And I’m 69 years old and I couldn’t hold back the emotion and tears that fell like rain. I remember when my father past and left us. This song is so vivid as a memory of the words in my head. It all comes back. There is a time to laugh and a time to cry.

You hit the nail on the head... James Blunt ticks so many boxes, but people ignore that... He is a mans man. He was a Captain in the British Army for six years with hardcore combat experience... he is also capable of showing emotion and vulnerability (which you shouldn't do as an Army Officer).... he's a bloody legend and should always be regarded as such.

My fiancé can't understand why I keep listening to this song even though it makes me cry. I can't get her to understand that it actually makes me feel better... I didn't grow up with a father, but I AM a father of four. 2 boys 2 girls. The girls came first, are grown and out the house now. Now it's just me and my boys at home. Their mom, my wife, passed away about 5 years ago. Watching them grow... man!! My oldest son just celebrated his 16th birthday yesterday. I bought him an old truck.. (He thinks he's a man now... lol) These types of moments that I didn't have...that I get to give to them... Man... I cry in the BEST possible way when I listen to this song... EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!!

For many of us and I believe for many Brits... the showing of emotions is not something "men" are supposed to do and our father's were this way. I believe this is what we are seeing in this video. James father is one of those men who just do not feel appropriate showing their vulnerability, even when their child is doing so. Don't interpret that as him not having emotion, it's there.. it's just hidden behind their wall or shield of masculinity.

It’s actually a father still being strong for his child even at the moment of death. A true parent knows how to sacrifice at all costs.

Breaks me up every time I listen to this. Lost my father during Covid lockdown - hits me quite personally. British, posh military family. Not known for their emotional vulnerability or public displays of affection. The words, "just two grown men saying goodbye" were said by the military father seeing his military son off to active service and danger. Stiff upper lip and all that. And the son sings it back to the father - but this song is about what is behind the façade - still love you, daddy,, go to sleep and don't afraid and go to sleep, and my turn to chase the monsters away. Raw and emotional. The fathers attitude was "why is everybody crying? I'm not dead yet!". Yep.

But inasmuch much as James emotes here, I was as deeply moved by the very real reaction in yer countenance, especially yer eyes. I'm tryin to say (but not very well, I fear) that yer response was a double blessing, along with James and his Da. I cannae thank ye enough, wee Sabina.

You are an empath, that is why you fell this so intensely. I am too, so two years after you made this I feel how this touched you. And in posting this two years ago, your response gave an old fool a chance to feel a pain I did not allow myself to feel when my dad died(15 years ago). He was violent in the extreme when I was growing up and it forces us(my brothers and me) to hide our emotions. Showing emotions made the violence worse. So when I first encountered this song a couple of months ago it hit hard. I have found that by watching reaction videos it helps me feel, so thank you.

The human experience is not complete until “the time is gone.” And it is a universal that loss will occur, a parent, a child, a spouse. James brilliantly calls to our inner soul and reminds us of what truly matters in our oh too temporary existence. Love one another. Always.

Hello, beautiful Sabina. Thank you for sharing yourself with us on TH-cam. I lost my dad when I was 6. It took me at least 30 years to realize how that really impacted me. Yes, that is his real dad. But what I now realize is our fathers see and understand life from a different perspective. They don't cry because they don't want us to feel this bad about it. They want us to go live our lives and enjoy our own highlights like they enjoyed theirs. His father isn't sad because he knows better and wishes better for his kid.

Hello Sabina - I am also knitted like you - however, I am now 70 years old, have experienced some shit and, when I saw you crying, I cried with you.
We are not ashamed to show our tears, they are an expression of sympathy and quite all right.
In 1967/68 I was in love with a girl, in our disco, where I got to hear "Black Music" for the very first time. several titles are still so close to me today that I ALWAYS cry when I listen to them. Nothing happened with the girl, but the music that remains (Marvin Gaye "I heard Through The Grapevine", Gary Brooker and Procol Harum with "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and The Moody Blues "Night in White Satin").
AND I am a Tamla Motown fan to this day!

Ty for your reaction. It has been several years since I lost my father. Even longer that my mother passed. I was in the hospital room with my dad when Mom passed. I miss them both everyday. All of us that have experienced this can only urge those that havent to enjoy the time you are allotted in life with family and loved ones to the fullest. Never hesitate to let them know that you love them. Not even one more second is guaranteed. Very brave song and touching. Luckily for his father a donor match was found in time but I'm sure this song helped open some doors in their relationship. Both James and his father have a military background and I've read they hadnt been very emotionally open with one another. I'm glad for them both that time wasnt as short as they had feared. Hugs.

Its because his father Charles Blount was a high ranking Colonel in the British army, don't show feelings or weakness. When this was filmed he was the only one not crying, he said I'm still here.
The last verse is the most heartbreaking, he's telling his father he'll be with him till his last breath and to not be afraid.
Its my turn to chase the monsters away I think is the fear of death, the unknown and leaving loved ones and this planet...
Well done, I still cry now, its something we've all got to face in life.
When James wrote it and this filmed there really was no hope, he and his siblings weren't a match, he was on the Kidney donor list but really no chance.
    Well done again.
You're like millions of other lovely people, too sensitive, a very good trait ❤
Good news is he received a kidney from a distant cousin, a live donor, and is still alive

The last time my dad talked to me he was angry with me. He had a heart attack that night. I always feel so sad that I never got a chance to say goodbye.

I lost my father in 2022 and mother 2007. Both after long illnesses. Neither were quick. I find this song very cathartic. It helps me remember my dad and keeps my life in perspective.

Have watched several reactions to this video, yours was the most rawest and truest reaction.Thankyou for not pausing the video constantly like others do to start talking. That spoils the reaction. Your on screen talk was 100% better. Keep up the good reactions. ❤️

I just heard his song today and really hit me hard. Twenty years ago, I lost my mother from brain cancer, and I never grieved when she passed. Because by the end, I just wanted the suffering for her to be over. My relationship with my father before my mother's death wasn't that good. But as time went on, we got along well that by then I considered him a great father and best friend. 6 years ago he had a really bad heart attack and the doctor gave him a year at best because the arteries were really bad. I didn't waste time that day I told my dad I loved him very much and was proud to ve his son. An hour after they told us the bad news, he suffered a second attack and he passed away. I was never able to grieve his passing at the time because of having to deal with the financial situation dealing with this. And Covid hit, and that made things worse. I finally started having a breakdown and my job helped me get a therapist. The doctor told me that I have gone through alot that situations out of my control robbed me of the chance to properly mourn his passing. She said to allow myself feel the emotions and to accept my emotions as it's happening to me. I've been doing that the last week and would cry a little bit. But then I heard this song earlier today. And it really struck me hard because it made me feel everything I was feeling. So much that was left unsaid between me and my father he was saying in this song. It's a beautiful song and I definitely agree that it's a healing song for people who lost a loved one. Because for the first time in years this huge emotional weight that has been crushing me not feel so heavy right now. Never thought a song could be so effective as this.

A distant cousin saw the video, got tested and was a match for his father, if not for the video he would never tested, but most importantly regardless how far removed family is we should always try to keep in contact.

The distant relative, also named Charles Blount (Blunt is James’ stage spelling), like his father, really was distant - he lived in Australia.

I lost my mother last year and I am very glad that we have been very close for the past six months. It was difficult and painful, but we were able to say goodbye with great love and peace. Of course, this experience makes me feel this song in a completely different way. That goes pretty deep.
Mom's last words to me were that she loves me and that she apologizes for not being able to say anything comforting. I told her she was a great mom and I was all grown up now and she didn't have to worry about me. She may go in peace. I will never forget Mother's smile at my words.

@sabina James Blounts dad donated a kidney. Then his only kidney failed and he was going to die. James wrote this song and played it for his dad. When released a family member(UK OR AUSTRALIA) heard it and got tested to see if he was a match. HE WAS. That is is father in the video while at the hospital. He got the transplant and is doing great.

This song gave me a whole new level of respect for JB to allow oneselfs vulnerability to be on display in this age of social media is a brave thing indeed. It's a song that needs to be sung and will at some point be relevant to every human on this planet... Dad's call your sons and Sons call your Fathers... before "The time has passed"

The last thing my Father asked me for in the hospice where he lay seeing out his last days was a haircut. I had never cut anyone's hair in my life, however, he was adamant he didn't want to look messy when his time, soon to be, came. So I did my best, and we laughed our heads off at the unevenness of it all, and as I trimmed it up, we feel into the most comfortable of silences, content in the moment. He passed three days later. That haircut was the very best of goodbyes, I'm glad we got to share something so intimately, figuratively and personally, but most importantly that our farewell, was us in hysterics. Miss you Dad.
