- At the Fan Media Days in Billund a few months ago, I had the opportunity to see all the details of three LEGO Technic space sets for March 2024. Two designers from the Technic team showed us all the features, details and new parts of the following sets:
42178 Surface Space Loader - €34.99
42180 Mars Exploration Rover - €149.99
42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81 - €99.99

These space sets are probably the biggest surprise lego did in a long time! They returned to the roots in a big way!
Child me would have gone absolutely insane for these. Today's kids are pretty lucky on the toy front.
@@episodenullchild me would want to see these in blue/gray with the old style arrowz and logo. Also with the containers we are just one step away from space police 1...
And they are also NOT that expensive.
This theme brings a lot of advantages and opportunities. You can almost hear the request in the brain storming session. How to make technic more appealing and playable as opposed to display models. The greater incorporation of Lego system as usable features, rather than small add-ons (a chain saw to a forest machine for example) also means they appeal to parent's wallets. All that system stuff they already own can be incorporated instead of abandoned as kids progress into technic. This friendly space exploration stuff is neat, but this theme hopefully will develop in future to all the alien technology that's out there. That could really free the designer's imaginations. Hopefully some of it will be motorised/controllable eventually. Finally, thank goodness they finally addressed the cog offset issue!
It's a straight up continuation of the Ice Planet 2002 series, but for older kids! Well, I say kids, I'm almost 40 and looking forward to it.
The VTOL has an entire control pad on the top using only your thumb is GENIUS! And the collapsible Rover with so much accessories really favors the playability with the set!!! We be swimming in new functions this year!!
Especially since it works left or right handed!
Great video! I'm so happy to see Technic models which emphasise playability rather than just licensing, non-functional aesthetic panels and app gimmicks.
It is absolutely awesome! I have no space left whatsoever, but will have to find a way to convince the missus that we need that spaceship🤣
@@Sjekster you're telling me you don't have any ceiling space left to hang a spaceship?😉
I absolutely love the direction Lego is going with this. Retro/modern space exploration themed sets with no branding royalties to blow costs out of the water. Not only are they a good price, but they have so much thoughtful functionality for young an old alike. These sets really make me feel like I'm a kid back in the early 2000's again and I hope Lego can keep it that way.
The fact that the big vehicle can collapse is really cool. Whole lineup is really unique and gives off a vibe that is really different than other Technic sets - it's more like system with playability for kids in mind than mechanisms for Technic geeks.
They give good old late-90s Technic vibes but with modern parts and and construction techniques added to the mix.
actually this is what technic was used to be.
Is it just me or is this even more epic because the color scheme and vehicles in general are a major throwback to Mars Mission?
Life on Mars too.
The smaller one reminds me a lot of set 7312, even the wheel color.
I love mars mission and these sets were a huge hit for me
That VTOL just keeps getting better and better! Definitely a day 1 buy for me!
ok, these look SOOO much better in person than on the boxes. it's very hard to get a sense of scale from the boxes. they need to do these showcases with ALL technic sets going forward!
I agree, they need to go back to doing the lego technic designer workshop videos. Just with the functionality alone I want to get 2 of the giant cruisers.
This is a massive win. Everyone who grew up with Mars Mission is going to want that technic Dropship.
That VTOL and its functions are awesome
I love these sets. Very innovative part usages, vibrant colours, nice functionality, cool new/redesigned parts. I really hope we get the return of the Artic Technic theme. Thanks for this interesting video!!! 😊
Arctic was my favorite theme after the submarines theme. I'd love to see technic arctic sets
@@Mr.Engine993 Cool.
The Technic team absolutely crushed it! I normally don't pay much attention to majority of Technic sets, but all of these are grabbing my attention. It is interesting they are designed to be interacted with Minifigs - have we ever had that with Technic sets before?
Some sets had the proper scale, but I don't think any of them was specifically designed to fit minifigures
That spaceship is Awesome. I normally dont care about technic, but this might just be the very first technic set im getting
The mixture of system and technic is truly what Lego should be
Absolutely agree. It's the way I've always been building Lego, it just felt right
Speed champions designer interview next please
I would love to do that, believe me, but I'm afraid it won't happen this year
These all look brilliant. Thee 6 wheeled vehicle especially appeals to me, something about the rollcage looking front cockpit looks great to me. I just hope they make more of these, if these were the ONLY space technic sets we get in the future then it will be a shame.
This is just awesome! A perfect mix bluring the lines between Technic and 'regular' LEGO with a load of playability and Technic functions.
I love them, only small hitch is the big rover's cockpit being a different scale to it's hab module, it would have been nice to see minifig chairs in there and fill the extra space with consoles or something.
Tbf, we could probably just look at this cockpit seats as extra big safety seats. Nonetheless, I will be getting all 3 of these and modding them to work with minifigs and pairing them with the rest of the space sets in the other lines
I was curious about that too. Is it supposed to be minifig scale? Or technic fig scale? Odd
This is the coolest set in the history of Lego
Between the VTOL and the Dune ornithopter, I will definitely be doing a lot of swooshing next year!
Wow, the VTOL ship makes me go crazy! I think the designers made a fabulous job, the engines, the “wings” on the back made with rotor blades, the overall shape… But definitely there isn't enough money in my pocket to buy the City space sets + the Technic space sets.
I know right, The VTOL is a must for me but I'm going to try to get the Jet and Cheaper rover from the city line. The space car from dreams also looks good.
I'm glad Ninjago and SW don't have a lot coming out or stuff that I want as I can focus on these.
The return of a system/technic hybrid piece is a very welcome presence.
The hardest choice I see will be which set to get first, as I can only afford one at a time.
These designs are so amazingly sci fi absolutely love it
minifigure scale technic!? it's about time.
I'm really looking forward to picking these up. I think one of the first mods I will make is to enable the VTOL Lifter to carry the Space Loader, then maybe mash two Cargo Spaceships together to make a 4-nacell super lifter for the Rover.
The fact that the Vtol will be able to lift up the small rover will make both a insta buy for me
Building the VTOL now. I know the rover is the most advanced but the handheld feature of the swooshable VTOL takes the cake. So cool.
Finally a video about Space Sets, I've been waiting for this video for a long time and I really appreciate the effort you make to make these magnificent videos!👍👍
These Sci fi space technic sets are unique and awesome
This is awesome. Thanks a lot for sharing the video. To me it's just like if Lego created the sets I dreamed of when I was a child in the 80's. I can't tell how many times I tried to build such vehicles by mixing my technic and space sets. I love all the playable details. Especially the ship 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I'm loving the VTOL, hopefully I can fit a minifigure in there.
These space sets looks awesome! Especially that VTOL!
The VTOL is just AMAZING!!!
definitely gonna get the VTOL space craft that is awsome
As a classic technic builder these sets are not really my thing, but I appreciate that there is something really new in the technic-world. I really like the playing features, refreshing after dozens of cars without real functionality. I'm happy seeing the blue seats returning
I believe this crossover between space and technic sets is a great and smart innovation! I love the design, the functionality and the overall mood.
These are interesting. I like realistic Sci fi! The color choices are also pretty effective
That Drop Ship is a thing of beauty!
I like the noises they make while playing
All of these are cool! My favorite is the VTOL with the ingenius control system, sleek look and multiple moving parts. It almost felt like the Thunderbird 2 in some respects.
The giant foldable rover is super cool with its detailed props and components. I love the sliding function to make it compact.
I love the look and functions of the VTOL. Very cool!
I have been wanting a mixture of technic and system for space for more than 4 years now. Since there were none I was building my own stuff up to now. Glad Lego finally made some sets in that direction, although I would have liked a bit more system than technic AND include some minifigs (I just love minifigs). Anyways these are really cool and I will be looking forward to getting them. Good job!
The vtol looks absolutely amazing
The vtol and the “truck” were really cool. Definitely getting the vtol when it drops😄.
These sets are pretty cool and the disk brakes used on the wheels of the rover look so clean
So excited these technic sets. They also come out around my birthday so gonna start saving up now 😅
Wow they look nice!!!
I never really cared about swooshing around with lego space ships but even as an adult I wanna pick that up and take off and retract the landing gear while seeing the cockpit stay balanced.
Ok the designs are awesome!
The amount of creativity shown in the last set is so impressive! I’m not a technic person, but I genuinely love these new sets. Might buy one of them as my first technic set ever.
Thanks for the reveal! Really digging the "Space" direction LEGO returned back to! That rotating wheel you can access with your thumb from the handle while holding the VTOL, in order to rotate the engines, drop the landing gear and crane is amazing! Also amazing job on the big truck / mobile lab, especially the little details like waste containers, canisters, the arms attachments for the little rover... But the thing which really made me WHOA was when the truck folded back and slided into itself! Really cool mechanism! Well done!
its a very intresting aproach by lego in something new and i love it!
Not personally a fan of the flashy style and would like to see something more NASA-y, but I love how many bits and pieces the big vehicle has plus the fact it can change size.
Brilliant !
Yep. Absolutely love these.
I think the new Technic space sets are amazing! I don't own any Technic sets but I would absolutely start now! They are so functional and cool! Thanks for sharing this video!
I am VERY excited for the VTOL.
I love the 42180 Mars Exploration Rover. I want one.
by far the best technic models released in a long time!
I'm not really into technic, but man, that ship is too damn cool to pass out on
I really like those, especially the big lunar truck thing, having it actually change size was a welcome surprise, it seems well designed.
I love all of these!
I would’ve lost my mind at these when I was a kid. So cool!
Love them and going to by all the sets to complete it❤
The large truck was actually the coolest model.❤️🔥
I’m so hyped for this ngl
These Technic Space sets are on a whole......nother.......level 😮
that new gear open sooo many new mechanism
these look insane. Also I just was talking with my wife, that there aren't many old school playable technic models, but rather display ones or huge expensive builds. These are fantastic.
Impressive designs!
These are awesome! The whole line up just went from, "Those are cool, I'd like to get those sets" to "Holy shiznit, that's awesome! I need to grab those!"
The VTOL is so cool, definitely going to get that one!
Finally a good Lego spaceship
I love that they start mixing system and technic more!
How nice that there is a sphere now! I will need that in my next MOC, the classic Ahrens Fox fire truck😊
I haven't been this excited for new Technic since the surprise BMW reveal two years ago. I wanna get all of these, especially that spaceship!
Love them
This VTOL ship looks amazing.
All of 3 MUST BUY DAY 1 ... I think these are already classics - something we haven't never seen before.
I genuinely haven't had any interest in LEGO Technic in a very long time, but.. For these? Definitely gonna have to grab them!
Wow! Has technic ever done scifi? About time!
im so excited for mechanical sets with features and probably at a reasonable price too!
Sublime.
All these sets are so cool. My excitement for Lego is not fading any time soon. I may not be able to afford them but they'll be cool inspiration regardless
I want a moon buggy like this and with these colours
I've never once wanted a Technic set until I saw the VTOL. It's just DRIPPING with playability and personality! The whole design was built around the swooshability, with the open top and the rear stabilizers being set apart so they don't get in the way of your arm. AI don't typically like the look of Technic, especially with the focus on real-world vehicles. These, however, have a certain charm to them that I wouldn't mind putting on display
I love space set ❤❤❤❤
A surprise... maybe less Technic and more play, but a nice change... More for kids, seems to have high play value. Hopefully they get the prices right this time
I'll be trying to get my hands of the Vtol and maybe the Exploration Rover.
Very interesting
While I'm most excited for the Kawasaki is March these original space themed sets are a real surprise as how unique and innovative all three models are. First off lots of fun playable features. My favorite I think is the V Toll that is fully functional at the same time as swooshable. Absolutely brilliant design. Favorite vehicle is the massive 6x6 Exploration buggy that has plenty of detachable modules, articulated suspension, is detachable and most surprising has been scaled with seating, and living spaces for minifigs outside the theme. If I were to get at least one this looks like it woud be the most fun to build/roll around with.
That new part makes me think of an airlock. Really looking forward to the Big Space Collab that LEGO has created here.
Amazing central control system on the VTOL ship, but considering how heavy the build is gonna be, I think the handle might be rather thin/flat to be comfortable for swishing around.
Grey tires are the selling point, it's about time, I'd like to see other colours too 😁
Mars mission my beloved
very interesting builds, hope they make the bigger one motorized.
I'm going to have to get all of these for me and my son
I like it
Nice to see some actual Technic sets with a lot of functions instead of licensed display pieces. I feel like Lego has been pandering to the adult collector market lately because it makes them a lot more money. Meanwhile the 'play good' company has left their original target audience somewhat neglected.
Yeah, was kinda shocked when the VTOL functions were shown off. that thing feels like it has more mechanical functions than some years entire technic line up.
That new 4 tooth gear is going to be great. The amount of times I’ve needed that…
