  • This footage of a heavy cargo drop followed by Airborne Soldiers jumping at the Deadhorse drop zone for Arctic Pegasus 2014. This mobility exercise enables the military to build proficiency in Arctic Airborne operations in extreme cold-weather conditions. Arctic Pegasus 2014 is a Joint-Interagency Military training exercise held above the Arctic Circle, with a goal to enhance U.S. Army Alaska's mobility and operability in arctic conditions.

    Been on a few of these drops in a C-130 with Special Forces just inside the Arctic Circle in Norway back in late 60s. Those were some fun days.

    This brings back memories. I went to Northern warfare training center in fort greely Alaska. Those vehicles are called anfibious susves. They were put out first on the heavy drop. Then we jumped out with Snowshoes, and weapons. That was over 40 years ago. Time flies.

      Do you remember how many men died ? They had one in 1955 and the planes started going down in the USA, across Canada and finally in Alaska.

      Same, Cold weather training in Vicenza Italy; jumping into Asiago with 1/509th Inf. ( airborne) S.E.T.A,F. Over 40+ Anni, although it was tailgating from a CH- 47 Chinook

    The hardest part about jumping out of a perfectly good airplane is the 6 hour wait with no bathroom break before the flight.

    Jumping out of a C-5 Galaxy felt like 2 opening shocks at the same time! Did it once; not bad, but I'll keep my good old C-130 jumps!

      Best damn cold weather boots I've ever worn. We called them Mickey Mouse boots. I was at Ft. Rich for a spell back in the early 90's. A bit warmer climate than Ft. W.

      @@willie_mccoy yep, used the black mickey mouse boots in Korea. the white ones we used at Fort Wainwright, Alaska and can remember some newbie always forgets to open the valve in the boots, otherwise they have a BLOW OUT at altitude!

    52 and retired paratrooper. When the crew chief opened the sidedoor my nuts shriveled from the cold just watching. Proud to have been a trooper but my body hurts. ABN and ATW.

    I remember the C130 jumps, if you didn't have a strong exit, you would hit the side of the plane, I have heard many people bouncing off the side. Kinda hilarious, in jump school they told you many times, do a strong jump, or you will pay. How can I forget the 34ft tower. Jumping over and over until you did it perfect. Ahh the memories!

    The look from the guy at 3:00 is CLASSIC!! “GET ME OFF OF THIS FUCKING AIRCRAFT!!” This was some GREAT editing. Anyone that’s DONE this knows that they went HOURS without going to the bathroom, doing an in-flight rig (because they entered the A/C WITHOUT their gear on), getting JMPI’d, waiting for the equipment to go out and THEN you get to jump and getting the 100+ pounds off of your back and legs!!

      That"s what Huggies are for. If you've ever been on a C-130 for 6 hours taking off from Pope, making a loop around Cuba and predawn jumping on Holland DZ, you know what I mean.

      I first heard about the C-17 when Reagan was in office, and the way he built our military he and Weinberger and I can't remember the other guy but anyway he gave us the right combination of aircraft tanks everything we got the F-16 out of it the Abrams tank Airline battle 2000

    While working for the federal government, I met a soldier in uniform. We started talking and he said he was leaving for winter training. I asked where in Alaska he was going. He said he was not going to Alaska, he was going to Camp Drum in New York State.

      My guess as it says it was practice and they were probably jumping here in the US. Maybe Fort Drum. If you look, 2 "jumpers" didn't have any gear on at all and were dressed for warm temperatures.

      Once you exit the bird your back is to the wind, and with the adrenaline you don't feel the cold until you hit the ground. Its a good time

    Joined the NAVY in May 67 thinking I wouldn’t have to go to Vietnam. Didn’t know about the river patrol boats. Luckily, I was sent to Beeville Texas to be a librarian. My next assignment was to a Nuclear Weapons Submarine tender in Charleston S.C. My tour of duty was three years having only one week actually at sea. We went to San Juan PR to do a repair. Not being important, I took a weeks liberty a flew to St Croix to see my family. One night we went to the drive in and watched the movie PATTEN. The NAVY was good to me.

      No idea what it’s like now but back in the ‘60’s when stationed in Alaska they expected soldiers to SKI with those Damn boots ! They kept your toes from Freezing but had virtually Zero traction on any type of snow. Hard to believe they’re using (Mickey) “Mouse” (VB) boots still today ! (Given the appearance and sole tread, etc.)

      High Altitude is 3,500 ft. Static jumps are usually 1150 - 1200 ft on a clear day .

      You mean 95? The C-17 didn't come out until the early 90's. In 75 , there was only the C-5, C-130, and the C-141.
