buchanan County on Garden Creek back in ‘57. Later, I recall seeing the aftermath of several flash floods in the 1960’s in Richlands. Always tragic, but as you stated, the people somehow find the strength to rebuild their communities and lives amidst the destruction.
You would think they would realize maybe that's a bad idea 💡 but they rebuild each time and have the audacity (or simpleminds) to feel good rebuilding 🙄😄🙄🏄🌊

Thank you for posting. At 65 I have just started exploring my heritage and I know that my Scot-Irish mother's family was from a coal mining town somewhere in Buchanan county. Wish I had asked many more questions while she was still living....bet a lot of people can relate to that. Subscribed.

I grew up in the fifties in Big Rock, Buchanan county. We are probably kin some way.

Thank you many times over for coming to this area and sharing what you learned with each of us. Somehow, I cant stop watching it. Though hit extremely hard, you shared so much more than newscasters would care to show. And yet, you ended this beautifully, sharing the true fabric of our Appalachian culture in the strength of what America is meant to be. Thank you again❣
I remember living in Big Rock, Buchanan county as a kid and one night there was a big flood. This would have been around 1960 or around that year anyway. I remember the flood coming half way up the walls and my Father joined some other men to go out on the mountains to help rescue those who had been flooded worse. It was a scary night. My father, Grandfather, uncles, cousins etc... worked in the coal mines from the early 1900's and we moved North in 64 on my 12'th birthday. Many of my folks still live 'down home'. Thank you for this video. You’ve provided an unblinking look at the devastation the flood wrought on these poor people. I feel like I’ve been gut-punched. I know I’m not alone in asking for the Lord’s blessings to help with the healing.
Absolutely excellent video! My heart is broken for these good people! Living in McDowell County and working for many years in and around Buchanan I have witnessed this time and again, but thankfully never experienced it myself. I guess arguably , Buchanan and McDowell have suffered through as much or more of these tragedies as anyplace I know. Praying for these wonderful, resilient people! Again.
Thank you for bringing this video to light for us to see. I cannot imagine the terror and anguish at having to deal with a flood of this magnitude and the devastation afterwards. The cleanup must be just overwhelming. My prayers to all who are affected by this and hopes that they can recover as best as possible.
I want to thank you for this video. I recall very little attention given to this disaster in my area at the time. I appreciate the sensitivity and respect with which the interactions with those impacted by the flooding were done. I waited a day to post this comment so I would have the chance to keep it simple and concise. The compassion, resiliency, and empathy shown in this update provide us with a hopeful glimpse into the best of what people can do when something terrible happens in a community. There is heart in this video, the kind of goodness what still resides in humanity. Thanks for revealing a portion of it.

Just watched last night the video for the first time. Not sure how I missed it. I saw an up date video. So after this video I just knew I had to send my tieth this month. I sent in $100. And $10 for service fee. I looked at the amount raised and was heart broken at the total thus far. I sure hope these family find some way to continue to live especially with now winter is here. I will make sure my tieth continue through our Christmas. I just can't ever complain about hard times because after seeing this well. You know you have to be thankful instead of complaining.

Complete deviation. Prayers for complete recovery to my beautiful region where I was born. A little over a month the state of Kentucky is currently experiencing the same destruction. Prayers for everyone involved
The people in that part of Appalachia are very strong and are accustomed to hard work. They know how to do a lot with just a little. The coal they mined powered our nation. Thanks for the video.
I lived in the Luray Va area when hurricane Fran came up the valley. This video brought back memories, had neighbors lose everything, brought devastation to do many small communities in that area. I worked in Luray and was approx 6 miles from town, took me over 5 hours to get home roads were totally gone, bridges gone, houses gone. I was on high enough ground to thankfully not get hit to hard. No power for 7 days, no phone (land lines) for 6 days, national guard haul in clean water to us for about 10 days.
My heart goes out to those affected by this, I fully understand.

Josh that was so awesome, some of the best folks in the world are in Buchanon County Virginia, I had heard about the flooding, but your video is the first time I heard about how bad it was, praise God no one died and how people came together!!!

This video really captures the tragedy and the triumph of people over floods in West Virginia. In June 2019, I saw firsthand how neighbors joined together to clear debris off of bridges and yards and restore businesses into fully operational establishments within days. There is nothing like the can-do nature of West Virginians!

The only thing I didn't like about this video is that it wasn't long enough.
But I did enjoy watching this and think this was very well done.
It's currently Oct. 18 2022 . So I hope the people who endured this tragedy has recovered well and found the peace that only there hometown can bring.
The creeks are double the size now... if it hits again, it won't be as violent.

Wow! What some devastation. Like a mountain version of a hurricane hit that area
Brother, coming from Bristol, TN, you have hands down the BEST and most REAL and GENUINE Appalachian channel, period. Sure, there's storytellers, documentarians, historians, celebrators, and cultural commentators but they all DO one thing you do not, they persistently weave a "mountain mythos" in with the facts, as if the facts alone were not story enough. If you embellish anything it is the spirit and character of the people of this region and that falls well under the protection of your literary license for your work. If I want someone to keep it simple, keep it real, keep it straightforward, it is this channel alone where all are found. Thank you and keep on keeping on.

Happens every 10 years seems like ! Hurley 30 mins from grundy had a flood back in 2001-2002 which destroyed the area
They had one in August of last year and about 60 families were left homeless…fema did nothing

Everyone needs to pray for the people in southwest Virginia and eastern Kentucky to have lost everything in this flood.
I'm from Perry Co Kentucky but live right on the Knott Co border. I lost a lot of friends and some family last month in the flooding and had even more close calls. Entire neighborhoods are gone without a trace. Land cleared out like the trailers were never there. It has been devastating. 😭

I'll try adding the playlist to the description this week.. and it has experienced catastrophic flooding in past decades.
Yes bad, the one in the 70’s was awful the worse one, and a small incorporated town called Hurley got hit hard in 2003, and this happened.
The area is disadvantaged and now battered but is huge on community spirit.
These floods have affected nearly everybody where I live... I'm sorry to say, but this year there might not be a festival this year in order to prioritize all equipment and supplies to help those who lost their homes.

This is nothing compared to what parts of KY got. Buchanan County got off easy but its strange how people have forgotten about KY who got destroyed by this flood.
And b4 you start,this flooding is out my back door and I've got friends in KY so yeah I do know what I'm talking about.

That could be said of so many places couldn't it? Why build on the coast of Flordia...because it's where people want to be. Why build in the hills and hollers of Appalachia?...because it's where people want to be.
