One thing we do is wrap a medium chain around the stuck log and use the ram to pull it back off the wedge when its stuck. Go slow in case it starts to slip off. Or a large sledge can pop them off the wedge. Nasty oak and elm up here in ND.
Cherry and Poplar are the 2 most prevalent species in the woods behind my house. Poplar...for a lightweight wood it can be nasty to split, almost no grain to follow. I nibble the easy parts, make kindling, then the branch pieces, or knotty part dries and goes in the fire pit. Nasty stuff!! On the flip side, get a straight piece of poplar, and it's a breeze. I make 1x1 kindling sticks out of it, dries fast, and lights a fire fast. Great video. Todd and 608 just did videos on splitting large rounds, plus this video, shows the less-than-glamorous side of fighting with unruly logs. i try to avoid them, discard them....but...sometimes...it's just a challenge. Man & Machine versus a Nasty Log. WHO will be victorious!????!
I know exactly what you mean with Poplar...sometimes splits like nothing, so easy...then other times it's stringy and splits like a pain in the butt..lol
When you said we would see our favorite firewood professional hobbyist, I was waiting to see who your guest would be lol. Just kidding - as soon as you said BOILER WOOD, I knew it was you. I only saw you launch one piece of bark. Bill
Elm is my all time favorite my Uncle had 5 wedges driven in to one round I brought over my splitter and got them out. any wood will split if you read the grain correctly. thanks Dan
Mornin' brother, that's exactly what the wood is like here. I got a load of encino ( oak ) bout 2 years ago now and i need to get more. Last time it was split by my indigenous helper. It took him quite a while because the wood was all snarly just like the wood you split in the video. one of those 28 pro's sure would get a work out here. Now I got 3 cabins to heat!!! Gotta get the boss on board quick... Stay cool brother, PEACE...
Nice Going Dan for the Best Boiler Wood. I cut some Wood Yesterday now 1day of Rest. I have had Nasty Wood like that and End up having to Chainsaw it up to use ESPECIALLY Locust. That looked like Ash, Maple, Oak, etc. That Wolfridge Splitter Correct me if Wrong its the 37D, is a Fantastic Working Bear. I will try to Join in tomorrow night if I can make it because I am cutting Wood again tomrrow my Friend, but I sure am going to try. Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY. ,
The downside of having the WR up on the platform is that it wants to move around when wrestling big or stuck pieces. Maybe screwing a small block of wood behind and in front of each tire would help keep er planted when you come off the top rope with the crushing elbow drop, on the next stuck piece!👍
Well....hobbyist mistake for the first few mins, I didn't have the rear stabilizer down...lol...once I put that down it helped with the machine not moving around so much. Adding some ropes to form the squared circle would be cool...hahaha
I sometimes chainsaw the unsplitables into blocks that will fit in the wood stove. I use the long sawdust/shavings it makes for chicken nestboxes. Do u use the sawdust?
Hi Dan Well if you're going to find Out 🤠 How Much a Machine Take it Might be A Wolfe Ridge Actually i Was very impressed with the Way it Handled i think the Best Way to Split the Narlly Peaces is Take Little Chunks Off At a Time
Yeah thought since it was gonna be for the boiler a split in half and then once more would work instead of smaller slits off the side...luckily I was still able to get it split up.
For the first time I discover the similarities between a professional hobbyist and his firewood! 😇😇😇
Nasty boiler wood!! But the Wolfe Ridge came thru!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day

Just imagine if you didn't have the wolf ridge and had to use a home depot or tsc splitter like us normal folk..glacier speed
I've got a countyline 35 ton that does great, haven't found anything it won't split yet. Craigslist $900
@tyharland1906 congratulations..
I think a few of those chunks would've been tossed back in the ditch if I didn't have this splitter...haha

Hey when you get to where you're stacking the wood tip your bucket forward so the pieces will slide out easier!
No doubt that the Wolfe Ridge would come through, it's one beast of a machine!
I have only ran into a few chunks the Wolfe ridge 28c did not like . So in the Valley it went . The bugs got to eat to
Lol

Hahahahaha....no guest hobbyists around here!

Dan that’s some mucking fugly wood😂👍🇺🇸
Ha...yes it sure was! Glad you switched those letters or this may have ended up in the Held for Review...lol
WolfRidge is a beast. Stay safe.
I enjoyed your efforts with the snarly wood, but it makes great boiler wood once aged out!

Yeah for snarly stuff like this hydraulics sure come in handy...lol...wow, with 3 cabins you're gonna have to really start wood hounding!
Good demonstration on the power. 😉👍

This Wolfe Ridge is the 28C, the 37D is the Eastonmade (orange & blue) machine.
Sometimes no matter how much you split a chunk it will never look like a stick of firewood.
hi there good splitting best to all john
Snarly for sure!😂👍👍

You can butt ram up to a stuck piece wrap chain around farside of stuck round wrap/hook chain to ram then retract ram to pull it off.
Yep I've actually used that trick before...works great.
I am thinking a SNARLY tee shirt is warranted

I think that snarly piece puts about an extra 1000 pieces of wear on a machine. Ive gotten beam and push plate warping due to pieces like that
Yeah when I noticed a little flex in the wedge I knew I wasn't gonna keep trying to force it through. Pull it off and adjust and try again.
hey dan .. ya nasty wood is a bitch to split ..keep up the good vids ..hey from canada
Good job struggling through those nasty rounds 👍
