That's GDAD tuning but down a whole step. If you raise that High C up to a D now you're in Cajun Tuning.

    Cool sound!

Amazing sound! Easily my favourite string instrument now (or maybe second to the banjo - that choice is a toughie)
Gotta ask: how is it that you do multitracks without using headphones/earbuds?

Thanks Theo. We cheat and we record the audio and the video separately. We play along to studio recorded audio and lip-sync so we don't have to worry about the terrible acoustics in our living room.

Huh. Now I'm really wondering if people like Scott Sutherland & Trent Hamilton ever do that
I won't lie, all the syncing in this series is spot-on. I never would've guessed you did that if you didn't say it

The guy on the right is by far the better player!
Who do you think is the better one?

You do tune it differently than a cello/mandocello by a whole fourth! Almost bouzouki/octave mandolin tuning but down a step. A mandocello is much deeper. Are you sure this is a mandocello and not an octave mandolin? What kind of strings you use? Mandocello strings would break at that tension. I bet you are using bouzouki strings.

I'm pretty sure it's a mandocello as it was custom-built as one by a very well-established maker. Scale length is 640mm, but I use .012 x2, 0.22w x2, .015, .035, .024, .045. to achieve my tuning - which as you say is Irish bouzoukis but down by a tone. But it would be perfectly possible to put a set of mandocello strings on it and tune it aa-DD-GG-CC - it's just that this tuning works better for me.

I have a custom set with Strings Direct - www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/string-sets-c865/custom-gauge-sets-c889/mandolin-banjo-c893/elixir-nanoweb-phosphor-bronze-chris-green-mandocello-custom-set-p12827

I think the correct name is 'Mandoloncello'... 'Mandocello' does mean nothing in italian. Cheers! :)

1:50 Playing and Irish tune is more than align a lot of quavers in perfect order and timing. You are missing an important point. This melody is a jig with a time signature of 6/8 organized in 2 groups of 3 numbered 1 to 6. The accents are on 1 and 4 and the syncopation on 3 and 6.
If you are able to put an accent on down or up, you can keep your alternate way with the pick DUDUDU. But a more natural way on jigs is to play DUDDUD.

This is fantastic, harmonizing them is such a lovely sound.
I’m from the states but have family roots out of Scotland & Asia. I got to spend five years in northern Scotland when my dad was in the Navy, I have such fond memories of the whole of the UK. I want to go back.
I never knew a Mandocello even existed, I want one.
What a beautiful sound and you play it so well, right on mate, Thanks❗️🤗🙃

Wow, beautiful played. It‘s not easy to set irish music to a mandolin instrument so that it sounds authentic.
    Well done.

Rob Armstrong of Coventry. I’m afraid he doesn’t have a website…

He is pretty much retired now, but if you can get in touch with him, he has a large collection of instruments which he is selling off.

Could you provide a link or share how you string up for octaves on the 2 lower strings? I cant seem to find a set of strings like that and Id really like to try it. Thanks

Certainly! This is the set I have saved with Strings Direct - www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/string-sets-c865/custom-gauge-sets-c889/mandolin-banjo-c893/elixir-nanoweb-phosphor-bronze-chris-green-mandocello-custom-set-p12827

@@philipjeffreymusic5622 I have a very similar instrument, by the same maker, and I use Newtone Strings. Google them. They are hand made in Matlock, Derbyshire, and outperform and outlast anything I've used before. Rob Armstrong himself told me to use them. They do mandocello sets. They will also make sets up to your spec. They are only available via their website.
