I’m turning 50 in a couple of weeks and only started CrossFit 2.5 years ago. I just did my first open and came 65th in the quarterfinals. I have gained significant strength and mobility and learnt almost all the movements. Age does not mean you have to deteriorate 💪 but yes you need to work harder on recovery and living healthy

Thanks guys, you really put everything into perspective for me. As much as i hate to admit it, i just can't hang with some of the younger guys at my gym even though they've been in the sport for much shorter than i have. So i'm spending much more time refining movement mechanics and mobility now than chasing strength PRs. 40 now and i'm still improving in all areas of my fitness. Been in the DSGN for a few months now and i'm feeling great!

I won the open (45-49) last year and although COVID ruined 2020 I was better than ever in 10 years of CrossFit.
Your discussion was really positive it would be nice to distinguish between competitive masters athletes and everyone else - those protocols are massively different

Just saw this now, loved this video. I am 50 started lifting when i was 44, have done crossfit as well and still do but more as a functional type fitness program...not competing or anything but have definitely noticed difference even than a few years ago. This discussion helps me realize what I am finding within my own training is 'normal' and helps me rethink some of my approaches. My main goal now is fitness and health and longevity :)

I’m only 39 and y’all have me feeling old 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m less than a year in and only have three more movements to learn. Butterfly, handstand walk and pistols are definitely taking longer to get

As an older athlete (56yrs) I feel sometimes we need saving from ourselves, BUT coaches and competitions do not necessarily encourage it.
I believe every box should as a matter of routine whiteboard Male/Female RX AND 55+ RX, then scale from there.
Lower level local competitions should practice the same approach if there are no age specific categories.
I have ruined myself too many times trying to RX even though I know the workout is not aimed at a 55+ its aimed at 20+.
I really want to compete against the youngsters its good for them and me, but we need CrossFit to make it easy by setting the example and some very simple guidelines to affiliates.
Having discussed these ideas with many older athletes, there is a broad agreement these very easy steps would keep them engaged and definitely increase participation in competition. What are your thoughts?

You mention master athletes needing to think differently about their warmup. Can you either discuss this or direct us to some content about this? I know more warmup is good, but I'd also like to warmup smarter.

I don't try to overthink it > I keep it real simple & uncomplicated > I go for a jog / into a run >1/2 mile to mile, respiration, perspiration heart rate, and moderate discomfort & presto I'm loose and warmed up, basically go straight into workout whether its strength or metcon

Takes my joints a week to recover from too much Double Unders training....and im only 32. I practiced last weekend for two hours and for the next 5 days had...
    -Shin Splints
    -Knee Pain
    -lower back soreness
    -Ankle tightness
Granted I sit at a desk all day for work, but I think I am ready to be a Masters Athlete LOL

Basically nobody else than a crossfit athlete would think about doing jump rope for 2 hours. I think its totally normal to be destroyed by that amount at any age. 2h is like a half marathon. For me double under training feels harder than running.
