Glad to see that two years later, in the R3, they used significantly less paste on the CPU and GPU. Just repasted my A15 R1 after five years, as temps were getting in mid 70s on idle. I was disgusted to see the entire GPU - and I really mean the whole thing, die and surrounding pcb, even the metal bracket - covered in hardend goop. Same on the CPU. Was a pain getting those to clean due to all the small components on the pcb around the die. But got it all cleaned up, swapped the thermal pads as well and boom, 15 degress cooler on idle and the fans hardly even turn on when I'm just browsing the net or watching youtube.
Thanks for this, very easy to follow. My temps dropped about 5 - 10 degrees across the board. Doesn't break 90 anymore, except for very rare occasions.
@@Esgrth just realized it's actually 170 and not 110. There also seems to be a bug where these settings don't save and reset after the computer either shuts off or even goes to sleep. But there are ways to fix that with a quick Google search 😉
Thanks for the short cut! Last time I repasted I followed Dell's disassembly instructions and basically disassembled the whole laptop. Now I can finish the repaste in less than half the time it took me last time.
Just did my 15 r4 and it varied a little but this guide was still helpful. Sadly the 15 r4 doesn't appear to be able to do the fan shroud trick to avoid Mobo removal, but it's 100% worth it. 10-20c lower across multiple benchmark programs. Highly recommend
I mean.. they make those things out of really tough plastic. I use mine all the time for opening stuff, and I still use my card every Christmas at the Lego store 😅😅
Did mine over the weekend (7820HK CPU and 1080GTX GPU). Is the newer model so you actually have to take the system board out to disconnect the fans. And here is where things get tricky, because you will have to disconnect a lot more cables, and the connectors are really fragile). I lost my touchpad in the process (damaged the connector on the system board), but when the time comes I will fix that. I can do without for now. My CPU temperatures dropped to below 75C (was getting up to 91C before), so the results are good. But the pain to replace the paste! Dell should use proper paste in the first place so people don't have to take the unit apart themselves. So when taking the unit apart, be careful as some connectors have a latch you need to pull and other have a latch that you need to flip up! Refer to the service manual as backup during the process.

Thank you for video. One detail regarding Killer 1435 WLAN card antenna connectors aren't explained. In my case I abandoned attempt for repasting after breaking WLAN card antena connector, it is frustrating. I didn't use force, but it is so fragile and currently waiting for new card.

Alienware cooling used to be so good, my M17x R4 never runs hotter than 65C, I would love to upgrade to new model, but the fact that disassemble process takes so long and cooling frankly suck I'm not going to do that just yet. If next revision is just as bad I might just turn to Asus or even Acer.
Just repasted my CPU and GPU with thermal grizzly kryonaut and I am experiencing normal thermals finally for this laptop. I constantly would hit 95-97 degrees celcius when playing games or doing stress tests and the PC would thermal throttle and power limit throttle. Now I'm able to play doom on ultra 1080p at 120+ FPS and the temps never hit over 86 celcius and that was just for a second. First time I repasted with arctic silver also. However it didnt perform any different. Kryonaut did the trick. I put a small amount on the heatsinks, not much but just a bit. Then just a thin but well spread layer across both CPU and GPU. Gotta say I'm finally happy. Best of luck with the repairs boys. Only took me about an hour and a half to do.
I'm dealing with the same thing right now. Didn't know what was going on until I ran some benchmark tests and monitored the temps. Glad to hear it works, about to spend the rest of the day working on this!

I splurged on Alienware 15R3 3+ years ago (also 7820hk and GTX 1070) and was rather disappointed, the laptop had myriad of issues from day 1 and after fixing them it was still underperforming, overheating being one of the issues. First and last Alienware I ever bought :|
Ayo I need to fix my laptop. It’s an Alienware 15 r3 and it’s like three years old, when I try to play overwatch now the gpu gets to 91 degrees and my cpu gets to like 100. (Celsius) when it hits that temperature it starts to have random framerate drops and makes it too hard to play. I’ve undervolted it, I’ve Turned off turbo boost, and nothing. I don’t have an intact warranty on it I don’t think, will a repaste work?

Wow so you don't need to get the motherboard off to do a repaste? Last time I contacted Dell and they sent a guy here. He took the whole motherboard off to do a repaste. According to this video we just need to unscrew the heatsink and then it is ok. The whole process become much easier , thank you ! I guess 17r4 with 1070 follows the same procedure?
While I can't guarantee that they are the same, I would say they are definitely close. So I wouldn't try to follow the video EXACTLY in your case, but I'd say it's still a useful resource. With the AW17 you need to take out the motherboard, not with the AW15 (or at least not if you do it like in this video and undo the small screws on the fans)
Lol.... my computer crashed while playing Age of Empires so I went to this video to check into my computer reheating. I put on my headset and was like... how did the game automatically start back up???
TIM should be applied as thin as possible, you used way to much. To better repaste, it might help to spread the TIM and remove to overhead befor putting back the headsink. I mad this mistake with my P370EM and got extreme hot temperatures, causing shut downs after 5 minutes of heavy load. After doing a super thin and conservative repaste, temps got much much better. You also didn't follow the numbered pattern for the tightening of the heatsink.
I ended up using the spatula included with the thermal grizzly for the replacement unit and I got much better temps. Video on that soon. (The second I get some free time)
Question. I got a replacement after December 6th and while the temps are tolerable I still want to repaste. The thermal pads no longer need to be replaced then right?
I'm sure there is, but it would more than likely be incredibly difficult (or at least time consuming) and I'm not sure where you'd even get the replacement parts.
The new one I got with the 7820HK stays between 80-90C when all cores are stressed 100%. While gaming with the added heat from the GPU, it went all the way up to 100C, but it somehow managed to stay at 3.9 ghz on all threads. This happened while playing the Wither 3 with GPU load at 100% for 4ish hours and the ambient temps were about 80 in my room. So while it doesn't run ice cold, without repasting and leaving everything just the way it is, it is stable. Also, while idling or doing web browsing, the fans turn off all together and the temps are typically stay below 50.
xXxBo5sANaCxXx Undervolting helps a lot, while the repaste job I did on the 6820HK saw little to no improvement for temperatures. After reading what the forums say, I think it's down to the heatsink just being uneven. I am hesitant to repaste the new one. Interestingly, I saw about a 10% drop in temps with the 1070... so maybe it is worth it anyway.
Brave_SirRobin What about liquid metal? i heard that that paste can lower ur temps by a lot like 20°C... but i saw no proof on HK CPUs only deaktop K ones...im actually little afraid to try it out haha

And even so, if you don't have experience with using electrically conductive paste, I would really just stay away from it. The proper way to do it needs electrical tape going around the die and with the constant expansion and contraction, there is no guarantee that it will stay on. Also, unlike a desktop, the laptop is going to be jostled around which would further encourage the protective tape to move out of place. People have done and continue to do it, but I don't personally, and I would implore you not to either for the sake of preventing an expensive mistake.

I would suggest you reset the BIOS to default setting (press F2 repeatedly on startup) and navigate to the right most tab and reset it. If that doesn't solve your problem, contact support.
I also returned my new AW17 R5 with i9 last week. repasting 3x even with condoctonaut the temps goes to 89C. really disappointed with the new cooling design Cyroblah blah 2.0 bullshit.

I want to replace the thermal pads on my Alienware 15 R3 Repaste (GTX 1060). Does anyone know the dimensions and thickness needed to do so? If I am going through the effort to do a repast, I might as well replace the thermal pads (in my opinion).
Too much hardly matters, too little on the other hands. There are multiple videos on YT that prove this. Too muchjust means you have a lot of past net to the chip die which you need to clean when you chose to repaste again.

Have you tried undervolting? I dropped mine by 110mv and not only gained better temps but also better performance. Just use XTU

I have an R3, which is now just a spare computer in my household. The thing runs its fans at full blast 24/7, so I think it's time for a repaste.

U didn't follow the tightening order on the heatsink. This is crucial to getting a proper spread of paste and contact between the mobo and heatsink.

Ya, my temperatures were only a few degrees cooler than the stock paste, and the core differential still existed.

Yes a repaste will definitely fix the issue

While I was taking the heat sink off I disconnected the WiFi chip cable, how do I fix it.
Alienware has many disassemble videos you should just be able to reattach the cable though

Derek Wang You need to be a little more specific. There are 7 screws on the heatsink. The ones on the CPU are numbered.

No, just reuse the pads that are on there. Just be sure you don't loose any of them during the process, and try not to get anything on them.

Good Day Mate the motherboard has a thick cross section of cast aluminum throughout kinda in an X shape and on the edges, this machine is a fuckin tank bro I have dropped mine many times and nothing at all al lil scuff

I want to replace the thermal pads on my Alienware 15 R3 Repaste (GTX 1060). Does anyone know the dimensions and thickness needed to do so? If I am going through the effort to do a repast, I might as well replace the thermal pads (in my opinion).

Manufacturers do a sloppy job of applying thermal paste. This much paste will actually cause the system to run hot.

You put too much thermal paste. That maybe part of your problem too.
Too much hardly matters, too little on the other hands. There are multiple videos on YT that prove this. Too muchjust means you have a lot of past net to the chip die which you need to clean when you chose to repaste again.
