The Sacred Harp is an early American shape-note hymn book originally published in 1844. This particular song, "HALLELUJAH' was an early frontier camp-meeting song, There was a historian who wrote a book on the camp meetings, and he titled his book "And They all Sang Hallelujah," based on this very song! The singers are all amateurs who will gather together periodically for an all-day singing.

Glad you're listening to Sacred Harp! I've been singing this music for 20+ years. It and the people involved are awesome.

I would love to see your reaction to sitting in the middle of a Sacred Harp singing...where those kids were! If you ever get the chance, you should. It is totally unlike any other musical experience.

I learned a bit about this type of singing when I watched the movie “Cold Mountain”. It’s very interesting and beautiful. It’s a great movie too 🌺✌️

I was very briefly associated with a Sacred Harp group. Fascinating way of singing harmony, and of learning music. It's shaped notes, and the people learn the names of the notes DO RE ME etc. and what shape they go with. They always sing through it once singing the note names first, then with the words in the book. (Re-listen to the first run-through if you missed that!) And the music has a sound like nothing else.

The 146 is the page number in the hymnal, which in this case is The Sacred Harp. So glad to hear your reaction to this truly unique singing style. ❤❤❤

Sitting in the room for the real thing is much more exciting than listening to a recording!

Shape note singing was invented as a way for groups of people to learn to sing easily and without the need for instruments that might not be available in remote communities. That's why they note out the song before singing the words and why they all mark time with their hands (not just the song leaders). Song leaders rotate and it's sung in a square facing inward.... you are singing for each other, not performing for an audience.
There are still regular singings around the US South as well as big yearly events.
