Eric Marienthal has such a great sound and so much comfort on the instrument. The reason for his smoothness is really because he is so much master of the saxophone, and not for trying to force smoothness, if you know what I mean. Always loved his "grandpa" old school tenor sound by the way, which is quite a bit more laid back and cozy than his amazing alto playing. Stop saying “underrated.” This guy is one of the most successful saxophonists of the 20th & 21st centuries. You people think Jesus Christ, Al Pacino & Babe Ruth are all “underrated” - enough already. Use your brain and stop repeating words just because you hear other people use them.
Eric Marienthal is highly highly underrated amongst jazz saxophone players, and is quite often swept under the rug and overlooked. But him, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Everette Harp and Andy Snitzer are the contemporary guys who have some jaw dropping chops. Eric got that gig with Chick Corea right out of Berklee, when he was around 21. He had it together at 21. That is insane.
I met eric once right after a performance in las cruces, new Mexico and I literally played his licks at home afterwards. And let me tell you it does make you feel badass.
Eric has one of the sweetest solos I ever heard from any saxophonist. Being a Jeff Lorber fan, I’ve heard Marienthal ALOT and his takes are just unbelievable.
Marienthal was always No.1 melodical, the smoothest sounding saxophonist ever! have met with him after gig! Very humble guy .... still my No.1 player on this instrument since 1999 (at the age of 15 i discovered whole Electric Band 1987 live concert )
Damn! I've always loved Eric Marienthal's playing. And I know how much of a monster he is. I saw him live back in the day with Chick Corea's Elektric Band when they first started and he was smokin'! But this cut with him in tenor! Damn! What a great sound! He sounds like a tenor player - not an alto player playing tenor. Bright, tight, and edgy. Ugh!
Saw marienthal play at mineral area college last year for a jazz camp. Probably the best performance I’ve ever seen. He played giant steps and a few other songs.
I first learnt about him through exactly this Overtime live years ago when my bro bought this DVD. This DVD also happened to be my gateway drug to jazz. At first I thought he was JUST a great smooth jazz player...But only a couple years later I saw he was in Chick Corea's Elektric Band and I was like "ah ohhh"...He can pretty much play anything GREAT.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist and am teaching myself sax. When guys hit those As an octave above the first ledger line above the staff, is that overtone work? I've always called it altissimo but I haven't seen special fingering charts for notes that are that low.
Sorry, meant to do that but with a 3 year old, plans can have a sudden chance :) I'm pinning it in the first comment and description too th-cam.com/video/kmsmtF9wMjc/w-d-xo.html
I appreciate this on a technical level, but it does nothing for me on an emotional one. What emotion is this supposed to ellicit? Hotel lobby? Elevator? Being on hold after calling the insurance company?
it's more of a "yes! keep going!" mood. it goes there. it sounds good, and you begin floating on the melody. the melody is good, it resonates with me. it's like the saxophone is singing, without even being English. atleast that's what it means to me. it's so nice, it transcends the generic music you'd hear at any of the places you just mentioned.
At least you're willing to admit that this is SMOOTH JAZZ. Eric Marienthal has received so much for praise for how great he is at "jazz," when in reality he's simply a glorified smooth jazz saxophonist. Whatever style he wants to play I don't care about, but he's not really a great jazz saxophonist.

Marenthal is so underrated amongst the populi. Anyone with an ear knows this guy is the real deal. And, he’s working with one of Lee’s best songs.
I don't think he is underrated. People know he kicks ass.
@@MikeSmith-go8wk if you know the work, you know Marienthal kicks ass. But he’s never been in front of the band stand kind of guy.
He’s known as one of the best and constantly in demand sax players of all time. That is appropriately rated

That camouflaged lick around 1:04 xD

I mean.......he studied under Warne Marsh in HIGH SCHOOL!
@@zacchaeuswilson6116 Doesn't surpise me in the least. I also think he was one of the last students Joe Viola took on at Berklee before he retired.
Check out his playing on Dave Weckls Master Plan record. Such an incredible record

Marienthal is an ANIMAL on any Sax!!!
Eric has one of the sweetest solos I ever heard from any saxophonist. Being a Jeff Lorber fan, I’ve heard Marienthal ALOT and his takes are just unbelievable.
It’s great to behold Eric Marienthal on Tenor. Such a rare sight 🥰
Marienthal is one of the very best.
Yes!! I am so glad someone finally transcribed this. This has been one of my favorite Eric solos for years. So effortless and melodic!

What a tone he has. So warm, so perfect.
Great transcription and a fab solo by Eric. Thanks for posting.
Of course Lee Ritenour is here. Listen to this! Sick transcription btw
Eric on tenor…. 😍😍😍. Don’t see it that much.
That was so smooth, my mind slipped and hit its head on the floor.
One of my all-time favorite tracks.

I really enjoyed hearing Eric play tenor on this cut. Really nice solo! He should consider playing more tenor.
Smooth as silk!
Buttery 🧈
Eric is amazing on so many levels!
Whoa, what a great vibe
didnt know mel gibson can play a mean tenor saxophone 😂😂

yeah - groovy!!!!!
Cool, please make Lee's transcriptions too 🎉❤
I know he composed some of the tracks for the game The Sims 1, there is a track called "Neighborhood 6" I really like
Up with the greats
Amazing job man! Thanks so much and yeah Erik is a Superhero on the saxophone
Good to see things worked out for Pryzbylewski after teaching high school
dude...this drummer....
Oscar Seaton Jr.! He’s a beast. Did some work with George Benson in the early 2010s. Such a fantastic drummer
❤❤❤❤❤
I didn't know that Eric also played the tenor saxophone.😲
In my opinion, Eric has a unique and most recognizable sound on each of his sax.
Is that soprano, alto and tenor sax.
I'm a multi-instrumentalist and am teaching myself sax. When guys hit those As an octave above the first ledger line above the staff, is that overtone work? I've always called it altissimo but I haven't seen special fingering charts for notes that are that low.
Man,
Eric likely makes some smooth $$$, uses $1 neck strap! 🎉🎉
It looks like one of those lanyards you get for free at a conference!
Yeah, but he has build quite a muscular neck there, it just hurts the neckstrap
He is well built, no joke! The Hasselhof of sax!
For years, he used the neck strap that would come with Yamahas.
Now he has upgraded to the Marmadukes.
Would love a link to the original video.

Who is on bass and drums?
It's such a cringy term smooth jazz. This guy is killing it. He's not taking all the claws out of it like smooth jazz does.
Anyone heard the lick? 😃
This guy gets ALL the 🐱 in the world...
He may be as great as Michael Brecker
