I was very lucky to move to Taiwan in 1973 to study Chinese and then work there for 10 years on and off until 1993 when I moved to Beijing. I went to Sun Moon lake in 1973. There was hardly any town then. This is a number 3 or 4th best tourist spot in Taiwan (Toroko Gorge is number 1, Ali Mountain, and Hualian to Ilan seashore road the other greats). Being a top tourist spot you will pay more for hotels than a big city with tons of AirBnB and hotels. Food of course is better than anywhere else, and I mean anywhere in the world. If it ain’t great, the business will soon close. No government welfare, just capitalism and survival so very strong free people.
Accommodation in Taiwanese towns. Local breakfast restaurants are the first choice. Freshly made hamburgers, sandwiches, milk tea or Chinese breakfast, steamed buns, and soy milk Convenience stores are always the last choice. was shy about ordering food because of the language. You will lose a lot of fun:)
Milk teaa from breakfast places has cassia seeds and creamer, which can make you run to the bathroom a lot. So, it's best to skip the black tea or milk tea when you're cycling around the island."

It's leopard cat (石虎), not clouded leopard (雲豹). Clouded leopards are extinct and leopard cats are currently an endangered species.
