  • I take you on a short tour of Rhyl promenade and town centre. I was returning from a trip to the Isle of Anglesey and thought I'd stop by in the North Wales seaside town as it was just a little detour for me on the way back.

Its sad to say this but most of our seaside towns have been slowly crumbling for decades through under investment from government.
Its been twenty years since I visited the town and I don't think I will return any time soon.
I'd much rather go to the main honey-pots in Snowdonia or even Aberystwyth prom and pier. 😀

It is all over the country. In the past forty years of travelling I have come to see wreck after wreck of places that once were amazing to visit, that in the hands of doped up councillors, that is all I can think of their mentality, all is ruined

Rhyl was a fantastic place to be before circa 1995. I remember some great weekends there in the 80s and early 90s. Fantastic pubs, clubs, restaurants, arcades and would you believe, I once stayed in a very posh hotel in 1984! I think the decline started when the government at the time allowed the DSS to use B&B accommodation when there was a lack of social housing. Suddenly every man and his dog realised they could move to the seaside, stay in B&Bs and the DSS would pay housing benefit. So a win-win situation, the B&B owners get a regular income, the DSS guest gets bed and breakfast 365 days of the year at the seaside, but that only attracted the transient, so instead of holiday makers with cash to spend, these seaside resorts slowly turned into towns with a population on welfare and no spare cash to spend.

Allowing certain slum landlords to advertise flats for rent in prisons didn't help either.

Hi Stephen, we used to take the kids to Rhyl late 70s early 80s it wasn't too bad then. My parents also took me and my late brother there too, had some great holidays there in the 60s. The old building there knocking down was once the Queens Hotel had live entertainment on years ago and was a quite nice place, big hotel too. The other old building that's B&M Bargains was Woolworths. Thanks for some good memories, I think I'd give it a swerve now.👍

Rhyl was nice to go to in the late 50s and 60, today it's a shit hole, plus it's been ring fenced,ie people come out of prison and put into Rhyl so they know where they are, I avoid the place like the black death ☠️ and Iive In prestayn , only 4 mies away!!

Hubby and I watch all your content about Blackpool (thank you so much for all you do.) We both grew up in Rhyl, moved away eleven years back. The town clock is leaning but was made safe, took them an age to finish. Our son and family still live there (not in the clock) 😂 The telephone exchange looked that bad even when it was used! The new police station is outside St Asaph. The sky tower was from the Glasgow Garden Festival, we used to think it was amazing. The fun fair was at the end of the prom and closed when we were there, it’s now a small retail park. Lots to tell you if you need more info.

Rhyl is not the seaside town it was, but it has improved to what it became in the 90's and 00's. It is a shadow of it's former self. I Loved my Rhyl holidays in the very early 80's as a child.

The councils for lots of seaside places need to be answerable for their actions and what we now see before us.Money minded councils for themselves and not the public sadly.I came to rhyl as a child and its deterioration is beyond belief.Thankyou for this video you are doing some really great interesting ones.

I lived in Rhyl in the early 80's. I know some of it is run down but I still visit and have a love for the place. The B& M building used to be Woolworths. I remember Don Estelle singing there while he sold his music cassettes. Nice video. Thanks for your work.

Sadly Blackpool has deteriorated, not a place I would even consider for a weekend break. I remember Rhyl from the sixties and early seventies, we stayed on the caravan park in Towyn, it was so lovely then, the outdoor lido, the tower clock on the roundabout was sat in the beautifully landscaped promenade. I’ll never understand how places like this get so bad, have we completely lost all sense of civic pride. I live in Wigan and that’s gone to the dogs.

I used to live in Rhyl when it was a lot of fun in the 1980s and a had a Saturday job at Woolworths, and after work off I went to enjoy the trampolines and Fun House at the old school funfair in my grey stockingfeet, ride the Mouse, Catterpillar, Dive Bomber, Dodgems, Big Dipper and many more amusements. Also swam in the Sun Centre sadly no longer here.

Rhyl used to be a gret place in the 60s/70s, but it has deteriated since then, I called in last year, whilst we were staying in Llandudno, which is a beautiful seaside resort, the beat in Wales, because the Mostyn Estates whot own Llandudno, makes sure that the buildings are kept pristeen and have a strict planning programme for any new buildings, to blend it with the ret of the achetecture.
I doubt Rhyl will ever get back to what it used to be, as it is so run down., it is too run down and developers wont invest in the place, because the lack of counil and government funding.

Right back in 79/80 they built a Monorail Train track, from one end of the prom by Splash point
all the way up to the Harbour, with a Station, opposite the Clock tower, on the Prom, all of this 30ft up in the Air?
It was Only Open for a Year or Two, and then closed, after spending £m on it, took 5yrs, to demolish it, we used to go into the
Station, via a Stairs set, still Accessible, to climb up, Blue, Red, Green windows, all around the Station, concrete Pillars
Holding up the tracks, all the way up the Prom

Queens arcade which is the buildings you showed being knocked down, used to be similar to the base of the Blackpool tower. Amazing ballroom, and also had had a Venice style river running in the basement that visitors could ride through on boats. Sadly Rhyl has seen better days, and I do feel the investment may be a case of "too little, too late", as it's reputation will have put generations of people off visiting again.

The Town Hall clock does lean, i remember as a kid in about 1980 it was a "thing" in the local press but apart from being sandblasted clean i don't think anything was done. The road on which it stands is Wellington Rd, Russell Rd is further out. Like most GB seaside resorts Rhyl has seen better days & cheap flights to sunnier climes hasn't helped. It's an ok place to live.

In the 1970's Rhyl had 3 theatres on the promenade. Absolutely bustling place. Sadly forign holidays led to the decline. The first building that you looked at with the B & M store was a Woolworth's 2 storey shop. The tower has been closed for a good 10 yrs and was going to be demolished until a petition kept it. It now lights up of a night in different colours. The building site was arcades with planning permission for town houses ro be erected.

Enjoyed that and could see lovely hills in back drop, but never ever had vacations in Rhyl. As for Rhyl only drove through or nearby to pass it. Some resorts change, or they get new ideas which don’t workout, maybe a lot unemployment, I’ve totally no idea, but very sad for those who may remember how it once was, and now a shadow of its former self. Takecare. Di. Xx

  • @kdri155

Shame I didn't see you whilst whilst you had a flying visit.
A little background info, like many seaside towns up and down the country including your home town to which I'm a regular visitor, Rhyl has lacked investment and forward planning from local government and property/business owners some of whom have just left property fall into disreepair, The building on the prom currently being demolished was the Queens hotel, market, amusement arcade and other associated businesses.
It will be replaced by a modern indoor market area, affordable apartments with retail units below, a new library, outdoor bistro style eateries etc.
The SC2 is an indoor and outdoor family splash centre with bistro cafes and bars as well as a tag activity centre, the arcades all provide hours of fun and as for the beaches, what can I say stunning with acres of free space to enjoy a fun family day out.
Much of the promenade has seen huge investment recently, for instance we have an outstanding kite surf school with an excellent restaraunt, pizzeria and bar, next to the Pavillion theatre is the 1891 restaurant and bar, at the other end of the promenade we have the harbour with the feature of the Pont Y Draig bridge across the Estuary, again an excellent cafe in the way Hub and cycle hire.
Our local council and housing associations have been compulsory purchasing many hmo's and converting them to family homes and apartments rather than multiple bedsits in one propert, this in turn has improved many areas of the town.
People still come to the are in the thousands each year so the town must be doing something right and have an appeal, yes it may look a little unloved back from the prom but so do Blackpool, Mablethorpe, Skegness etc but hopefully with investment and funding all our towns will see an improvement.
    Thanks for visiting.

I 10000% agree, what is this slag off Rhyl month,? I live in Rhyl and noone EVER says about the love, friendship and sense of community of people that live here, only concentrating on the bad and it pisses me right off. Why do people always have to come and try to pull it down? Is it jealously because we are developing ourselves with the council knocking down the old, repairing and improving with new? I am sick to death of the media and everyman with a mobile and dog slagging off my home town. LEAVE US ALONE AND GO concentrate on ur OWN crappy town or the Welsh/Scottish/Uk goverment if ur unhappy, bored or whatever!!!

Lets hope the seaside towns return to their former glory. Too much has been spent abroad. Covid has put paid to foreign holidays at the moment so hopefully some investment in these towns will be welcome.

Last time I went there was about 3 or 4 years ago. It wasn't that bad to be honest and I've seen worse places in the UK. Obviously it looks a bit down trodden now compared to a few decades ago, but definitely not the worse place I've seen. Worth a visit for a couple of hours if you're passing by somewhere.

Why do people come to my town and ducking slag it down? Because they have nothing better to do. Rhyl is a lovely town and has major improvements going on so leave Rhyl alone or I’ll come slag your town down with pleasure

1 year late to the party but just seen this. I lived there and around there in the late 70s early 80s., the ugly building wasn't ugly back when it was a fantastic Woolworths, it was massive with 2 sales floors inc a cafe/restaurant and one of the best shops in town for variety of items. Now I have to test my memory and if I recall correctly pretty much the entire parade from where you started to Abbey st was arcades and no Premiere Inn just arcades. If I recall correctly the demolished bit was one massive arcade with premium machines in the front section such as Gogar and Hunted House pinballs and you walked down some steps to the back section and to the left was a row of old pinballs, in front of you were many pool tables and to the right space invader machines and there may also have been food (not sure on that) anyways I think the building did not have the Victorian fronts and this may be why that section is completely demolished and the other bit retained. The leaning tower has leaned since I can remember and around 1980ish for several years the building was used for a continuous model railway exhibition that was run by the same person as the nearby Marine Lake Railway, at the rear behind the tower was a public toilet block and as a young boy it amused me a sign in the mens saying 'please adjust your dress before leaving'. I haven't been to Rhyl for many years now but it doesn't really look like its former self. It also had a short lived monorail , floral Hall , half decent fair and the sun centre on the seafront...All long gone.

As a frequent visitor to Rhyl and a holiday home owner nearby, I suggest you do a dad run over to the actual prom and walk along and view the money that has been spent to improve and make a pleasant walk along next to the sea. There is a cycle path right along and a wide prom for walkers and runners including many catering facilities and toilets and disabled beach access. At one end there is a new retail park with free parking. There is a childrens playground, a new swimming pool/activity centre and a travelodge have been to attract more visitors. Even Blackpool has its dingy side streets, as does any seaside town. Also, suggest if you film on a weekend in the daytime you will get a true representation of the number of people who visit.

Demolishing that terrace at the beginning of the video is a start but they should not stop until the whole town is flattened, Rhyl is a complete and utter dive. Blackpool may have its problems but this place makes it look like Monte Carlo.

Rhyl is undergoing some major regeneration schemes. All the buildings that are fenced off on the front are being demolished and a new mix of commercial and residential properties will be there. The Town Hall clock tower was noticed by a photographer some years ago and was found to be in a precarious leaning position. This was all renovated and is now secure, yes you can still see a little lean but it's safe and adds to its charm. Rhyl is fast becoming a renewed lovely place but it takes time. Shame you missed off the Marina and our little lake with its own miniature steam train. The BT Exchange is a constant state of issue as supporters of Rhyl constantly have to tell BT to keep the building and its grounds in good condition. I remember Rhyl as a child and I really feel its better now and will be more modern in the near future. Rhyl is really not as grim as you make it, there are really more positives to it. Thank Debbie ☺

Where’s the adams family machine that would have it’s music playing? It was around the place where they were calling out bingo. You would have been able to hear it from there. Rhyls changed a lot from when was a kid in the 90s. A lot worse now. Where the high tower ride? It should have been where you were near the car park? Just not the same place now
